UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE KING D. DODGE, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
IMPROVEMENT IN IRON FENCES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 216,028, dated June 3, 1879; application filed November 19, 1878.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, KING DARIUS DODGE, of Chicago, county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in a Fence for Farm-Lands and Railway, Tracks, and other premises, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an improved iron fence, as hereinafter described, and more fully pointed out in the claim.
Heretofore such fences have been made of cast or malleable iron, with slots or holes cast in the post, greatly impairing their strength, and of such heft as to make them too expensive for common use.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a perspective view of a device embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal section of the same. Fig. 3 is an end elevation, and Fig. 4 is detailed view of the several parts.
The invention consists in the particular com bination of wrought-iron bars with thonged wires, jointly making an iron fence.
In the drawings, A represents a wroughtiron post; B and (3, wooden anchors; D, the guy-braces; E,the burrs; I, the slots; F, the hooks on the burrs; G, the thongs, and H the keys.
Post A is made of wrought-iron, vertically passing through wooden anchors B and C,
buried horizontally in the ground, with holes to receive and hold the post, wrought-iron guybraces D D D D D D, with hooks at the lower ends to hook into anchor B, and the upper ends with bends riveted into the cast-iron burrs E E E, holding the post firmly erect, increasing its strength in proportion to the power of tension in the guy-braces.
Cast-iron burrs E E E, with holes and slots L to receive the posts and keys, are keyed on the post with an iron key, H H H. Hooks F F F F F F hold the wires, with thongs G, on the burrs.
The post and guy-braces may be made of wrought-iron bars, of any shape, fromonefourth of an inch to two inches in diameter, and any desired length.
What I claim is I The combination, with the Wrought -iron post A, secured in position by the horizontal base or anchor platesB O, of the burrs E, keyed thereto, the guy-braces D, hooked to the upper base-plate and inserted in the burrs, as described, and the thonged fence-wires, retained in place by the hooks F upon the burrs, all as herein set forth.
K. D. DODGE. Witnesses:
LEWIS CURTs, ABNER Woon.
