The object of the invention is to provide mechanism of simple and emcient construction and operation whereby the stitching of boolr. matches having a substantially wide edgewise-braced friction bearing surface at the end of the folded portion of the cover, is rapidly accomplished, a type of which book matches is disclosed in United fltates Patent No. 2,llll,lll, dated December 'l, l'dd'l.
With this object in view my invention comprises novel features of construction and combinations of parts which in a preferred embodiment of the invention will be hereinafter described; the scope of the invention being expressed in the appended claims.

Referring to the drawings, llli designates a portion of the longitudinal carrier-guiding trough of a match boolring machine in the region of two spaced wire stitchers ii, which trough is supported at each stitcher by a forwardly projecting braclset if that is bolted to the pedestal it of the stitcher. l t designates a portion of the lntermittently movable carrier which is guided in and along the trough, and it designates the main cam shaft which through suitable gearing operates the carrier, the stitchers and other moving elements of the machine in timed relation.
While in the present illustration two stitchers ill are arranged in spaced relation in order to effect the simultaneous stitching of two similarly spaced match boolr assemblies on stitcher or any suitable number of independent stitchers may be employed, if desired. The drive shafts it of the respective stitchers are connected by sprocket gearing ill, and one of such shafts is connected by similar gearing it with the transverse drive shaft it of the booking machine. llhe shaft it is connected with the shaft it by bevel gears ft.
Each of the stitchers is or may be of any usual or approved construction, the type illustrated including a vertically reciprocating guide case if for the independently reciprocating staple driver ff; a vertically reciprocable and swinging presser foot ft rearwardly of and adjacent the staple driver and its casing, and a clincher-block f t which is conveniently supported on the forward wall of the trough presents the usual wire clinching recess iii in vertical alignment with the driver.
The carrier constitutes a means for advancing a succession of boolr match assemblies in spaced relation. in the form illustrated this carrier comprises an endless chain of pocketed linlrs each comprising a base it with parallel side walls if having inwardly overhanging flanges lit and having also suitably-disposed ears ft by means of which the adjoining linlrs are hingedly connected by pins. Within each linlr 1s a spring clamping leaf it which is upwardly and forwardly inclined as shown to present a smooth bearing surface for an end folded ideirible cover if) and associated match cards ltd, which cover and cards are assern bled in the carrier preparatory to their progression to the stitchers.
The portion of the cover which is inserted in. and through each linlr of the carrier preparatory to the entry of the match cards therein (as described in Fatent l lo. lhthxl'lh) is. bent and iii the carrier, one
folded to provide a substantially broad end portion E for the friction or match ignition material (as in-Patent No. 2,101,111), which portion rests upon the opposing side wall of the trough l and is advanced by the carrier to a position below and slightly rearward of the path of the staple driver 22 of one or the other of stitchers, as seen in Fig. 3. As each of the match book assemblies is being thus positioned, the rearwardly extending cover portion 0 passes to and upon a plate member 3| constituting a pusher which is reciprocated to and from the carrier in a path in alignment with the heads of the matches. A pair of longitudinally spaced metallic strips 32 are affixed to a block 33 which is supported at the rear of the trough by the adjacent bracket l2. These strips afford an efficient guide to receive and support the extending cover portion 0 in its passage to and upon the pusher 3|. The free ends of the strips are oppositely deflected, as at 34, to provide a flaring mouth portion to receive and guide the progressing cover extension.
The pusher 3| is carried by a slide 35 mounted in guideways in the block 33. Overhanging the pusher is a guard plate 36 beneath which the cover extension passes, which plate is secured at its rearward end to the pusher, and which plate is downwardly and inwardly bevelled, as at 38, along its receiving edge in order to facilitate the movement thereunder of the cover extension. The top of the pusher 3|, rearwardly of the path of the free end of the cover extension, is transversely recessed, as at 39, for the reception of the head 40 of a T-shaped member, whereof the shank 4| is slidably fitted in a guide opening in the rear of the pusher. The outer end of the shank has an upstanding lug 42 which is connected by means of a retracting spring 43 with a pin 44 on the plate 36, which spring thus tends to draw the shank and its head 40 yieldingly forward toward the opposing end of the book cover.
