7 Claims. (01. 30-43) This invention relates to a motor driven cutting device of the rotary type adapted for use both for shaving and for hair clipping.
An object of the invention is to provide in a single, compact device a motor driven cutting mechanism which in one form is suitable for hair clipping and which may be readily converted into a shaving device.
Another object of the invention is to provide an improved cutter head which may be supported and driven otherwise than hereinafter described, but yet without departing from the spirit of the claimed invention. 7
Another feature of the invention relates to an improved manner of constructing cutting blades, thus making it possible to shave more rapidly with the device.
Still another feature of the invention relates to improved hair-admission openings in the device.
Various other objects, advantages and features of the invention will hereinafter appear.
Referring to the accompanying drawing, which illustrates what is at present deemed to be a preferred embodiment of the invention:
Fig. 1 is a side view of the complete device, some parts being shown in side elevation, but the greater portion of the view being sectioned on line l-l of Fig. 2.
Fig. 2 is a face view of the applicator portion of the device, in part section on line 2-2 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is an enlarged reproduction of the upper portion of Fig. 1.
Fig. 4 is a view similar to'Fig. 3 except that certain parts shown in the former view have been omitted in order to convert the device from a hair cutter to an implement for shaving or for clipping oiT short bristles.

Referring in detail to the drawing, within the larger end portion of a casing l0, preferably of a rather slender ovoid type, is housed an electric motor H the shaft l2 of which is connected with a driving shaft l3 by means of a coupler l4. Said casing is shown split longitudinally, the direction of the split being from front to rear as the device is viewed in Fig. 1, the two casing halves thus formed being secured to each other by any desirable well known means, preferred means 5 being described later.
The driving shaft l3 has fixed to its outer end an apertured or foraminated safety plate 20.
In order to drive the cutters 2| and 22 together in a cooperating relation to said plate 20 and in a reverse direction of rotation to the direction of rotation of said plate, a sleeve shaft 23 is provided, said shaft 23 having a working fit around the outer portion of the shaft l3. Two annular bevel gears 24 and 25 are provided which are respectively secured to the sleeve shaft 23 and to the driving shaft l3. These gears are spaced apart as shown in Fig. 1 and both are in mesh with a transmission bevel gear 26, the latter gear being rotatable upon a stub shaft 21 furnished with a mounting means 28 supporting it in the side portion of the casing Ill.
A bearing |3b is provided to keep the shaft l3 and gear in alinement.
The more tapered end of the casing l0 has 25 a diametrically reduced extension 29 which is externally screw threaded to have screwed on to it an expanded head 30 which, in turn, is externally threaded and has screwed on to it an annular guard plate 3| having an outwardly di- 30 rected portion 32 which is rebent to form an inwardly directed lip 33, the inner edge of said lip being in a slightly spaced relation to the safety plate 20.
Said plate or disk 20 is foraminated or fur- 35 nished with a multiplicity of hair admission slots or apertures 35 which are shown as being of somewhat elliptical shapes. The expanded head 30 has a spider-like part which has arms 36 between which the shaved off beard or clipped off 40 hairs may fall by passing through the holes 36h.
When the head 30 is screwed in place it serves as a partial means for securing together the two halves of the split casing ID, and this securing means is completed by a complementary head or cap 31 which is screwed onto the opposite end of the casing. The latter cap connecting with the current supply cord 38 and also carrying the switch 39.
In order to cause the safety .plate 20 to be positively rotated by the shaft l3, said shaft has a screw threaded bore tapped into its upper end and into said bore is screwed a screw 4|. The head of this screw is provided with a laterally directed lug a, and the portion of the plate 20 which is countersunk to receive the screw's head has at one side an angular recess 20:1: to receive said lug Ma and thereby cause said plate to be positively driven by said shaft. The screwthreaded relation of the screw to the shaft should of course be such as to cause the screw to tighten rather than loosen during operation.
The cutters 2| and 22 are caused to rotate together by means of the cutter 22 having a downwardly directed lug 42 which enters a recess 43 in the cutter 2|. A positive driving of the cutter 2| by the sleeve shaft I3 is secured by providing said cutter 2| with a downwardly directed lug 44 which cooperates with a recess 44a in the outer peripheral portion of the upper end of the sleeve shaft 23. The cutter arms 2| have raised outer end portions 2|e.
When it is desired to use the device for shaving the face guard plate 3| is removed, a ring 40 (see Fig. 4) preferably being put in its place to protect the threaded portion of the casing.
The screw 4| is diametrically enlarged at Me to cooperate with a bushing 4|d when the parts are assembled as shown in Fig. 6, said bushing having the same external diameter as said enlarged portion of the screw. The purpose of this construction is to make it possible to clamp safety plate 20 securely to the shaft l3 in order that they may rotate together while cutters 2| and 22 rotate in the opposite direction. This arrangement .also makes it possible to remove said bushing and the cutter 2| in order to operate only the remaining portion of the assembly.
In Fig. 9 fragments of the safety plate 20 are shown provided with modified forms of hair admission openings 35a and 35b, the opening 35a being diamond shaped and the opening 35b being triangular shaped.
As shown in detail in Fig. 8 a special spring means is provided to press the cutters 2| and 22, with a moderate force, towards the parts 20 and 33 in order to insure that efficient shearing cuts be made. For this purpose a wavy, C-shaped leaf spring 45 is seated within an annular recess 46 provided therefor in the upper end of the sleeve shaft 23. The wavy shape of said spring causes it to produce yielding pressure in the direction of the length of the sleeve shaft. The recess for this spring does not extend quite out to the periphery of the shaft l3, enough stock being left to provide for forming the notch 44a with which the lug 44 of the cutter 2| cooperates. Said lug occupies the space provided by the cut-away segment of the C-shaped spring 45.
The rotary cutters 2| and 22 are both shown as being of a stellate character and each having four cutter arms, the arms of the inner or lower cutter 2| being longer than the arms of the outer or upper cutter 22. These two cutters are assembled with the arms of one cutter in a vertical alinement with those of the other. As best shown in Fig. 3, the outer end portion of each of the arms of the lower cutter 2| is deflected or stepped upwardly at 2|s in order to bring the outer portion of its cutting edge 2|e into proper relation to the annular guard lip 33. The safety disk 20 has a downwardly directed peripheral lip 20b which is a safety feature.
When the guard plate 3| is removed together with the cutter 2| and the ring 40 is put in the place of said guard plate, the upper edge of said ring 40 closely underlies the peripheral portion of the safety plate 20 to form a guard in relation to the peripheral edge of the rotary safety plate. The head 30 has an external annular shoulder 'ing the device to the face.

