(Cl. 222-191) The present invention relates to an accessory for hand operable power tools and, more particularly, to a combination handle and polish dispenser for a hand operable polisher.
t is an important object of the invention to provide a new and novel combination handle and liquid polish dispenser for use with a hand operable power polisher.
Another important object of the invention is to provide a new and novel polish dispersing handle for attachment to a hand operable polishing tool, which polish dispensing handle includes a cylindrical container of a length and breadth that can be firmly grasped in the hand and which is adapted to contain a supply of liquid polish, and manually operable pump means associated with the container including a spout for dispensing the polish.
Another object of the invention is to provide a new and novel polish dispensing handle of thecharacter described which substantially reduces the time required for a polishing job inasmuch as the polish may be readily applied when and where needed without releasing the polishing tool whereby there is no delay for hand application of the polish.
A more detailed object of the invention is to provide a new and novel polish dispensing handle of the character described wherein the dispensing spout is fiexible whereby the operator can direct the dispensing of the polish as needed on the surface to be polished and wherein the nozzle of the spout extends beyond the outer edge of the polishing pad of the polishing tool whereby the polish is applied away from the polishing pad to prevent soaking thereof.
A still further object of the invention is to provide a new and novel polish dispensing handle of the character described wherein the dispensing spout and the nozzle thereon are provided with a rubber-like coating whereby to prevent scratching of the surface being polished.
Certain other objects of the invention will, in part, be
obvious, and will in part appear hereinafter.
For a more complete understanding of the nature and scope of the invention reference may now be had to the accompanying drawings wherein:
FIG. 1 is a top plan view of a conventional hand operable power polisher provided with a polish dispensing handle embodying the invention;
FIG. 2 is an enlarged lon itudinal section taken through the polish dispensing handle of FIG. 1; and
FIG. 3 is a right end elevational view of the polish dispensing handle as viewed in FIG. 2.
In FIG. =1 there is illustrated a conventional hand operable power tool adapted to serve as a polishing tool. The power tool 10 includes an elongated housing '11 having a rear end shaped to provide a first gripping handle 12, a drive shaft (not shown) suitably supported within the housing 11 and projecting downwardly from the forward end thereof, an electric motor (not shown) within the housing operably connected for rotating the drive shaft, and a power cord 13 for the electric motor which extends from the rear end of the first gripping handle 12. A tool rest 15 is mounted on the top of the housing 11 and a polishing pad in the form of a wool bonnet i6 is mounted on the drive shaft for rotary polishing action during operation of the electric motor. Each side of the housing 11 is provided with an opening (not shown) 3-,lh4fi83 Patented Sept. 24, 1963 whereby to permit mounting a second gripping handle on either side of the power tool it at approximately right angles to the first gripping handle 12 to facilitate gripping the polishing tool during operation thereof. The first handle 12 may include a trigger switch (not shown) for controlling theoperation of the electric motor.
The present invention is primarily concerned with the development of a new and novel liquid-polish dispensing handle 20 which is mountable on either side of the polishing tool iii in the openings formed in the housing 11. The polish dispensing handle 2d, which is best illustrated in F163. 2 and 3, includes a generally tubular member 21 of a length and breadth that can be firmly grasped in the hand with one end of the tubular member 21 having a plug member 22 brazed therein. A mounting stud 24 which projects from the outer end of the plug member 22 is secured in the plug member 22 by a lock washer 26 and a lock nut 28. The projecting end of the mounting stud 24 is adapted to be inserted through the opening in either side of the housing 11 of the polishing tool 10 after which a suitable lock nut 39 is adapted to be tightened on the inner end thereof whereby to rigidly mount the handle 26 on the polishing tool 10.
The opposite end of the tubular member 21 is externally threaded for receiving a removable cap 32. The cap 32 is provided with a sealing gasket 34 formed of plastic or other suitable material, which gasket 34 is adapted for sealing engagement with the end of the tubular member 21. With the cap 32 tightened on the open end of the tubular member 21, the handle 20 serves as a container or reservoir 35 for a supply of liquid polish. Preferably, the outer surface of the cap 32 is provided with a neoprene coating whereby when it is removed to refill the polish reservoir 35 the cap '32 may be set down on the surface being polished without any danger of scratching such surface.
Provision is made for readily dispensing the liquid polish contained in the reservoir 35 when and where needed including a pump assembly disposed within the reservoir 35 and indicated generally bythe reference numoral 36. The pump assembly 36 includes an irregular shaped housing characterized by a first tubular portion 37 disposed longitudinally in the reservoir 35 and a pair of spaced apart tubular portions 38 and 39 disposed substantially at right angles to the tubular portion 37 with the passages therein intersecting the passage in the tubular portion 37. The spaced apart tubular portions 38 and 39 are interconnected by a web 40. The pump assembly 36 is ri idly mounted within the tubular member 21 -by a pair of hollow adapter members 41 and 42, both ends of which are externally threaded, which extend, respectively, through bores 43 and 44- 'formed in a flattened wall portion 45 of the tubular member 21 and are tightened into internally threaded ends of the tubular housing portions 38 and 39, respectively, of the pump assembly 36.
One end of the tubular housing portion 37 of the pump assembly 36 is provided with an inlet tube 48 and the opposite end is closed by a plug 49. The inner end of the inlet tube 48 is normally closed by a ball check valve including a ball 51 and a spring 52. The passage in the tubular housing portion 38 defines a pump chamber in which a piston member 54 is movable. The piston 54 is movable in one direction by a plunger member 55 which projects outwardly through the hollow adapter member 41 for finger manipulation by a person grasping the handle 2% and is movable in the opposite direction by a spring 56 which normally urges the piston 54- toward the adapter member 41. The passage in the tubular housing portion 39 provides an outlet passage for the pump assembly 36 and is in communication with an external outlet tube '57 which is secured to the outer end of the hollow adapter enc aves member 52. A ball check valve including a ball 58 and a spring 59' normally closes the passage in the tubular housing portion 37 between the pump chamber in the tubular housing portion 33 and the outlet passage in the tubular housing portion 36.
