6 Claims.
This invention relates to a gluing machine and has for its object to provide, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, a new and improved feed means for the work which is to have one face coated with glue or other adhesive material.
A further object of the invention is to set up, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, a gluing machine of that type including pick-offs and being provided with an improved position of the bar for supporting the pick-offs.
A further object of the invention is to provide, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, a gluing machine having an improved position of the guide roll for the work when the latter is being acted upon.
A further object of the invention is to provide, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, a gluing machine including a new and improved form of pickoiT elements so constructed to facilitate and to expedite the continuous picking-off of the work from the glue applying roller when the work is being acted upon, as well as permitting of said elements being conveniently mounted in and removed from active position when desired.
A further object of the invention is to provide, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, a gluing machine including a pivoted shiftable superstructure carrying a platform for the work and with the platform provided with an adjustable resiliently mounted work feed.
A further object of the invention is to provide, in the manner as hereinafter set forth, a gluing machine having a new and improved adjustable resiliently controlled doctor.
A further object of the invention is to provide, in the manner as hereinafter set forth, a gluing machine including pick-offs, each being in the form of suspended gravity lowering carriers so formed as to enable picker fingers to be selectively secured to the sides of its forward terminal portion or to permit of picker fingers being secured to both Sides of said terminal portion.
Further objects of the invention are to provide, in the manner as hereinafter set forth, a gluing machine which is comparatively simple in its construction and arrangement, strong, durable, compact, readily assembled, very eicient in its use and comparatively inexpensive to manufacture.
To the above ends essentially and to those which may hereinafter appear, the invention consists of the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be more specifically referred to and illustrated in the accompanying drawings where there is shown an embodiment of the invention, but it is -to be understood that changes, variations and modifications may be resorted to which fall within the scope of the invention as claimed.

The machine includes a base structure, generally indicated at I, and a superstructure generally indicated at 2. 'I'he structure I provides a support for the structure 2 and when the machine is in position to be used, the structure 2 is arranged in superimposed relation with respect to the structure I.
The structure I includes a hollow open top and closed bottom body part generally indicated at II and which provides a chamber 5 for the glue or other adhesive material. The structure 4 ccnsists of a bottom 6, a pair of side walls 1, 8 of like form, a front wall' 9 and a rear wall I0 which corresponds in height to the front wall 9. Each side wall has front and rear supporting legs II, I2. The rear edge of a leg II is flush with the outer face of the wall I0. The forward edge of a leg I2 is flush with the outer face of the wall 9. 'Ihe construction of but one side wall is shown and which is side wall 8.
Each side wall has an enlarged portion I3 provided with a cut-out I4 and a lengthwise extending passage I5 opening at its front at the front of structure I and at its rear end into the cutout I4. Secured within'the cut-out I 4 near the rear thereof by the holdfast means I6 is a block I1 provided in its top with a rabbet I8. Each side wall rearwardly of block I'I is provided with a bearing I9. The rear terminal portion of the enlargement I3 is of angular contour and consists of a horizontally disposed leg 2i! merging at its. rear end into a vertically disposed leg 2l. 55
The top edge 22 of leg 2U is horizontally disposed and is flush with the top edge of the bearing I9. The forward edge 23 of the leg 2| is square and vertically disposed. 'The rear end of edge 22 merges into the lower end of the edge 23.
Slidably mounted in each cut-out I4 is a bearing 24 having connected to the front thereof a forwardly extending adjusting bar 25 therefor. The rod 25 extends through the passage l5 and projects forwardly from structure I. The outer terminal portion of rod 25 is peripherally threaded, as at 26 and adjustably engaging therewith is an internally threaded and peripherally knurled adjusting nut 21 for the bar 25. Interposed between the forward edge of the wide wall and the nut 21, as well as surrounding the rod 25, is an abutment collar 28 for nut 21. Encompassing the rod 25 and interposed between the forward end wall of the cut-out I4 and the bearing 24 is a tensioning spring 29 for the latter.