During each interval of rest of the intermittently moving carrier the slide 35 is reciprocated toward and from the carrier in such manner that the forward end of the pusher 3| and the head 40 of the spring tension member simultaneously impinge against the opposing match heads and the extended end of the cover, respectively, thus moving the folded end of the cover and the encased bases of its contained match cards across the clincher-block 24 and against a permanent stop which is constituted by one of the members of a clamping and shaping element hereinafter described. The resilient action of the tension member directly on the opposing end of the cover ensures the accurate positioning of the forward expanded end of the cover against the stop, instead of depending for this result upon the action of the pusher 3| against the heads of the matches, as in the latter case irregularities in the match heads or in the cards would or might tend to deform the expanded end (E) of the cover.
The means illustrated for reciprocating the slide 35 comprises an upstanding lever 45 which is pivoted, as at 46, on the body of the bracket l2 and is pivotally connected at its upper end by means of a link 41 to a depending lug 48 on the slide. The lever 45 is connected by means of a link 49 with a depending arm 50 of a bellcrank loose on the forward shaft of the booking machine. To the other arm 52 of the bellcrank is pivoted the upper end of a depending actuating rod 53, the lower end of which has a 75 bifurcated portion 54 which slidabigv embr c s as by screws 31,
a wrist block 55 loose on the shaft ll of the machine and is provided with a lateral roll 56 operatively fitted in the race of a face cam 51 fast on such shaft. The contour-of the cam race is such as to reciprocate the rod 53 at a determined interval during the rotation of the cam 51 and thereby actuate the slide through the lever and link connections just described.
The clamping and shaping element hereinbefore referred to comprises relatively movable complementary members constructed and arranged in such co-operative relation to the stitcher as to clamp and shape the folded end of the cover and match assembly immediately before and during the action thereon of the descending presser foot and staple driver of the stitcher, whereby the parts of the cover adjacent the relatively wide end portion E are caused to diverge uniformly from the butt portions of the contained match cards to the respective longitudinal edges of such end portion, thus affording eflicient brace members for the edegs when the binding operation has been effected, as seen in Fig. 4.
In the present instance the clamping and shaping element for the folded end of the match book assembly includes stationary and movable Jaw members. The stationary jaw member comprises a recessed block 56 which embraces the clincherblock 24 and is secured to the forward side of the trough, as by a screw 580, the upper forward edge of the block 58 being downwardly and outwardly bevelled, as at 59, similarly to the incline or angle to be imparted to the short fold of the cover. The length of the block 58 substantially corresponds with the width of a match book. Secured to the outer face of the block 58, at its respective ends, are vertical gibs 60 between which is slidably fitted a vertically reciprocative head 6| having a pair of spaced upstanding projections 62 terminating in inwardly overhanging portions 63 constituting movable jaw members having their lower surfaces oppositely inclined in co-operative relation to the bevelled surface 59 of the fixed jaw in accordance with the incline or angle to be imparted to the upper side of the book cover adjacent its expanded end. The head 6| is in its raised position during each interval of rest of the carrier, as seen in Fig. 3, and hence when a match assembly in the carrier is moved forward by the pusher 3| and spring tension member 46,
as previously explained, the opposing face of the head 6| serves as a determinate stop for the assembly. Thereupon the head 6| is lowered, and as a result the upper and lower areas of the end portion of the assembly are clamped and shaped by the oppositely inclined jaw-like members before the descending presser foot 23 and staple driver 22 of the stitcher perform their respective functions of pressing and binding the assembly, as seen in Fig. 4. When the stitching has been completed the head 6| and also the stitcher elements are raised, and the carrier is actuated to advance a succeeding book assembly to proper position for the shaping and binding operations thereon.
The means illustrated for reciprocating the head 6| of the clamping and shaping element which is associated with each of the stitchers includes a gear rack 64 fixed on the outer face of such head. The teeth of this rack are in mesh with those of a pinion 65 fast on a forward shaft 66 which extends longitudinally of the carrier and has its bearings in brackets 61 projecting outwardly from the forward wall of the trough Ill. East on the rock shaft 66 is an outwardly extending arm 68 which is pivotally connected by means of a link 69 with a lever 10 pivoted on a bracket 1| on the base 12 of one of the stitchers. I'his lever H1 has a lateral roll I3 which rides on the periphery of a suitable cam 14 fast on the shaft l5, and is held in contact with the cam by means of a suitably-disposed spring 15 which is connected to the lever Ill and a stationary part of the structure. The contour of the cam 14 is such as to effect in conjunction with the spring 15 the oscillation of the lever 10 and consequently corresponding vertical reciprocation of the link 69 at .a determined interval during the rotation of the cam, thereby actuating the head Bl through the rock shaft 66, pinion 65 and rack 64.
It is to be understood that the invention is not limited to the particular exemplifying form thereof herein disclosed, as the mechanisms may be modified within the principles of the inventionand the scope of the appended claims.

