Filed July 5, 1957 'Patented July 11,?1939 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE signor to the rm S chweizerische Lokomotivund Maschinenfabrik, Winterthur, Switzerland- Application July 3, 1937, Serial No.v151,919 In Germany July 10, 1936 3 Claims.
This invention relates to patrices having classier indentations withinA a V-shaped aperture.
The invention is for an improvement in and a modification of patrices of this kind for use in type line composing and printing machines and consists in the provision that the patrix body is provided with a longitudinal recess for receiving the type. e
It is known, to connect type to' patrix bodies of, uniform thickness by riveting or casting.
With type of relatively small thickness the material of the type left after considering the thickness of the patrix body becomes so thin that the type frequently break during the riveting or after the casting operation. Furthermore; it is easily possible that the type, when riveted on inclines slightly out of true position, due to the fact that the soft type metal inhibits clamping the type rmly.
In the patrix according to the presenty invention, the patrix body is provided vat about the longitudinalV axis thereof, thus at the portion contacting with the type, with a recess the depth f of which corresponds about to half the thickness of the patrix'body and the width. of which is exactly equal to the lateral dimensions of the type. By this means, it is possible to cast the type in larger thicknessesr and to guide each type properly, when riveted to the patrix body.
Furthermore, such type are prevented from shift- Ving out of position during use.
VIn the accompanying drawing several con-i structional examples of' the invention are illustrated by way of example only, in which Fig. 1 is a view of a patrix provided with a type which was cast thereonto;
Fig. 2 shows a side elevation of Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is a cross section on the line III-III in Fig. 1;
i 40 Fig. 4 is a view of av type cast on to both sides of the patrix body;
Fig. A5 shows a side elevation of Fig. 4; Fig. 6 is a cross section on the line VI-VI in Fig. 4, andV Fig. 7 is across section of a patrix provided with a type projecting on both sides beyond the patrix body. 4
The patrix body p has ears a, b, c, d' for guiding the patrix, whilst the classifier indentations 21, z2 provided in the V-shaped aperture V serve for distributing the patrices to the guide passages of the magazine. 'I'he hole Z and the incision lc serve for classifying the various kinds of characters used, and in addition three holes are provided for the reception of plugs f. The type t is provided with an upper extension e which is arranged between'the classifier indentations 21, z2 and carries the character image. The charac- (Cl. lOl-398) ter images on thetype cast onto the body are produced by means of a mold r which can be applied for effecting type castings for use in type composing by hand.
In Fig. 1 this mold is shown to be removed. The recess i of the patrix body serves for receiving the type t for which it provides guidance in the transverse direction. The recess i further permits to cast the type onto both sides of the patrix body p so as not to project therefrom on one' side (Fig. 6). jects on both sides beyond the patrix body p (Fig. '7), this recess provides increased staying in the transverse direction, so that the connecting plugs are relieved.
I do not limit myself to the particular size, shape, number or arrangement of parts as shown Also for the type t, which proand described, all of which may be varied withcharacter image on said extension is situated l beyond said classifier indentations.
2. In a patrix having classifier indentations, a patrix body having a V-shaped aperture provided with classifier indentations on both Shanks thereof and also being provided with ya longitudinally extending recess, a type having an extension carrying the character image and being mounted in said recess of the patrix symmetrically disposed between the two Shanks thereof, whereby the thickness of the type is greater to the extent of the depth of the recess, and the strength of the type and the security of its attachment to the patrix are increased.
3. In a patrix having classifier indentations, a patrix having a V-shaped aperture provided with classier indentations on both shanks thereof and also being provided with a longitudinally extending recess, a type having a width equal to the width of said recess and extending into said recess, an extension provided on said type carrying the character image and being symmetrically disposed between said two shanks, whereby the thickness of the type is greater by the depth of the recess in which it lies, and its strength and security of attachment to the patrix are increased.
