UNITED STATES PATENT OEEIoE.
THOMAS PITT, OF NEW ORLEANS, LOUISIANA, ASSIGNOR TO FANNY ELIZ- ABETH DE WOLF AND RAOHAEL MCBURNEY POWELL, OF QUEBEC,
CANADA IM PROVEMENT IN VALVES.
Specication forming part of Letters Patent N o. 216,104, dated J une 3, 1879; application tiled March 3, 1879.
To all whom it may concern: n
Be it known th at I, THOMAS PITT, a resident of the city of New Orleans, parish of Orleans, and State of Louisiana, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Valves; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and correct description of the same, reference being had to the `annexed drawings, making a part of this specification.
Figure l is a top view of the invention. Fig. 2 is a plan of the valve-seat or lower section of thedevice. Fig. 3 represents a side elevation; Fig. 4, a vert-ical section through the line .T a" and Fig. 5 a to) view of the valve proper.
This invention consists ot' a valveseat, A, upon which is screwed or otherwise fitted a cover, B, the latter provided with a circular opening, O, and stuiing-box I) for the reception of a valve'rod, E, the lower end of which is made square, so as to tit in a similarly-sl'laped socket in the center of a circular valve, F. The upper end of the valve-rod is furnished with a crank or wheel, whereby the valve is operated. i
In the top of the cover is constructed an opening, G, while the bottom or valve-seat is provided with three similarly-shaped openings, as at H I K. Pipe-butts are constructed on the outside of each of these openings, as at l fm u o, and the inner ends of the openings, as well as a vertical opening, p, in the valve, are of equal area, and at an equal distancefrom the center ofthe device, in order that by turning the valve its vertical opening p may be brought immediately in line `with any of the inlet 0r discharge openings.
The under side of the valve is provided with a groove, r, which is sunk to a depth of about one-half the valve. Its width equals that of the aforesaid openings, while its length is sut cient to cover at one time two of the same, thus permitting the flow through one to be directed into another whenever requisite.
A circular groove is cut in the cover, as at a, for the reception of a packing, whereby leakage around the same is eiectually prevented.
My invention may be termed with more eX- actness a tour-way valve or cock, inasmuch as the' valve is provided with two separate passages, communicating with four pipes, through any one of which the liquid, air, steam, or whatever agent employed is directed as required.
Having described mynven tion what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination of a valve-scat, A, having openings H I K, cover B, with openin g Gr, and valve F, with rod E, all constructed and arranged to/operate as described, and for the purpose specified.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto signed my name.
THOS. PITT. In presence of- J. (l. HUBBELL, I. J. FINNEY.