Mounted in the rabbets i8 and anchored tothe blocks I1 by the holdfast means 36 are scraper elements 3| of angular form. Each scraper element 3l extends inwardly from the block I1 to which it is attached and consists of legs 32, 33 disposed at right angles to each other. The leg 32 extends transversely with respect to structure I and the leg 33 depends from the inner end of the leg 32 and is disposed at an inward inclination. The elements 3I extend in opposite directions with respect to each other and are of a length whereby the leg 33 of one element 3l will be spaced from the leg 33 of the other element 3l Extended in lateral relation with respect to one side of the superstructure 2 and the side wall 9 of base structure I is an open bottom sectional housing 34 for a gear train 35 (Figure 5) including a pinion 36, a large gear 31, a pinion 38, a
small gear 39 and a large gear 43. The housing 34 is formed of rear and front sections designated 46a, 46h respectively and which are secured respectively to the structures l and 2. The pinion 36 is the drive for the train and it is driven by a transmission shaft 4I to the inner end of which is fixed said pinion. The shaft 4I extends into housing 34 and has its outer end provided with a drive pulley 42 therefor, which is operated by an endless transmission belt 43, driven from a pulley 44 on the shaft 45 of an electric motor 46. A casing 41, secured to the section 49a of the housing 34, encloses the pulley 42 and the stretch of the belt 43 which passes around pulley 42. The latter is of greater diameter than pulley 44. The pinion 36 meshes with gear 31, the latter meshes with pinion 38 and the gear 39 meshes with gear 40. The gear 31, pinion 38 and gear 46 are for the purpose respectively o-f operating one of the stub shafts 48 of a glue applying roll 49, guide roll 5I and one of the shafts 52 of a doctor roll 53. The gear 31 is on the shaft 46; pinion 38 is on one end of roll 5I; and gear 46 is on shaft 52. The gear 39 is xed to the stub shaft 48 which carries gear 31 and disposed outwardly with respect to the latter.
The stub shafts 48 are mounted in the bearings I9 and the one carrying gear 31 extends laterally from the bearing I9 mounted in side wall 1. The position and mounting of the roll 5I will be referred to. The stub shafts 52 are mounted in the bearings 24 and that one which carries gear 46 extends laterally from the bearing 24 in the wall 1. The latter has secured to its outer face a combined bearing and spacer block 54 through which passes the extended stub shaft 52. The
block, however, may be an inward continuation of the hub of gear 40.
The glue applying roll 49 is of greater diameter than the doctor roll 53 and the latter is of greater diameter than the guide roll 5I. rThe roll 49 is suspended in the chamber 5 by the stub shafts 48 and is of less length than the roll 53. The latter is suspended in the chamber by,the stub shafts 52 forwardly of and in close proximity to the roll 49. The ends of the roll 49 are spaced equi-distant from the side walls 8, 9. The roll 53 has its ends extend equi-distant with respect to the ends of the roll 49 and are spaced equi-distant from the side walls 8, 9. The scrapers 36 bear against the ends of the roll 49.
I'he superstructure 2 includes a pair of upstanding side cheeks 55 of Eke form. Each side cheek comprises a rear part 56 and a forward part 51 of materially less height than the part 56. The latter is formed with a rounded lower rear corner 58, a vertical rear edge 59, horizontal bottom edge portions 60, 6I connected by a vertical shoulder 62 and with the edge portion 60 arranged above the edge portion 6I, a horizontal top edge 63 of less length than the combined length cf the edge portions 63, 6I, and a downwardly extending forwardly inclined front edge portion 64 merging at its lower end into a vertically disposed front edge portion 64a. The front edge of part 56 is of less height than the rear edge of the latter. The part 51 is of oblong contour and of greater length than part 56. The bottom edge portion of part 56 is fiush with and forms a rearward continuation of the bottom edge 6I of part 51. The top edge 66 of the latter aligns with the lower end of the edge portion 64 of part 56. The edge portions 64a of the parts 56 of the cheeks 55 provide a pair of aligning shoulders. Secured upon the top edges 66 of the parts 51 of the cheeks 55 is a table or platform 61 which abuts the shoulders provided by edge portions 84 and has the major portion of the length of its side edges flush with the outer side faces of the parts 51 of the side cheeks. The table 61 extends forwardly with respect to the parts 51 of the side cheeks and the front of base structure I. The parts 56 of the side cheeks 55 are provided intermediate their ends with aligned notches 68 opening at the edges 63 of such parts.
