v SEPARABLE FASTENER Filed Nov. 5. 1937 Lef I ATTORNEY Patented Sept. 5, 1939 UNiTEo STATES -PATET OFFICE SEPARABLE FASTENER Applicationl November 5, 1937, serial No. 172,905 2 claims.k (c1. 242o5 'I'his invention relates to separable fasteners and particularly to the construction of the end portions thereof for the purpose of reinforcing the mounting of the fasteners in connection with their respective supports; and' particularly in fasteners of the detachable type wherein the stringers are completely separated; and the object of the invention is to provide a means for reinforcing -the ends of the stringers of separable fasteners of the type deiined, in such manner as to permit a continued uninterrupted stitching operation directly through the ends of the stringer tapes without` danger of any injury to the needle of a stitching machine and in eliminating delay in complicated stitching operations customarily employed' or the necessity of securing said tape ends by eyelets to the; supports as is the usual custom; a still further object being to provide a reinforcing end structure for Stringer tapes` of separable fasteners employing metallic coupling plates having elongated apertures therein through which a reinforcing tape is threaded and then folded upon the upper and lower surfaces of the tape beyond said plates in providing the required reinforcement to the tape and in stitching or otherwise securing said' reinforcing fabric strips in position; and with these and other objects in view, the invention consists in a device of the class and for the purpose specified, which is simple in construction, eflcient in use, and' which is constructed as hereinafter described and claimed.

The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying draw- 5 ing forms a part, in which the separate partsof my improvement are designated by suitable reference characters in each of the views, and' in. which: f

In the drawing, I have shown at 5 and 6, the i Stringer tapes of a separable fastener, said tapes including beaded edge portions 1 and 8 upon which the coupling links or scoops 9 and I0 are arranged'. At II, I have indicated. a slider movable along the stringers to couple and uncouple the links 9 and II) in the usual manner. I2 illustrates a finger piece or pull coupled with the slider to facilitate operation thereof. 'I'he present invention relates primarily to separable fasteners of the detachable type; that is to say Where both stringers 5 and 6 are completely separate. This type of fastener device is adapted for use on wind-breakers and similar garments; or wherever it is desired to completely separate two supporting parts to which the stringers are attached. 5

To accomplish this result, the stringer 6 has a coupling block I3 fixed thereto and including a projecting bar portion M1v arranged upon the beaded edge 8; whereas the stringer '5 has a pin or bar part I5 insertableinto and out of the 10 block I3 through the slider II in coupling and uncouplinggthe tapes 5 and 6 in manners well known in this art. Secured to th beaded edge portions of the tapes 5 and 6, where the parts I5 and I3-I4 are at- 15 tached thereto, `are coupling plates I 6 I1 which are simply folded around the tape, and the top and bottomwalls are secured together by an inturned flange I 8 at one end thereof and by a prong I9 at the other end thereof which passes through 20 the tapes.

The. plates I6I7 are also provided with elongated apertures 20 which are disposed' in common alinement when said plates are attached to the tapes 5 and 6 and when'attached thetapes 25 are cut out tofornux openings 2I registering with the apertures 2.0 as maybe clearly seen upon a consideration of Fig. 2 of the drawing.

I -also employ reinforcing tapes 22-23 for each of the stringers 5 and 6; and these tapes 30 are in the form of straps of fibrous material preferably of a strong fabric and are threaded or looped through the openings 2li-2|, and the extended sid'e portions 22a, 23a thereof are arranged upon the upper and lower surfaces of the Stringer tapes 5 and 6 and are cemented or otherwise secured thereto, the same being stitched in position by stitchings 24 as seen in Fig. 1 of the drawing.

The reinforcing tapes 22-23 in conjunction with the plates I6-I'I will form a strong and 4o durable reinforcement for the ends of the stringers 5 and 6; and by providing the tapes or straps 22-23, the operation of stitching the tapes to their respective supports is facilitated in that the stitchings `are free to pass through the tapes 22-23 without danger of destruction to the needle of the stitching machine. Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:

1. In separable fastener stringers of the class described, a stringer tape having coupling links attached longitudinally of one edge portion thereof, said tape having coupling end portions extending beyond end links, a reinforcing means at one coupling end portion of said ta'pe spaced from said links, said reinforcing means comprising a U-shaped member arranged on said edge of the tape and having side plates extending onto opposite sides of said tape and secured thereto, said side plates having registering apertures therein registering with a corresponding opening in said' tape to provide a passage through the tape and said plates, a. fabric strap arranged in said passage and having end portions disposed transversely on upper and lower surfaces of the tape and extending beyond the plates of said member, and

means for securing the strapend portions to said tape beyond said plates to provide a reinforced section .on the tape through which stitchings are adapted to pass in securing the tape to a support.

2. `In separable fasteners of the class described, a pair of stringer tapes having coupling links arranged longitudinally of one edge thereof adapted to be coupled and uncoupled by a slider, interengaging devices on one end of the tapes for detachably coupling the tapes at said end adjacent the end links of said stringers, reinforcing plates on that part of the tape to which said coupling devices are secured, said plates extending onto the tapes beyond said devices and having apertures extending Itherethrough and through said tapes, reinforcing straps arranged in said apertures and having ends extendingtransversely onto opposite surfaces of the tapes beyond said plates, and said strap ends providing reinforced sections on the Stringer tapes in stitching the same to predetermined supports.