The pump assembly 36 operates in a conventional manner as will now be described. Upon each inward stroke of the piston member 54, as a result of manipulation of the plunger 55, liquid polish in the pump chamber is forced past the ball check valve 58 and through the outlet passage in the tubular housing portion 39 into the outlet tube 57. During each return or outward stroke of the piston member 54 under the influence of the spring 56, liquid polish is drawn through the inlet tube 43 past the ball check valve 51 and into the pump chamber.
As shown in FIG. 2, a flexible sucker tube 62 is connected to the outer end of the inlet tube 48 with a weight member 63 being carried on the free end of the sucker tube 62 whereby to retain the end of the sucker tube immersed in the liquid polish in the reservoir 35. A nutlike member 65, which is disposed about the outer portion of the plunger 55, is threadedly engaged with the outer threaded portion of the 'hollow adapter member 41 whereby to retain a suitable gasket (not shown) in sealing engagement between the outer end of the adapter member 41 and the plunger 55 slidable therethrough.
In order that the liquid polish dispensed by the pump assembly 36 may be directed as desired onto the surface to be polished, a flexible spout 6% having a nozzle 69 on its outer end is secured to the outer end of the outlet tube 57. Preferably, the flexible spout 68 and the nozzle 69 are provided with a neoprene coating whereby to insure against any scratching of the surface being polished. As illustrated in FIG. 1, the length of the flexible spout 68 is such that the nozzle 69 extends substantially beyond 'the outer edge of the polishing pad or wool bonnet 16 whereby the polish is dispensed directly onto the surface to be polished rather than into the wool bonnet 16, thus preventing undesirable soaking of the wool bonnet. With this flexible spout arrangement, the operator of the polishing tool 10 may readily direct the dispensing of the liquid polish where needed on the surface to be polished.
With the polish dispensing handle 20 disclosed herein, any polishing operation can be completed with a substantial time saving as there is no delay for hand application of the polish. By combining a finger manipulable dispenser with a readily grippable handle of a hand operable polishing tool, the operator may control the application of the liquid polish when and where needed on the surface to be polished without releasing his grip on the polishing tool.
It will be understood that certain changes may be made in the construction or arrangement of the polish dispensing handle for a hand operable polishing tool disclosed herein without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as defined in the appended claims.
I claim:
1. In combination with a hand operable power tool of the type characterized by a first handle protecting from the rear end thereof and by a polishing pad asso ciated therewith, a polish dispensing handle comprising, a generally cylindrical hollow member of a length and breadth that can be firmly grasped in the hand of a person and which is adapted to contain a supply of liquid polish, means on one end of said hollow member for. detachably mounting the same to one side of said power tool in a position at a generally right angle .to said first handle wherein said hollow member serves as a readily grippable second handle during operation of the tool, and manually operable positive displacement pump means.

2. The combination according to claim 1 wherein a flexible spout is secured to the external end of said outlet tube, which flexible spout is adapted to extend to the outer edge of said polishing pad for dispensing liquid polish directly to the surface to be polished.
3. A polish dispensing handle for use with a hand V operable polishing tool having a polishing pad associated therewith, said handle comprising, a generally cylindrical hollow member of a length and breadth that can be a firmly grasped in a hand of a person and which is adapted to contain a supply of liquid polish, means on one end' of said hollow member for detachably mounting the same to the power tool in a position wherein said hollow. member serves as a readily grippable handle during operation of the. tool, and manually operable positive displacement pump means mounted in said handle member and including a manually depressible pump plunger pro jecting externally of said hollow member transversely thereto, a pump inlet conduit within said hollow member adapted to communicate with a supply of liquid polish therein, and an outlet tube projecting externally of said hollow member transversely thereto.
4. The polish dispensing handle according to claim 3 wherein said means on one end of said hollow member comprises a threaded stud extending co-axially from said hollow member.
5. The polish dispensing handle according to claim 3 wherein a flexible spout is secured to the external end of said outlet tube, which flexible spout is adapted to extend to the outer edge of said polishing pad for dis pensing liquid polish directly to the surface to be polished.

IN COMBINATION WITH A HAND OPERABLE POWER TOOL OF THE TYPE CHARACTERIZED BY A FIRST HANDLE PROJECTING FROM THE REAR END THEREOF AND BY A POLISHING PAD ASSOCIATED THEREWITH, A POLISH DISPENSING HANDLE COMPRISING, A GENERALLY CYLINDRICAL HOLLOW MEMBER OF A LENGTH AND BREATH THAT CAN BE FIRMLY GRASPED IN THE HAND OF A PERSON AND WHICH IS ADAPTED TO CONTAIN A SUPPLY OF LIQUID POLISH, MEANS ON ONE END OF SAID HOLLOW MEMBER FOR DETACHABLY MOUNTING THE SAME TO ONE SIDE OF SAID POWER TOOL IN A POSITION AT A GENERALLY RIGHT ANGLE TO SAID FIRST HANDLE WHEREIN SAID HOLLOW MEMBER SERVES AS A READILY GRIPPABLE SECOND HANDLE DURING OPERATION OF THE TOOL, AND MANUALLY OPERABLE POSITIVE DISPLACEMENT PUMP MEANS MOUNTED IN SAID HOLLOW MEMBER AND INCLUDING A MANUALLY DEPRESSIBLE PUMP PLUNGER PROJECTING EXTERNALLY OF