Describing further details of construction, the
central portion of the head 30 is furnished with a frusto-conical bearing portion 5|] and surmounting this is a ball bearing assembly 5| arranged to take the thrust resulting from apply- Outward thrust is taken by the inner side or end of the part 50 in cooperation with a bearing collar 52 shown integral with the sleeve shaft 23. Said frustoconical portion 50 keeps the clipped off hair from getting into the casing l causing it, instead, to be directed downwardly and outwardly through the openings 36h of the spider 30 which aids in supporting the applicator portion of the device.
The adjacent part of the casing structure of the device may be said to be provided with a tapered end portion having through it an axial bearing passage to receive the shafts which rotate the cutters, and the bearing assembly being sup ported by the end of this tapered part.
I claim:
1. In a device of the kind described, a safety plate having through it a multiplicity of hair admission openings with internal cutting edges, a handle member whereby said plate is supportable in an operative position, an annular stationary guard plate surrounding said safety plate and supported by said handle member, said guard plate also having hair admission openings with internal cutting edges, said guard plate serving to increase the face-engaging area of the device, a rotary cutter means having a peripheral portion positioned to cooperate with the cutting edges of said guard plate and a central portion positioned to cooperate with the cutting edges of said safety plate, and means carried by said handle member simultaneously to rotate said safety plate and cutter means in opposite directions.
2. In device of the kind described, a casing, a safety disk having through it a multiplicity of hair admission openings with internal cutting edges, the outer face of said disk being adapted for application to the face or scalp of a person for cutting his beard or hair, a central shaft to which said disk is secured, means carried by said casing to rotate said shaft, a sleeve shaft having a working fit around said central shaft, a cutter secured to said sleeve shaft in a position to cooperate with the aforesaid cutting edge'of said disk, and gearing operatively related to both of said shafts, arranged to cause them to rotate in opposite directions, and an annular guard plate supported by said casing in an encircling relation to said safety disk, said guard plate having hair admission openings postioned to widen the hair cutting area and having internal cutting edges, the peripheral portion of the aforesaid cutter cooperating with said cutting edges of said guard plate.
3. The subject matter of claim 2 and, said guard plate being detachable and the portion of said cutter which cooperates therewith being detachable from the remainder of the cutter.
4. In a device of the kind described, a support having a handle portion whereby it is bodily movable, a rotatable shaft mounted upon said support, a safety disk secured to said shaft and having hair-admission openings furnished with internal cutting edges, an annular guard plate detachably supported by said support in an encircling relation to said safety disk, said guard plate having hair-admission openings positioned to extend the beard-cutting or hair-cutting area and having internal cutting edges, a cutter having a central portion positioned to cooperate with the cutting edges of said disk and a detachable outer portion mountable in a position to cooperate with the cutting edges of said guard plate, and means mounted upon said support to support and rotate said cutter and safety disk simultaneously in opposite directions.
5. In a device of the kind described, a manually manipulable support, hair and beard cutting means applicable to the scalp and face carried by said support, said means having a central portion for cutting beard and short hair and an outer portion for cutting hair from the scalp, and means carried by said support to operate said hair and beard cutting means, said means for cutting hair from the scalp beng detachable from the remainder of the cutting means to provide a device for beard cutting only.

In a device of the kind described, a support having a handle portion whereby it is bodily movable, a rotatable shaft mounted upon said support, a safety disk secured to said shaft and having hair-admission openings furnished with internal cutting edges, said safety disk having a downwardly directed peripheral lip, a cutter positioned -to cooperate with the cutting edges of said disk, means mounted upon said support to support and rotate said cutter, and a guard ring attachable to said support inan underlying adjacent relation to the periphery ofsaid disk, said guard ring having an annular lip which is upwardly directed when said ring is attached and which underlies said peripheral lip of said safety disk in an adjacent relation thereto.
7. In a device of the kind described, a support, a safety plate mounted thereon having through 'it hair-admission openings with internal cutting edges, a rotatable shaft mounted on said support, 'said shaft extending at substantially a right angle to said plate and having an end portion adjacent thereto, a cutter mounted in a concentric abutting relation to said shaft end, said cutter having cutting edges which cooperate with the aforesaid'cutting edges of said plate, means located axially of said shaft and cutter to fasten said cutter to said shaft, there being a C-shaped groove in said shaft end around said fastening means, a C-shaped leaf spring occupying said groove, said spring having bends which give it lateral resiliency and cause it to press said cutter toward said plate. and means occupying said space between the ends of said C-shaped groove to transmit rotary movement from said shaft to said cutter.
