When the device is used to wind coils, the slidable tool carrying support 14 is provided with a wire guide supporting arm 35 having wire guiding rollers 36 at its outer end. The member 35 is shown as adjustably secured upon a post 31 of the tool supporting carriage I4 by a thumb screw 38.
In addition to the above features, the drawings also show the support I!) as having a spindle 39 upon which a spool of Wire 40 is adapted to be secured, and positioned between the spool of wire 40 and the wire guiding rollers 36 there is a wire tensioning means 4| which is to be described in more detail hereinafter. With this arrangement, as shown in Figure l of the drawings, a wire, designated by the numeral 42, is taken from the spool 40 passed under a rotatable guide roller 43 of the tensioning means 4i, and under and over the wire guiding rollers 36 upon the supporting arm 35 and finally wound upon the coil receiving form IS with a spacing which will be determined by the disposition of the diagonally disposed member 21. At this point it may be pointed out that in the device illustrated, the lead screw has a pitch of sixteen threads to the inch and it is driven through the beveled gears 2! at a l to 1 ratio with respect to the crank 22, and the gears 23 and 24, which serve to drive the chuck l I, have a ratio of l to 4. As a result, when the diagonally disposed member 2'! which controls the movements of the slidable tool carrying support I4 is disposed at an angle of degrees, the pitch of the winding upon the coil form [4 will be 4 turns to the inch throughout its length.
Upon referring to Figure 3 of the drawings, it will be noted that the coil receiving form I5 is open at one end and that the chuck H has a central opening 44 over which the open end of the coil form [5 is adapted to be disposed. This opening in the chuck ll permits an operator to pull the end of the wire 42 through a hole made in the coil form and connect it with one or the other of the plug contacts 16 at the outer end of the coil form l5 without removing the coil form from the chuck l I. After the desired number of turns at the particular spacing have been placed upon the coil form IS, the operator will then make another hole in the coil form i5 and pull the remaining end of that particular coil section through said hole and connect it to the proper terminal l6. Should the coil form be one of the type having two windings of different spacings, the operator can now, by making a further hole in the coil form [5, start and complete a second winding upon the coil form with any different desired spacing of the windings by merely adjusting the angle of the member 21 and proceeding as before.
Reference is now made to Figures 4 and 5 of the drawings, for a description of the wire tensioning means hereinbefore referred to. As shown in these figures of the drawings, the spindle 39 upon which the spool of wire 40 is adapted to be mounted has a drum 45 with which a pair of clamping brake shoes 46 cooperate. The brake shoes 46 are adjustable into braking relation with the drum 45 by means of a spring 41 and an adjustable thumb screw 48. Arranged between the spindle 39 and the coil form supporting chuck II, the support l0 carries a pivotally mounted shaft 49 having a crank arm 50 upon the end of which there is a transversely extending stub shaft 5| that carries the slidable and rotatable wire engaging guide 43. At the outer end of the shaft 49 there is a transversely extending head 52 that is disposed between opposed levers 53 and 54 which are biased toward each other by a spring 55 and a clamping rod 56 upon the outer end of which, for the purpose of varying the compression of the Spring 55, there is a thumb nut 51. With this arrangement it will be seen that as the rotatable shaft 49 is rocked one way or the other, the transversely extending head 52 thereupon will engage the oppositely disposed clamping members 53 and 54 and thus tend to prevent too great a displacement of the wire engaging guide roller 43 as the wire 42 is drawn therealong during a winding operation. With this arrangement it will be seen that the wire 42 may be taken from the top of the spool 40,
as shown in Figure 5 of the drawings, and passed I under the wire engaging guide roller 43, or it may be taken oil the bottom of the spool 40 and passed over the wire engaging guide roller 43 upon the tensioning means 4!.
Reference is now made to Figure 6 of the draw- I ings, wherein the slidable tool supporting carriage I4 is shown as having a cutting tool mounted thereupon. In this arrangement the tool supporting carriage is shown as having a vertically extending post 58 disposed at the other side of the coil form l5 in which a bar 59 is slidably secured by a thumb screw 60, and at the outer end of the bar 59 there is a cutting tool 6! that is adapted to be adjusted into groove cutting relation with the coil form l5 when the latter is rotated with the chuck II. In the event that the device is equipped with a cutting tool, as shown in this figure of the drawings, by properly adjusting the angle of the diagonally disposed member 21, it will be possible to provide for any desired feed of the cutting tool 61 with respect to work carried by the chuck H, and thus cut grooves upon the work for the reception of the turns of a coil or for any other purpose.