The table or platform 61 is secured to the parts 51 of the cheeks 55 by the holdfast means 69 and it is formed with a rear portion 16 of reduced width but of a width greater than the length of the roll 49. The rear end of the part 16 of table 61 is beveled as indicated at 1I and is disposed in close proximity to the periphery of the roll 49.
The structure 2 is pivoted at its rear end to the structure I and for such purpose the rear portions of the parts 56 of the side cheeks 55 are reduced as indicated at 12, and the legs 2l of walls 8, 9 are rabbeted as at 13. The reduced portions 12 are pivotally connected to the rabbeted portions 13 by pivot pins 14 The rounded shoulders 58 of the side cheeks provide clearance when the superstructure 2 is shifted relatively to the base structure I to open and close the chamber 5, The forward extended portion of the table 61 constitutes what may be termed a handle for elevating and lowering the structure 2 relative to the base structure I.
The guide roll 5I is positioned over and in close proximity to the top of the glue roll 49 rearwardly of and in close proximity tol the vertical median of roll 49. The guide roll 5I is mounted the notches 68 of the parts 56 of the side cheeks Ilan 55. The guide roll 5| is maintained in the notches 68 by the retainers 14a detachably secured to the top edges 63 of the parts 56 of the side cheeks 55 as at 15. l
Arranged over and connected to the reduced portion 16 of the table 61 is an adjustable feed means 16 for the work. The length of the feed means 16 is less than the width of the portion 16 but greater than the length of the roll 49. The feed means 16 consists of a bar 11 provided at its ends with a pair of oppositely extending apertured ears 18. The bar 11 (Figure 4) has a vertical rear edge, a flat top edge and a vertical front edge numbered 19, 86, 8| respectively. The edge 19 is of greater height than the edge 8|. The upper ends of the rear and front edges align. The bar 11 includes a lower edge 82 shaped upon a segment of a circle extending downwardly and rearwardly from the lower end of edge 8| to the lower end of edge 19 whereby the said lower edge 82 is of beveled contour. Extending upwardly through the spaced aligned openings 88, in the portion 16 of the table 61, is a pair of upstanding threaded headed bolts 84 having their heads 85 abut the lower face of said portion 16. The bolts 84 pass through and project above the ears 1S. Threadedly engaging with the portions of the bolts 84, which project above the ears 18 are flanged adjusting sleeves 86 for the bar 11. Surrounding the bolts 84 and interposed between the ears 18 and the portion 16 of table 61 are coiled tensioning springs 81 for bar 11. The lower end of the edge of bar 11 is disposed in close proximity to the edge 1| of portion 16 of table 61. The springs 81 act as yielding suspensions for the bar 11 and normally hold the ears 18 against the adjustable sleeves 86. The tension of the springs 81V is adjusted by the sleeves 86 for the purpo-se of varying the distance between table portion 16 and 11. The work is passed between the lower side of edge 19 of bar 11 and the upper face of the portion 16 of table 61. The springs 81 act to permanently maintain the bar 11 and table 16 in spaced relation.
The side walls 8, 9 of the base structure are connected together by a pick-off support in the form of a rod 89 having an intermediate portion 96 of circular cross section and a pair of flat end portions 9| which are anchored by the holdfast means 92 against the upper part of the rear edges 0f the legs 2| of the walls 8, 9. The portion 96 of rod 89 is arranged between the rear ends of the walls 8, 9.
