tion of the tucker devices is ensured while the machine is running at high speed. 15 Another object is to provide simple and efficient means whereby the open books are uni-- formly positioned and held in the tucking or fastening zone, and whereby the completed 'books are positively discharged coincidentally with the advancement'of succeeding book elements to the tucking or fastening zone.
With these objects'in view my invention comprises novel features of construction and combinations of parts which-in a preferred' form will be hereinafter described, and the scope of the invention then expressed in the ppended claims.

l4 designates an intermittently rotatable wheel 5 which is mounted on the frame adjacent the path of the book holders, and which wheel' has in and around its periphery equally spaced pairs of pockets l5 into each succeeding pair of which, in a dwell of the wheel, the ejected books are in- 10 serted by the plunger H with the closure flaps of thebooks extending outwardly from the wheel.

The cover flaps of each succeeding pair of books in their intermittent travel to the extensions are angularly 20 flexed and then, while the wheel isat rest, the books are endwise ejected from the pockets of the wheel and upon the bed 18 by'novel mechanism hereinafter described. 'This mechanism advancesthe books beneath'the extensions I! in a manner to effect the folding of the respective flaps fiatwise upon the contained matches, the extensions yieldingly pressing upon and holding down the folded flaps. The books are discharged in pairs from the, wheel 14 in similar endwise and face arrangement, the larger or headed ends of the matches leading and the fold flaps of the covers being upward.
A reciprocative tucker arm l9 overhangs' the wheeljwhich arm has a downwardly extending bifurcated portion 20 terminating in friction heads 2| in proximity to the flaps of the match books which are imposed on'the bed. The heads 21, by actuation of the tucker arm, are effective to insert thefree ends-of the cover flaps (a) vof 40 each succeeding pair of books (B) under the retaining folds (c) of the covers at thenarrow ends of the respective books. The forward end of the tucker arm is pivoted to theupstanding arm 22 of a lever which'is fulcrumed on a stud 220 on the supporting frame of the booking machine. The inclined depending arm 23 ofthe lever has a roll 24 which is fitted in the race of a face cam 25 fasten the main shaft I I of the machine,'the contour of the cam race being such that at a determined interval in each rotation of the cam the lever is oscillated to effect horizontal reciprocation of the tucker arm, as set forth inPatent No. 1,042,472 aforesaid.-
In the machine of the patent the vertical mo- 5 tion of the reciprocating tucker arm in. respect to the cover flaps is effected by means of a series of cross-rods equally spaced around the periphery of the intermittently rotatable flap folding wheel, each of which rods in the intermittent progress of the wheel co-acts with a cam projecting on the under side of the arm in a manner to raise the arm and thus hold it when. the wheel is at rest. Then in the succeeding initial movement of the wheel the rod escapes the stud and permits the descent of the arm by gravity. When the machine is run at highspeed the rapid recurrent action of the succeeding rods on the cam projection of the tucker arm produces an irregular chattering vibration of the arm, with consequent impairment of the tucking effect.
To overcome this objection the present invention provides improved means for effecting a smooth and uniform vertical movement of the reciprocating tucker arm, which means includes a lifter bar 2&5 having at its upper end a roll 27 upon which a suitably disposed insert 23 in the arm iii is normally held by means of a spring connection 29 between the bar and arm. The arm is provided on its under side with a depending guide block 30 which is loosely fitted in a circumferential groove 3! in the flap folding wheel.- The bar 26 has a bifurcated foot 32 that straddles a shaft 33 having its bearings in a suitably disposed bracket 34 on the frame structure iii, and in an upstanding bracket 340 on the base 35 of the structure. The shaft 33 is driven from the main shaft H by sprocket and chain connections, as 36. equipped with a lateral roll 37 which is operatively fitted in the continuous race of a face cam 38 fast on the shaft 33, the: contour of the cam being such that the lifter is uniformly raised and lowered at determined intervals to effect the rising and permit the falling motion of the arm it relatively tothe cover flaps of the match books supported onthe bed 18. e
In the embodiment of my invention herein illustrated the wheel I4 is in the form of a drum having two spaced annular grooves 39 of substantial depth which medially intersect the pockets l5, and having also the intermediate groove 3! hereinbefore referred to adapted to receive and guide the vertically movable lifter bar 26 as well as the block 30 on the tucker arm [9. The bed. I8. is provided with spaced slots 40 in line with the respective grooves 39, the floors of the channels of the bed being coplanar, or substantially so, with the floors of the respective wheel pockets that are located adjacent the bed when the wheel is at rest. Mounted to swing in a path intersecting the bed-slots 40 and the respective wheel slots 39, adjacent thereto, are the upper portions of the respective arms 4| of the bifurcated upper end of a, vertical lever 42 whereof the lower end is pivotally connected by means of a link .43 to a bracket 44 on the base of the main frame.
The upper end of each of the arms 4!, provides an ejector head 440 having front and rear upstanding fingers 45 and 46, respectively, which i The foot of the bar 26 is ward to clear the bottom of the completed book and swings forward and up to embrace the next succeeding match book located in the wheel pocket in proximity to the bed. This completes the cycle of motion of the lever, at which stage the finger 46 of the lever head is situated adja'cent the forward narrow end of the book which is positioned on the bed, as seen in Fig. 3. In the next rearward movement of the lever, while a book is being removed from the wheel and placed beneath the head, the completed book on the bed is directly and positively pushed rearward by the, finger 46 of the lever head and beyond the tucking zone without the intervention of a succeeding book.
The means herein illustrated for actuating the lever 42 in timed relation to the pocketed wheel and the tucking devices has follows:
The lower end of the lever 42 is provided with a roll 41 which runs in an open cam 48 formed in the face of a gear 49 loose on a stud 50 which is supported by the upstanding bracket 34!), such gear meshing with and being actuated by a gear 5! fast on the driven shaft 33 hereinbefor mentioned. The contour of the cam on the gear 49 is such that in each rotation thereof a determined rising and, falling motion is imparted to the lever 42. The lever is also equipped with a roll 52 which runs in a face cam 53 on the gear 5|, the contour of which cam is such that an oscillating movement is imparted to the lever during the rising and falling motion of the latter, the combined motions thus produced effecting the described vertical orbital or four-way motion of the lever.
In Figs.1 and 3' of the drawings, I have indicated' the receiving pocketed portion of a book stacker 54 in' close relation to the bed so that as the ejector head shifts each opposing pair of completed books from the path of the tucker devices, the head directly and positively pushes such books into the proximate pockets 55 of the stacker.
From the foregoing it will be seen that simple and eflicient mechanism is provided whereby thebooks as they are successively ejected from the pocketed wheel are accurately positioned in theeffective paths of the tucker heads and are there securely held while the flaps are being tucked.- Also that the completed books are positively moved from the tucking Zone and entered in the pockets of the stacker by the direct action of the book ejecting element instead .of by the action. of the succeeding books in their passage from the wheel to the tucking Zone.
It is to be understood. that my invention is not limited to the particular exemplifying form thereof herein disclosed, as the mechanism may be modified within the principle of the invention and the scopeof the appended claims.