While I have, for the sake of clearness and in order to disclose the invention so that the same can be readily understood, described and illustrated specific devices and arrangements, I desire to have it understood that this invention is not limited to the specific means disclosed, but may be embodied in other ways that will suggest themselves to persons skilled in the art. It is believed that this invention is new and it is desired to claim it so that all such changes as come within the scope of the appended claims are to be considered as part of this invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is- 1. In a device of the character described, the combination of a rotatable work supporting member, a tool support adjacent said member, a slidable carriage for said tool support movable in a line parallel with the axis of said rotatable work supporting member and having a slot engaging extension, a carriage driving member having an angularly disposed slot into which said slot engaging member is slidably disposed, said carriage driving member being movable in a path tangent tothe axis of said work supporting member, and means for rotating said work supporting member and simultaneously moving said carriage driving member with respect to said tool supporting carriage, whereby said slidable carriage will move parallel to the axis of said rotatable work supporting member at a relative speed as determined by the angular disposition of the slot on said carriage driving member.
2. In a device of the character described, the combination of a rotatable work supporting member, a tool support adjacent said member, a carriage for said tool support slidably mounted to move in a line parallel with the axis of said rotatable work supporting member and having a slot engaging extension, a driving means for said carriage, said driving means comprising a slidable member having an angularly disposed slot into which said extension is extended, said slidable member and its angular slot being movable in a path tangent to the axis of said work supporting member, a lead screw extending outwardly from said work supporting member and connected in threaded engagement with the slidable member of said driving means, and means for rotating said work supporting member and simultaneously turning said lead screw, whereby the tool supporting carriage will move parallel to the axis of said rotatable work supporting member at a relative speed as determined by the angular disposition of the slot in the slidable member of said driving means.

In a device of the character described, the combination of a support, a rotatable work holding means mounted upon said support, a tool support adapted to move parallel to the axis of said rotatable work holding means, a carriage movable in a line parallel with the axis of said rotatable work holding means upon which said tool support is mounted, a second carriage mounted upon said support adapted to move in a straight line transverse to the direction of travel of said first carriage, an angularly adjustable member upon said second carriage having a slidable driving connection with the carriage upon which said tool support is mounted, a lead screw extending at a right angle to the axis of said work holding means, a threaded means carried by said second carriage engaging said lead screw, and means for driving said rotatable work holding means and simultaneously turning said lead screw, whereby said first carriage will move parallel to the work upon said rotatable work holding means as the work is rotated and said second carriage moves at a right angle with respect thereto in response to a turning of said lead screw.

In a device of the character described, the combination of a foundation forming support, a horizontally disposed rotatable work holding means upon said support, a slidable tool carrying support mounted below said rotatable work holding means and movable parallel to the axis thereof, a slidable member mounted upon said foundation forming support movable in a line at a right angle to the direction of movement of said slidable tool carrying support, means for rotating said rotatable work holding means, a lead screw extending at a right angle to the axis of said work holding means and connected in threaded driving relation with said slidable member, a slot engaging projection upon said slidable tool carrying support, an angularly adjustable arm upon said slidable member having a straight slot formed thereupon and engaging the slot engaging projection upon said slidable tool carrying support and adapted to move in a path at a right angle to the line of movement of said slidable tool carrying support in response to a turning of said lead screw, whereby said slidable tool carrying support will move axially relative to the work at a rate of movement dependent upon the angular disposition of the adjustable arm upon said slidable member.
5. In a device of the character described, the
combination of a main support, a tool carrying support, a pair of spaced parallel guides between which said tool carrying support is slidably mounted, a second slidable member mounted upon said main support movable in a line at a right angle to the direction of movement of said slidable tool carrying support, a lead screw extending at a right angle to the direction of movement of said slidable tool carrying support and connected in threaded driving relation with said second slidable member, a slot engaging projection. upon said slidable tool carrying support, an arm upon said second slidable member having a slot formed thereupon disposed at an angle to the direction of movement of said slidable tool carrying support and said second slidable member and receiving the slot engaging projection upon said slidable tool carrying support, whereby said slidable tool carrying support will move between said spaced parallel guides at a rate of movement dependent upon the angular disposition of the arm upon said slidable member.
6. In a coil winding device of the character described, the combination of a support, a horizontally disposed rotatable coil form holchng means upon said support, a wire guiding means mounted adjacent said coil form holding means and movable parallel to the axis thereof, a slidable member mounted upon said support movable in a line at a right angle to the direction of movement of said wire guiding means, means for rotating said coil form holding means, a lead screw extending outwardly from said coil form holding means and connected in threaded driving relation with said slidable member, a slot engaging projection carried by said wire guiding means, an angularly adjustable arm upon said slidable member having a slot formed thereupon. into which the slot engaging projection upon said wire guiding means extends adapted to move in a path at a right angle to the line of movement of said wire guiding means in response to a turning of said lead screw, whereby said wire guiding means will move axially relative to a coil form upon said holding means at a rate of movement dependent upon the angular adjustment of the arm upon said slidable member.
