G. IVBSON. Broqm and Brush Head.
Patented June 17,1879.`
"PETERS, FMOTOLTHOGRAPNER, WASHIGTON. D. C. V
,UNITED STATES PATENT EFICIELv GEORGE IVESON, OF GREENWIGH STATION, OHIO.
IMPROVEMENT IN BROOM AND B`RUSH HEADS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 216,570, dated June 17, 1879 application filed February 10, 1879.
Y part of this specification, and in which- Figure l is a side view of my improved broom or brush head. Fig. 2 is a vertical section thereof, and Fig. 3 is a perspective view l of the wedge-shaped compressor-bar detached from the head.
`The same part in the several figures is designated by the same letter.
This invention relates to that class of heads for brooms and brushes which admit of change or renewal of the straw or broom corn when desired; and it consists in the combination, with a socketed handle and hollow attened cap, of a forked or bifurcated spring bow or clamp and wedge-shaped compressorbar, operating in conjunction with the clamp and cap, substantially as hereinafter more fully set forth.
In the annexed drawings, A marks a cap, adapted to fit over the upper end of the straw portion of the broom, the lower edge thereof being strengthened byformingthereonaan ge, a. The upper end of this cap is provided with a tubular socket, a', to receive the lower end of the handle B. y
C is the straw portion ofthe broom, put together in two layers, one layer placed upon one side of the clamp-bar, to be hereinafter described, and the other layer placed upon the opposite side of said bar. The bringing together of the straw may be done preliminary to fitting it upon the bar of the clamp by the use of a temporary wooden bar, with reference to which it is arranged, as above mentioned, in connection with the clamp-bar.
Upon inserting the clamp-bar the wooden bar is removed and of no further use in the securing of the broom-straw.
The clamping device consists of the bar D, above referred to, tapered in cross-section toward its upper end to provide for the passage of the straw. Sprung over the ends of this tapering or wedge-shaped bar D, which may be slotted or recessed, as at e e, is a bow, d, whose lower ends are bent inwardly toward each other to tit over the bar D, or ratherinto its recesses or slots 0 e, as shown at d1. l The upper end of the bow d is provided with a central screw, d2, which reaches up into the tubular socket a of the cap A. The handle B, (which is provided with a screw-threaded socket, j',) when inserted into the socket or neck a of the cap A, receives the screw d2 of the clamping device, and by turning the handle to the right it draws the compress-bar D up into the cap A to a certain extent, clamping it against the straw interposed between it and theinward-projeeting [ianges or shoulders t a of the cap A, by which the straw is firmly held in the cap and the cap to the handle. i
By a reverse movement of the handle the respective parts are readily detachable, one from the other. y. 1
Having thus fully described my improvement, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The combination, with the hollow iianged cap or head A and handle B, of the adjustable spring bow or clamp d d* and detachable wedge-bar or compressor D, substantially as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereunto affixed my signature inpresence of two witnesses.
GEORGE IVESON.
