2 Claims. (01. 306- 28 This invention relates to window cleaning destantially throughout its length. At one end vices. thereof, the handle portion [6 has a conical An object of this invention is to provide a winstraight end portion 20, and extending from dow cleaning device for cleaning the outside of said portion, is a curved portion 2| of relatively Windows, while standing inside the room, to elimismall radius, from which there extends a pornate danger of falling. tion 220i relatively large radius. The portion In the accompanying drawing, in which is 20 of the handle part 16, is formed with a small 25 shown one of the various possible illustrative Opening 33 adapted o ce ve t e hooked end embodiments of this invention, of the hook portion 3i.
Fig. 1 is a side, elevational, cross-sectional view The handle part I! may be slight y Curved and of a window, and cleaning device embodying the has a tapered rf e 5 at its outer end cominvention; plementary to the tapered surface 24. When 30 Fig. 2 is a longitudinal, cross-sectional i the surfaces 24 and 35 are in mutual contact, the of a portion of the handle, illustrating the joint handle P forms an eXlieIlSiOh 0 e ha dle between the parts of the handle; part [6. Fig. 5 is a top plan view of a squeegee adapted Attached to the top Surface of e p rt 40 to be used with my improved n and Jacent the tapered end thereof, is a plate 31 40 Fig 6 is longitudinal, t ,1 View screwed thereto as by screw 38. The plate 31 has similar to Fig. 2, but illustrating the joint with a an upstanding p 9 adjace t the outer end wedge block to change the angle of the handle. thereof- Said Plate 37 has an Opening 49 g s- Referring now in detail to the drawing, In ms W e Opening A bo t eXtendS designates a window frame provided with double through the reg st p gs 25, 35 and 45 hung window sashes II and I2, slidably mounted and serves to attach together the handle parts in the frame. In Fig. 1, numeral i4 designates l6 and 11. A win ut 42 On t e bolt 4| serves a window cleaning device embodying the invento tighten the bolt. tion for cleaning the outside of the window A metal strap 44 screwed to the tapered end of sashes II and [2. The device l4 comprises a the handle part l6, as by Screw r o n s 50 handle l5 which may be made of parts or sections the mutually contacting tapered p r ion f the IG and I1, and a brush l8 at one end of the hanhandle parts l6 and I! to firmly hold said handle 1 parts against separation.
The handle part l6 may be made of wood or The brush l8 may be of any usual construction any other suitable material, and is curved subd s a back 50 Provided with 91 P of 55 clined sockets 5i. Attached to the back 50 is an apertured metal plate 52 having an aperture or opening 53. The plate 52 is disposed in a plane perpendicular to, and extending longitudinally of the back 50.
The method of attaching the brush to the handle will now be described. The outer end of the handle part I6 is shown in dotted lines in Fig. 4 in attached position with respect to the brush 50. The tip of the tapered portion 20, of the handle part E6, fits within one of the sockets 5|. The end of the hook portion 3| engages within the opening 33, and the hooked end of the hook 32 engages within the opening 53 of the plate 52. The member 29 being made of spring wire is maintained under tension when the hook portion 32 engages the plate 52 for holding the brush on the handle.
If desired the brush I8 may be connected to the handle part It for pivotal movement with respect thereto. To this end there is provided a conical tubular metallic member provided with a pair of spaced, flat, apertured ears 6| at the smaller end thereof. The plate portion 52 of the brush, may be inserted between the apertured ears GI, and a bolt 62 passed through the apertures in said ears and through the opening 53, the bolt being tightened by wing nuts 63. The brush I 8 may then pivot about the axis of the bolt 6 2. The tapered portion 20, of the handle part I6, is inserted into the conical tubular member 60 and attached thereto by a screw passing through an opening 54 in said member, or in any other suitable manner.
It will now be understood that a person standing within the room and holding the handle l5 may brush the outside of the windows for cleaning the same. When the member 60 is used, the brush 5% may pivot about the axis of the bolt 62 during the brushing or cleaning operation.
The brush l 8 may be replaced by a squeegee 65. The squeegee comprises the wiping blade 66 held by an elongated, channel shaped member 61. EX- tending from the channel shaped member 61, at right angles thereto, is a conical tubular member 68 to receive the tapered portion 20 of the handle. Fixed to the middle of the chanel shaped member 67, is an inclined plate 69 formed with an opening it. The tubular portion 68 is formed with an opening ll aligned with the opening '10, and registering with opening 33 in tapered portion 20 of the handle. To attach the squeegee to the handle, the hook portion 3| is engaged within the openings ll and 33, and the hook portion 32 is engaged within the opening 10.
Means is provided for changing the angle of the handle l5. To this end, there may be interposed between the tapered surfaces 24 and 35, a wedge shaped block 80, having a central elongated notch BI to straddle the bolt 4|. To interpose the block 80, the wing nut 42 is first loosened sufficiently to permit insertion of the wedge. It will be noted that the strap 44 engages the lip 39 of the plate 31 when the wedge block is inserted between the handle part It and IT.
The handle part l6 and Il may be made of laminated sheets of wood or of any other material.
It will thus be seen that there is provided a device in which the several objects of this invention are achieved, and which is well adapted to meet the conditions of practical use.
It is further to be understood that in some cases it may be desired to eliminate the two part handle so as to construct it out of a single member. In this instance the handle part 16 and I! will be integrally formed, but of course will be constructed of the curved shape as shown in Fig. 1.
As various possible embodiments might be made of the above invention, and as various changes might be made in the embodiments above set forth, it is to be understood that all matter herein set forth or shown in the accompanying drawing is to be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. In combination, a handle having a conical portion at one end, an eyelet attached to said handle adjacent said conical portion, said conical portion being formed with an opening adjacent said eyelet, a brush having a socket receiving the outer tip of said conical portion, and a member made of a single piece of wire, having an intermediate looped portion receiving said eyelet, and a pair of hook portions extending from said loop portion, one of said hook portions engaging the opening in said conical portion, an apertured member fixed to said brush, and said other hook portion engaging the aperture in said last mentioned member.
2. In combination, a handle having an opening adjacent one end thereof, an eyelet on said handle adjacent said opening, a member made of single piece of resilient wire having an intermediate portion engaging said eyelet, and a pair of oppositely hooked portions disposed in the same plane, a cleaning implement having a socket receiving the tip end of the handle, an apertured member on said implement, one of said hooked portions engaging said opening in said handle and the other hook portion engaging the aperture in said apertured member.
