Description
J. HOLDEN. Saw-Handle.
No. 216,091. Patented June 3,1879.
N EIEPo, PNDTO-LITHOGHAPHER. WASHINGTON. D I) UNITED STATES PATENT OEEIoE JOSEPH HOLDEN, OF MIDDLETOWN, NEW YORK.
IM PROVEMENT I N SA W-HANDLES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 216,091, dated June 3, 1879; application filed April 16, 1879.
- which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which forms a part of this specification, in which the figure represents a side elevation of a saw-handle and a portion of the saw, the said handle embodying my invention.
In the use of handsaws it is very often (lesirable to use both hands, and handles have been heretofore constructed for that purpose, and when used with a saw it is sometimes called a one-inans saw. These devices have been made such as a rest for the second hand, placed on the top of the saw-blade also, by constructing the handles with two separate openings, one for each hand, and by making one continuous circular opening large enough for both hands. In these devices, however, there are objections to having a separate piece to use, which may be lost or mislaid, and also objections to the handles heretofore in use where provision has been made for two hands, as an. excess of material must be used, or the cutting away of the same, it of the size of the ordinary handle, would weaken the handle.
To overcome these difficulties is the object of my invention, which I accomplish by leaving a rest for the hand on the upper forward part of the handle, and providing an opening for the thumb in the rear of the same, by which means the second hand can exert as much power in use, downward and forward, as the hand grasping the ordinary handle.
A represents the handle; B, the usual opening for the hand; 0, the saw, which is secured to the handle by the screw-bolts a a a a. 1) represents the rest on the top of the handle, in the rear of which is the circular or other con venient-shaped opening, E, for the thumb.
By this construction it will be seen that the thumb hasa bearin g to press forward, and if the fingers are over the rest D they can also exerta downward pressure. If desirable, the fingers may remain straight, resting upon the blade; but this is not advisable.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A hand-saw handle having the opening E,
with the top projection to extend over the thumb, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JOSEPH HOLDEN.
Witnesses WM. MILLSPAUGH, O. U. MADDEN.