The combination of means for supporting a match book having an open cover flap and a retaining portion for the free end of the flap, a flap tucking member overhanging said sup-' porting means and movable relatively to the cover flap, a pivoted'element carrying said member, means for reciprocating said element longitudinally of the cover flap, a vertically reciprocative lifter barv supporting said element, means for maintaining said element in contact with said lifter bar, and acam for positively raisingand lowering saidbar i-n timed relation to;itsilongitudinal,travel, whereby a smooth and uniform compound motion of the pivoted element and the tucking member is effected.
2. The combination of an intermittently-movable pocketed element for successively receiving match books and. advancing them to a path of discharge, each book having an open cover flap and a retaining portionfor the .free end of the flap, a book support adjacent said path of discharge, means including a flaptucking member which overhangs said support, means including an ejector head movable in a vertical orbital path'intersecti-ng the plane of the book support and the adjacentflpooket of said element, said ejector head constructed to embrace an overlying match book, and means for actuating said ejector head in timed relation to the pocketedelement and the flap tucking member.

The combination of. an intermittent1y movabl pocketed element for. successively receiving its underside, book: cover fastening means overhanging said support, and means foractuating said lever to move the head thereof andvits fingers in a vertical orbital path intersecting vthe plane of the book support and the adjacent nocketof saidelement.
