This invention relates to type beds and holders and the object of the invention is to provide a type bed having a series of grooves in which the holders may be positioned and arranged so that type may be secured on the type bed in any desired position.
Another object of the invention is to provide a series of spring metal type holders arranged to be frictionally engaged in the grooves in the type bed so that type may be secured on the bed between the sides of the holders or between the ends of the holders.
Another object of the invention is to provide a type bed arranged so that odd shaped pieces of type, cuts etc., may be secured on the type bed in any position desired and also arranged so that different size standard type may be secured on the bed in any angular position or horizontally or longitudinally of the type bed.
A further object of the invention is to provide a type bed having a series of parallel grooves formed therein and a series of spring metal holders arranged to be frictionally engaged in the grooves to support the type between the spaced holders.
Another object of the invention is to provide a type bed comprising a series of spaced parallel grooves and a series of holders arranged to be frictionally engaged in the grooves, the ends of the holders extending at an angle to overlie the bases of the type or the like, to hold the same in any desired position on the type bed.
A further object of the invention is to provide a type bed having spaced parallel grooves and spring metal holders arranged to be frictionally engaged in the grooves, the holders being in any desired length to support type between the holders and smaller holders being provided having undercut ends to engage type pieces between said undercut ends and hold the type pieces in the desired position on the bed.
These objects and the several novel features of the invention are hereinafter more fully described and claimed and the preferred form of construction by which these objects are attained is shown in the accompanying drawing in which- Fig. 1 is a plan view of a type bed showing the different methods of holding type thereon by means of the holders.

Fig. 3 is a perspective view of one of the shorter type holders showing the undercut end.
Fig. 4 is an enlarged section taken on line 4-4 of Fig. 1.
The type bed I may be made of any suitable nally of the bed. These grooves 3 also provide 10 re-inforcing ribs therebetween to stiffen and strengthen the type bed and re-inforce the same.
The type holders comprise longitudinal strips of spring metal 4 which are in the form of an inverted U in cross section and at the lower 15 edge are provided with slightly inturned edges 5 to allow the spring metal holders to be pressed into the grooves 2 in the type bed. These holders 4 are preferably slightly larger at the return bend than the width of the grooves so that the holders above the slots extend slightly over the edges of the slots and provide a slightly angular face above the slots to hold the type 6 between these slightly angular faces as will be understood from Fig. 2. The spring metal holders 4 may extend clear across the type bed or may be made in shorter lengths if desired. Also the holders may be spaced several rows apart by being inserted in different slots 2 to accommodate type of different sizes as will be understood from Figs.
1 and 2. The type are preferably formed of rubber composition and when pressed into place between the angular sides of two spaced holders these angular sides will hold the type in position on the type bed.
If it is desired to mount the type lengthwise of the type bed the type bed may be turned over to allow use of the longitudinal grooves 3 in which the holders may be positioned to support the type longitudinally of the type bed.
In Figs. 3 and 4 an alternative form of holder is shown. In these figures the spring metal holders each have the same cross sectional form but at least one end of each holder is cut off at an' angle at less than a right angle to the upper face as shown in Fig. 3 to provide an overhanging lip I. As will be understood from Fig. 4, the holders may be inserted in the grooves 2 and moved to position to engage over the edge of the type bases 8 and the holders are positioned on opposite sides of a piece of type as shown at the bottom of Fig. 1 to support and hold the type in position on the type bed. It is also possible to support odd shaped pieces of type such as cuts, odd shapes and other forms which may be firmly mounted on the type bed in this manner. By pressing the angular edges 9 of the type holders into position against the type bases so that the lip I engages slightly over the type bases the frictional engagement of the'holders in the type bed grooves prevents displacement of the type and firmly holds the same on the type bed. As there are two angular edges 9 on the end of each type holder one edge or the other is always in engagement with the respective type base even though the type base extends at considerable angularity to the holder.
In some cases where the type faces extend out to the edge of the type bases the pressure of the holders against the type might distort the faces of the type and for this reason straight bars I0, may be provided on opposite sides of a strip of type as shown in the center of Fig. 1. In this method of mounting the holders are pressed into engagement with the bars l0 and the type is held between the bars so that the holders will not distort the type. It will also be noted that with this arrangement the type may be positioned at any angle or at any point desired on the type bed by use of suflicient holders to hold and support the type in position on the type bed and as many holders as desired may be used with any piece or section of type. By this arrangement the type may be arranged in different positions on the type bed so that the resultant printed card will instantly attract attention to whatever message may be displayed.
From the foregoing description it becomes evident that the device is very simple and efficient in operation, will not easily get out of order, provides a type bed on which type may be mounted practically over the entire area of the bed and in any desired position thereon and provides a device which accomplishes the objects described.
Having thus fully described my invention, its utility and mode of operation, What I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is- 1. A device of the character described, comprising a type bed having a series of spaced parallel grooves, a series of type holders arranged for insertion in the grooves, each holder having at least one end formed at an acute angle providing a holder of less lengthat the base than at the top whereby the upper edge overlies the bottom edge when positioned in a groove of the type bed, and a rubber like compressible type having a base engaging the bed, the holders being slidable in the grooves to wedgingly engage the type and prevent the type from being lifted from the bed in a printing operation.
2. A type bed of flat form having spaced parallel grooves, a series of type holders formed of a strip of sheet metal bent to form parallel side walls providing spring side elements engageable in the grooves, at least one end of the holder being cut at less than a right angle to the longitudinal face of the bend providing a structure in which the upper face of the holder overlies the bottom edges of the side flanges when positioned in a groove, a rubber type element positionable on the bed, the holders being positionable with the respective angularly formed end portions in wedging engagement with the type to prevent displacement thereof in a plane parallel with its base or at a right angle thereto.
3. A type bed of flat form having spaced paral lel grooves, a series of type holders formed of a strip of sheet metal rebent upon itself to form parallel side faces engageable in the grooves, at least one end of the holder being cut at an angle less than a right angle to the plane of the bend of the holder providing an end portion, the upper edge of which overlies the lower edge of the side flanges when positioned in a groove, and a printing element having a fiat base and a printing face extending thereabove, the holders being positionable with the said angular ends thereof in wedging engagement with and providing the sole means of supporting the printing element from displacement in a plane parallel with or at a right angle to the face of the bed, the arrangement permitting disposition of the printing element at various angles in respect to the grooves.
4. A type bed of fiat form having spaced parallel grooves, a series of type holders formed of a strip of resilient sheet metal bent to form spring side elements engageable in the groove, a rubber type element having a flat base positionable on the bed, type engaging bars slidable on the bed with edge portions thereof in engagement with the respective edges of the type element, the holders being slidable in the grooves to force the type supporting bars to pressure engagement with the type preventing displacement of the type in a plane parallel with or at a right angle to the face of the bed.
