Application January 4, 1938, Serial No. 183,258
3 Claims.
This invention relates to a liquid dispensing apparatus and while primarily intended for dispensing liquid shampoo in hair dressing establishments or for applying wave-set solution when curling hair in the manner commonly known in the art as finger waving, it is obvious that the device may be employed for any other purposes wherein it is found to be applicable.
Important objects and advantages of the invention are to provide a liquid dispenser of the character described, which will facilitate and expedite hair dressing operations, which embodies a force pump appliance for applying the liquid, which is adapted to receive and support the liquid in its original container, which may conveniently be operated by one hand, which is simple in its construction and arrangement, durable and efficient in its use, compact, sanitary, attractive in appearance, and economical in its manufacture, installation, operation and maintenance.
With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts herein specifically described and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, but it is to be understood that the latter is merely illustrative of an embodiment of the invention, and that the actual needs of practice and manufacture may necessitate certain mechanical variations from the embodiment shown. It is, therefore not intended to limit the invention to the disclosure thereof illustrated, but rather to define such limitations in the scope of the claims hereunto appended.
In the drawing wherein like numerals of reference designate corresponding parts throughout the several views:
Figure 1 is a side elevational view, partly in cross section, of a liquid dispensing apparatus 40 constructed in accordance with the invention.
Figure 2 is a rear view of the supporting bar and of associated parts.
Referring in detail to the drawing 1 denotes a dished annular holder constructed of any suitable material preferably sheet metal. The holder comprises an enlarged top portion 2 and a reduced bottom portion 3. The wall of the latter converges toward the apertured diametric center of its lower end. The holder has an open top,
r and the top edge margin thereof is rolled outwardly to form an annular reenforcing head 4.
The holder I is adapted to receive and support a jug type of container 5 in the vertical upside down position and is shaped accordingly, as clear- 1y illustrated in Figure 1. The shoulder 6 of the container is seated upon the shoulder ll of the top portion 2 of the holder, and the neck 8 thereof projects into the reduced bottom portion 3 of said holder. The open end of the neck is spaced from but disposed adjacent to the apertured 5 lower end of the holder bottom portion.
Liquid shampoo and wave-set solution is almost universally handled and sold in the trade in one gallon glass jug containers and in consequence the holder l is shaped to best adapt same to re- 10 ceive and support such type of container. However, it will be apparent that the size and contour of the holder may be varied to accommodate any other type of container.
The holder l is removably supported in the 15 vertical position by a vertically disposed supporting bar 9 and a horizontally disposed suspension band It]. The supporting bar is preferably constructed of channel iron to reenforce same, and has its upper end permanently secured 20 to the suspension band by welding or in' any other suitable manner. The suspension band extends forwardly at right angles to the supporting bar and surrounds the holder directly beneath the head 4, the latter seating on the top edge of the suspension band.
The holder l is further supported by a forwardly projecting rest l2, which is welded orvotherwise fixed to the supporting bar in spaced relation to and below the suspension band. The rest I2 is 30 preferably shaped to conform to the holder shoulder 7, which latter seats thereon and thereby maintains the holder with the container 5 in their Vertical position by preventing the sagging of the suspension band Hi from the combined weight of said holder and container. The supporting bar 9 is intended to be rigidly secured to a wall or other supporting structure by means of attaching screws l3, or in any other suitable manner. 40
The container 5 may readily be positioned in or removed from the holder l, and the latter may likewise be conveniently mounted in or removed from its supporting elements. The height of the holder is preferably such that the greater portion of the inserted container will project above the top of the holder. While the engagement of the container in the holder is ample to maintain said container in its perpendicular upside down position, the projection of the latter, in the man- 50 ner stated, will apprise the operator when the liquid contents M of the container is comparatively low.
An applicator I5 is employed for applying the liquid contents I4 to the hair and scalp, and 55 be provided with avalve 2| apparatus,
comprises a cylindrical receptacle It provided with a removable cover I! preferably having a screw thread engagement with the top of said receptacle. A flexible hose 18, of suitable length, is provided for conveying the liquid contents M of the container 5 to the receptacle by gravity. The upper end of the hose is communicably joined to the apertured diametric center of the holder bottom portion 3 by a suitable coupling 19, and the lower end thereof is communicably joined with the top of the receptacle cover I! by a suitable coupling 20. The lower end of the hose may also operable for controlling or suspending the flow of the liquid contents from the container 3 to the receptacle I6.
The applicator l5 embodies a force pump 22 fixed in the upper portion of the receptacle I6, and is provided with a discharge pipe 23 having a nozzle 24 also fixed in the upper portion of said receptacle. The receptacle is of a size and shape to fit the hand and its periphery may be knurled,
engrailed or' corrugated to afford a better hand gripping engagement. A resilient, forwardly projecting clamp 25 is welded or otherwise secured to the supporting bar 9 for engaging and supporting the applicator when the latter is not in use.
In the operation of the improved dispensing the fluid contents M will flow from the upside down container 5 into the holder bottom portion 3 only to a depth submerging the open end of the container neck 8, after which the contents will flow by gravity from the container to the receptacle 16 through the hose I8, whereby said receptacle will alwaysbe kept in the filled condition. The operator grasps the receptacle in the palm of his hand and operates the force pump 22 with his fore finger to eject the fluid with a stream-like squirting action from the receptacle into the hair and scalp of the customer.
An important advantage of the dispensing apparatus is that same may be easily and effectively operated by one hand, whereby the other hand is free to manipulate the hair to more properly receive the application of the shampoo or waveset solution. -Further, the applicator may be conveniently operatedand manipulated to force and direct thesolution to any parts of the hair and scalp to uniformly disperse the solution through said hair and on said scalp.
The present invention provides a most efl'icient. device of its kind, which is attractively and compactly constructed, and which is conveniently operable for uniformly and effectively applying shampoo or waveset solutions to the hair and scalp in the most economical manner.