In a match booking machine having means for successively advancing book assemblies, each consisting of matches and a flexible cover therefor having a fold embracing the matches, and a stitcher including a presser foot and staple driver for binding the folded end of the assembly, relatively movable jaws for clamping and shaping the folded end of the assembly preparatory to the binding operation, and means for actuating said jaws in timed relation to the presser foot and staple driver of the stitcher.
2. In a match booking machine having means for successively advancing book assemblies, and having means for binding each assembly, such assembly consisting of matches and a flexible cover therefor having one of its ends bent and folded to provide a substantially wide rectangular end portion spaced from the line of binding, relatively movable jaws constructed and arranged to clamp and converge the cover areas between the longitudinal edges of the said end portion and the line of binding, means for opening and closing said jaws in timed relation to the travel of the assembly, and means for shifting the assembly endwise to position the cover with its folded end portion between the open jaws preparatory to the clamping and binding operations.

In a match booking machine having means for successively advancing book assemblies, and having also means for binding each assembly adjacent one end thereof, such assembly consisting of matches and a flexible cover therefor having one of its ends bent and folded to provide a substantially wide rectangular end portion spaced from the line of binding, complementary fixed and movable members having oppositely bevelled jaws arranged and adapted to clamp and converge the areas of the cover between the longitudinal edges of the rectangular end portion and the line of binding, means for vertically reciprocating the movable clamp member to open and close the jaws in timed relation to the advancement of the assembly, and means for endwise shifting the assembly to position the cover with its folded endportion between the open jaws pli'eparatory to the clamping and binding operaons.

In a match booking machine having a conveyer for advancing a succession of book assemblies, and having a wire stitcher including a presser foot, staple driver and clincher-block, all in co-operative relation to bind each assembly adjacent one end thereof, such assembly consisting of matches and a flexible cover therefor having one of its ends bent and folded to provide a substantially wide rectangular end portion spaced from the line of binding, complementary jaw members laterally adjacent the clincher-block, one of said members being stationary and the other vertically movable in relation thereto, said members constructed and arranged to clamp and converge the cover areas between the longitudinal edges of the end portion and the line of binding, means for opening and closing said jawsin timed relation to the travel of the assembly, and means for endwise shifting the assembly to position the cover with its folded end portion between the open jaws preparatory to the clamping and binding operations.
5. A match booking machine including a wire stitcher having a presser foot, a staple driver and a clincher-block, all in co-operative relation to bind a match book assembly consisting of matches and a flexible cover therefor, said cover having one of its ends bent and folded to provide a substantially wide rectangular end portion spaced from the line of binding, relatively movable complementary jaws for clamping and converging the cover portions between the longitudinal edges of the end portion and the line of binding, means for periodically opening and closing said jaws, and means for positioning the assembly with the folded end portion of the cover between the open jaws preparatory to the clamping and binding operations.
6. In a match booking machine having means for successively advancing book assemblies, and means for binding the folded ends of the assemblies, each assembly comprising matches and a cover therefor having at one end a fold embracing the base of the matches and at the other end a portion extending beyond the heads of the matches, pusher means for positively acting against the match heads of each assembly presented to said pusher means, and for resiliently acting against the opposed end extension of the cover of said assembly, and means for supporting and actuating said pusher means.

In a match booking machine having means for successively advancing book assemblies, each assembly comprising matches and a cover therefor having at one end a fold embracing the base of the matches and at the other end a portion extending beyond the heads of the matches, and means for binding said assemblies, a slide, a pusher plate thereon for positively acting against the match heads of each assembly presented to said pusher means, and a spring tension member mounted .on said pusher and arranged to act against the opposed end extension of the cover of said assembly.
8. In a match booking machine having means for successively advancing book assemblies, each assembly comprising matches and a cover therefor having at one end a fold embracing the base of the matches and at the other end a portion extending beyond the heads of the matches, a
stitcher including a presser foot and a staple driver for binding the folded ends of the assembly, relatively movable jaws for clamping and shaping the folded end of the assembly preparatory to the binding operation, a reciprocating element for moving the assembly between the open jaws, and means for operating said jaws and reciprocating element in timed relation to the presser foot and staple driver.
