- I employ a Manila or other paper of superior strength and quality, upon which I print, as in the manufacture of oil-cloths, the ground and figuring, and obtainv the rough-surfitced article which I have above referred to. I then pass this oil-printed paper a suificient number of times through calenderrolls until a smooth and even surface is obtained, which latter op. eration I have discovered may be performed without cracking or injuring the oil-surface or defacing the same.
Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OEEIoE.
T. SEYMOUR SCOTT, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN OIL-PRINTED PAPER FOR FLOORS.
Specifieationforming part of Letters Patent N 0. 216,109, dated June 3, 1879; application filed February 8, 1879.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that LT. SEYMOUR ScoTT, of
the city and county of Philadelphia, in the State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Oil-Printed Paper for Floors, Walls, and other purposes, of which 'the printed paper.
Heretofore in oil-printed papers the finished paper has had a rough or uneven surface, and this has resulted from the fact that in printing the same it has been found necessary to provide an air-interspace in the printing block or die back of the portion thereof which holds and applies the oil-mixture to form the figure, in order to prevent the lifting or removal of the oil-mixture from the paper when the die is removed therefrom, with the result that so large a quantity of printing-mixture is deposited on the paper as to produce an uneven surface.
The disadvantages of such uneven surface, especially where the same is subjected to great exposure of wear, are, that the surface becomes unevenly worn and defaced, and the utility and beauty of the article consequently in a great measure destroyed.
I have discovered that these objections can be obviated, and a smooth-faced oil-printed paper he produced in the following manner:
I employ a Manila or other paper of superior strength and quality, upon which I print, as in the manufacture of oil-cloths, the ground and figuring, and obtainv the rough-surfitced article which I have above referred to. I then pass this oil-printed paper a suificient number of times through calenderrolls until a smooth and even surface is obtained, which latter op. eration I have discovered may be performed without cracking or injuring the oil-surface or defacing the same.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States. is-
1. The herein-described process of producin g smooth-faced oil-printed paper, which 0011- sists in printing the paper and subsequently passing the printed paper through calenderrolls to smooth the surface, substantially as described.
2. As a new article of manufacture, smoothfaced oil-printed paper, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto signed my name this 25th day of September, A. D. 1878.
J. BoNsALL TAYLOR, W. O. STRAWBRIDGE.