Removably mounted on the portion 98 of rod 89 are spaced gravity lowering pick-offs 93 disposed in spaced relation and of rlike form. Each pick-off consists of a carrier 94 formed of a substantially inverted U-shaped clutching part 99 which merges at the lower end of its forward side 96 into the top of the rear end of a curved weighting part 91 merging at the top of its forward end into the rear end of a substantially segment shaped head 98, formed with a pair of transversely extending spaced threaded openings 99, |60 which ,are disposed on a line extending diagonally of the head 98 from the lower forward corner |6| of the latter. The opening |66 is arranged in proximity to corner |6|. The opening 99 is arranged forwardly of the vertical median of the head. The thickness of the Dart is materially less than the thickness of the part 91. The width of the part 95 corresponds to the width of the rear portion of the part 91 (see Figs. 4 and 8). The latter has its forward portion gradu ally decreasing in width from its rear portion to the head 98. The width of the latter corresponds to the Width of the point of mergence between the parts 91, 96 and part 98 is disposed centrally with respect to the part 96 and the rear portion of the 91. There is associated with each carrier one or more picker fingers |62 of substantially trapezium contour. Each linger has its end edges |63, |64 feathered. Each finger has its top edge |65 of less length than the bottom edge |06. The edge |63 extends at an inward inclination from one end of edge |66 to one end'of edge |65. The edge |64 extends at an inwardinclination from the other end of edge |69 to the other end of edge |95. Each nger is formed with a pair of horizontally aligned spaced openings |61-, |68 arranged adjacent opposite sides of the transverse median thereof. When the pick-off includes a single finger, the latter may be selectively secured to either one of the sides of the head 98. When the pick-off includes two fingers they are secured to opposite sides of the head 98, When a finger is secured to a head it is disposed at an angle with respect to and projects downwardly from the head. A nger is detachably coupled cr secured to a. head by a headed screw |69 passing through an opening |61 or 168 and threadedly engaging in an opening 99 or |66. The length of the shank of the screw |69 is such that when securing a finger in position, the shank will extend only a part of the length of opening 99 or |66. The openings 99, |66, |68, |61 are provided to enable the adjusting the position of the linger relative to head 98. The weighting part of the carrier tends to maintain the lower forward corner ofv the finger upon the top of the glue applying roll rearwardly of the guide roll.
The chamber 5 may be termed a glue or adhesive reservoir. The doctor roll 53 is resiliently disposed relative to the front of the glue applying roll 49. The table 61 provides a work support and also functions as a closure for the major portion of the top of chamber or reservoir 5. The scrapers 36 act upon the ends of roll 49. The feed means 16 is vertically adjustable to compensate for varying thickness of the paper or work to be acted upon and is disposed in such relation to the roll 49 to provide for application of the glue throughout the surface of the work to be acted upon. 'I'he doctor roll functions to limit the amount of the glue on that portion of the periphery of roll 49 employed to apply the glue to a surface of the work. The blocks |1 are so arranged relative to bearings |9 to hold the latter tight. The superstructure 2 when inV superimposed position relative to the base structure holds the doctor roll bearings down.
The intermediate portion 96 of the support 89 is of slightly greater diameter than the distance between the front and rear of the inverted U-Shaped clutching part 95 of carrier 94 whereby the support 89 and carrier 94 are clutched together by a snapping action to prevent their separation when the machine is operating, but the clutching is such as to arrest the tendency of the pick-off continuously bearing on the glue applying roller.
What I claim is:
1. In a gluing machine, a horizontally disposed work supporting table adapted to have its rear end disposed in close proximity to an adhesive applying roll for the work, a bar disposed transversely of the inner end of said table and having its rear side aligning with the rear edge of the table, said bar formed at its ends with oppositely disposed apertured ears, a pair of threaded headed bolts extending upwardly through the table in proximity to its rear edge, the heads of said bolts bearing against the lower face of the table, said bolts extending through and projecting above said ears, adjusters for the bar threadably engaging with the bolts above and bearing on said ears, and coil springs encompassing said bolts and interposed between said ears and the upper face of the table.
