Description

Aug. 15, 1939 F. R. STEARNS LABEL MOUNTING FOR STAMPS OR PRINTING BLOCKS AND THE LIKE Filed July 15, 1938 INVENTOR. fimmali 6/20/776 ATTORNEYS Patented Aug. 15, 1939 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE LABEL MOUNTING FOR STAIHPS OR PRINT ING BLOCKS AND THE LIKE Application July 15, 1938, Serial No. 219,371
1 Claim.
This invention relates to improvements in label mountings for stamps or printing blocksand the like.
The main objects of this invention are to provide an improved label mounting for printing blocks or stamps and the like in which the parts are retained in assembled relation without the aid of glue or adhesive.
A further object is to provide a label mounting in which the label is eifectively clamped by the retaining means so that it is not likely to slip out of place in the handling of the stamp or printing block or other part on which the label is mounted.
A still further object is to provide a structure which can be delivered to the user with the label retainer on the block or support and the label easily inserted and the retainer pressed down into clamping position with the label.
Objects relating to details and economies of the invention will appear from the description to follow. The invention is defined and pointed out in the claim.
A preferred embodiment of the invention is 25 illustrated in the accompanying drawing,v in
which:
Fig. 1 is a perspective View of a printing block or stamp embodying the features of my invention.
Fig. 2 is an enlarged fragmentary transverse section.
Fig, 3 is a fragmentary perspective view illustrating one of the steps in the assembling of a label with the block and its retaining element.
Fig. 4 is a fragmentary perspective view illustrating a succeeding step in the assembling of a label.
Fig. 5 is a perspective View of the combined label cover and retainer.
Fig. 6 is a perspective view of a label designed to be used with the retainer and block.
In the embodiment of my invention illustrated, the supporting block I is of the hand stamp type and a type being conventionally illustrated at 2. This block has an inclined face 3 having inwardly converging slots 4 therein of substantial depth, these slots being in the form of saw kerfs.
The label cover and retainer 5 is of channel cross section and comprises the web portion 6 of a width corresponding to the width of the face of the supporting block between its kerfs and converging flanges l of a substantial width and normally disposed at an angle to each other varying substantially from the angle of the slots relative to each other. The result is that when the flanges of the retainer are forced into the slots they are placed under clamping and frictional stress with the walls of the slots and the web portion is bowed inwardly slightly as shown in Figs. Band 4 so that it is effectively clamped and it is in retaining engagement with the label 8.
In sending these out to the customerthat is, preparatory to receiving the label which of course bears the appropriate legend, a filler strip 9 is inserted under the retainer so that the user may pull out this filler strip, leaving a space III in which the label 8 may be readily inserted and the retainer then pressed down onto the label as shown in Figs. 1 and 2.
The distorting of the flanges to enter the slots also distorts the Web portion of the retainer with a result that there is an efiective resilient clamping action upon the label, and the retainer is at the same time very effectively retained in the mounted position.
By inserting the filler strip 9 prior to sending out to the customer, it is not necessary for the customer to remove the combined label cover and retainer from its support, but the filler strip may be pulled out, the label inserted, and the retainer pressed down to seated position as shown in Fig. 2.
I have illustrated and described my improvements as embodied in a hand stamp or printing block but it will be understood that they are capable of embodiment in various relations.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
In a label mounting, the combination of a supporting block provided with a face having inwardly converging substantially spaced kerflike slots therein, a label of a width approximately that of the spacing of said slots, and a label cover and retainer of transparent resilient material of channel cross section and having inwardly converging relatively wide flanges engaged in said slots, the angle of the flanges relative to each other normally being substantially more convergent than the angle of the slots relative to each other so that when the flanges of the retainer are inserted in the slots of the supporting block the flanges of the retainer are deflected from their normal position and placed under clamping frictional stress with walls of the slots and the web portion of the retainer is bowed inwardly into clamping stress with the label arranged upon the face of the holder between the slots.
