Specfication of Letters Patent No. 21,677, dated October 5, 1858.

TO all Iwhom it may concern:

Be it known that I, EDMUND HooLE, of Mount Vernon, in the county of Westchester and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Baggage- Checks to be Used on Railroads and other Public Conveyances; and I do hereby declare that the following' is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the annexed drawings,making apart of this specification, in which- Figure l-is a perspective view of my improvement. Fig. 2-is an edge view of do. Fig. Ew-is a face view of do.

Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures.

This invention consists in stamping, engraving, or otherwise marking, both sides of the metal plate which forms the check, with the names of stations on the line of the route of the conveyance for which the checks are intended; and so attaching or arranging the strap of the plate or check relatively with it that, by properly adjusting the strap, either side of the plate or check may be made the face or obverse side as occasion may require and consequently one plate or check be made to answer the purpose of two ordinary checks.

To enable those skilled in the art to fully understand and construct my invention I will proceed to describe it.

A, represents a metal plate which may be of sheet brass or other metal and of any suitable dimensions. This plate has a strap B, of leather or other suitable material attached to one end of it, the strap being attached to the plate by passing the same through a slot in the end of the plate and looping the same therein as shown more particularly in Fig. 2. The opposite end of the plate A, has an oblong slot a, made through it so that the strap B, inay be passed through it from either side of the plate as occasion may require.

On each side of the plate A the name of a station on the route is engraved, stamped, or otherwise marked, see Figs. l, and 3, Columbia. via Raleigh being stamped on the side of the plate shown in Fig. l, and VVeldon via Raleigh on the side shown in Fig. 3. The number of the check inay be stamped on each side of it. By this arrangement the plate or check A, is made to serve as two different checks for the name of a station is stamped on either side of it, and either side may be made the face of the check by passing the strap B, through the slot a, from the side opposite the face side so that the strap will cover or be fitted over the reverse side of the plate. In Fig. l, the side having Columbia via Raleigh,,, is the face side, and in Fig. 3 the opposite side having Weldon via Raleigh on it, is the face side. It will be seen therefore that the names of two different stations are stamped on one plate, one on each side, and that either side by the adjusting of the strap as described may be made the face or obverse side and consequently each plate or check is made to serve the purpose of two and the usual number of plates required will be diminished one half, and considerable expense saved, and as the baggage master will have a` less number of checks to sort over in adjusting them to baggage, the operation of checking baggage will be much facilitated.

It will be understood that the strap B, is used to attach the plate or check to the baggage and hence it is made to serve a double purpose viz, the attaching of the plate or check to the baggage and a means for designating the face or obverse from the reverse side and reversing or changing said sides as required.

I do not claim broadly, stamping or engraving the names of the different stations on one plate or check, one at each side, for it is quite common to employ both sides of signs, slates, etc., for analogous purposes, and the mere employment of both sides of a baggage check for directing surfaces, even if practicable, would not be invention, therefore;

Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire' to secure by Letters Patent, is-

stamping, engraving or otherwise marking on the plate or check A, the names of two different stations, one at each side, when said plate, thus stamped or engraved, is used in connection with a strap B, attached to the plate and rendered capable of being adjusted as shown for the purpose specified.