2. In a gluing machine of that type including an adhesive applying roll, the combination of a base structure for revolubly supporting said roll and being formed with an adhesive reservoir into which said roll extends, a transverse bar secured to the rear part of said structure, forwardly directed carriers each including a weighter intermediate part, an inverted U-shaped rear part for seating on said bar and a head extended forwardly from said intermediate part, picker fingers adapted to be selectively positioned against opposite sides of the head and positioned against both sides of the head, said heads and fingers having coacting means to provide for adjustably positioning the fingers relative to the heads, and means for anchoring the iingers to the heads in selected and adjusted positions.
3. In a gluing machine of that type including a revoluble adhesive applying roll, a work supporting table adapted to have its inner end positioned in proximity to and arranged below the top of said roll, a bar disposed transversely over and arranged in spaced relation to the upper surface of the table, said bar having its rear end surface aligned with the rear edge of the table, upstanding suspension springs for the bar bearing at their upper ends against the lower surfaces of the end terminal portions of the bar for maintaining the latter in spaced relation to the upper surface of the table, and a carrying structure for said springs connected to the table and including adjustable means bearing on the upper surface of the bar for adjusting the tension of the springs to Vary the distance between the lower surface of the bar and the upper surface of the table, and said means and springs coacting with the bar for maintaining the latter in its adjusted position.
4, In a gluing machine of that type including a revoluble adhesive applying roll, a base structure for revolubly supporting said roll and being formed with an adhesive reservoir into which said roll depends, said structure having the upper portion of its rear cut out, a transverse supporting bar arranged in said cut out and secured to said structure, forwardly directed carriers, each including a depending weighting intermediate part, a rear end part extended upwardly from the top of the rear end of the intermediate part for detachably mounting on said bar and a front end part in the form of a head extended forwardly from the top of the front end of said intermediate part, work pick-up fingers correlated with said roll for removing the work from the latter and adapted to be selectively positioned against a selected side and positioned against both sides of a head, and means coacting with said heads for detachably anchoring the fingers in selected and in adjusted positions relative to the heads.
5. In a gluing machine of that type including a revoluble adhesive applying roll, a base structure for revolubly supporting said roll and being formed with an adhesive reservoir into which said roll depends, a supporting bar disposed transversely of the rear of the upper portion of and secured to said structure, carriers disposed in the upper portion of said structure, each carrier formed of a one-piece body including a rear part for detachably connecting the carrier to said bar, a front part in the form of a head and an intermediate part depending from said other parts, said intermediate part providing a weighting means for the carrier and having its sides disposed in offset relation with respect to the sides of the head of a carrier, adjustable work pick-up iingers correlated with said roll for removing the Work from the roll and adapted to be positioned against at least one side of a head, and means providing for the adjustment of the fingers relative to the heads.
6. In a gluing machine of that type including a revoluble adhesive applying roll, a base structure for revolubly supporting said roll and being formed with an adhesive'reservoir into which said roll depends, a supporting bar disposed transversely of the rear of the upper portion of and secured to said structure, carriers disposed in the upper portion of said structure, each carrier formed of a one-piece body including a rear part for detachably connecting the carrier to said bar, a front part in the form of a head and an intermediate part depending from said other parts, said intermediate part providing a weighting means for the carrier and having its sides disposed in offset relation with respect to the sides of the head of a carrier, adjustable work pick-up fingers correlated with said roll for removing the work from the roll and adapted to be positioned against at least one side of a head, means providing for the adjustment of the fingers relative to the heads, said ngers being in the form of a frustum of a triangle and provided with a pair of spaced horizontally aligned openings, each of said heads being formed with a pair of spaced diagonally aligned threaded openings for normally registering with the openings of a finger, and the said means passing through at least one of the openings of the fingers to threadedly engage with the wall of at least one of the openings in the heads.
