The present invention relates to display boxes and enclosing cartons therefor.
It is an object of the invention to provide a display box construction such that upon removing its enclosing carton from the loaded disp-lay box, the display box assumes its display position, slanting upwardly toward the rear and with its bracing easel in bracing position.
Another object is to provide in connection with such a display box, an enclosing carton pro* vided with an easel covering flap such that when the means securing the display box in the carton is released, the easel covering flap of the carton will allow the display box easel, beginning with the first carton removing movement, to assume its display box supporting position.
A further object is to provide, in connection with the display box supporting easel, a movable display box back, which, by movement of the easel into display box supporting position, is caused to move upwardly within the box above the upper limit of the box load to bring into view, clear of the box load, a box back area that may be used for printed matter, such as advertising.
The invention consists in the features and constructions hereinafter described and claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, showing, by way of example, a preferred embodimen of the invention, and in which:
Figure 1 is a top plan view ofthe blank from which the display box is made;

The invention is illustrated inl connection with a box made from a single blank of the Ypreferred form, but of course is not limited to such construction.
, Referring in detail to the drawing, the blankshown in Figure 1 comprises a box back I I joined to which, in folding relation theretoalong the dotted line I3, is the easel back support I5. The
easel back support I5 has extending laterally (Cl. 20G- 44) from it,v along fold lines shown at I6, a pair of easel braces I8.
A fold line 2U separates from the easel back support I5 the easel bottom section 22 which has adjoining it and separated from it by the slotted fold line 23 the interiorly sliding box back 25 hereinafter more fully described.
Extending laterally from one side of the box back ll are a series of box back glue tabs 21, 28 and4 29.
Extending laterally from the other side of the box back I I is a box side section 32 provided with one or more interiorly projecting article supporting tabs 33. The box side 32 is separated from the box back II by a fold line 34 and is in turn separated by a fold line 35 from the box front section 31. This front section is essentially an article retaining and exhibiting section, as distinguished from an article covering section and for this purpose is largely cut away from the top downwardly as indicated in Figure 2. Joining the box front 31 in the cut-away area is an inside lower front section 34 and an inner bottom section 35.
.Adjoining the box front 31 but on the other side thereof and separated from it by the fold line 39 is the other box side 40, which is provided with interiorly projecting article supporting tabs 4I corresponding to and for cooperation with the article supporting tabs 33 of the box side 32.
Adjoining the lower portion of the box front 31 and separated from it by the fold line 45 is the box bottom section 41 having laterally extending from it in lfolding relation thereto a pair of side brace sections 49.

Separated from the box bottom section 41 by the fold line 52 is the bottom back flap 53, behind which slides the lower portion of the sliding back 25 when the loaded display box is being placed in display position. This operation, as hereinafter described, can be performed simply by removing from the loaded display box its enclosing or shipping carton. A
The portions of the blank of Figure 1 that are glued or similarly secured in the formed box as 45 it appears, for example, in Figure 2, comprise the box back securing tabs 21, 28 and 29, all of which are glued or similarly secured to the free vertical edge of the box side 40; and the bottom y side braces 4Q, which are glued or similarly secured 50 to the lower portions of the inside'faces of the box sides 32 and 40, if desired.
' In assembling the display box from the blank of Figure 1, the tabs 21, 28, 29 are bent downwardly at right angles and the side 32 with its joining 55 sections is similarly bent along the fold line 34. The box front 3l is then bent in the same direction along the fold line 35 and the box side 40 bent along the fold line 39 to bring it into position to contact with the box back securing tabs 21, 28 and 29, which are glued or similarly secured to the inside face of box side 4D. l
Along fold line 23 the sliding back section 25 is bent downwardly or away from the observer as viewed in Figure 1, and the easelI bottom section 22 is similarly bent and in the same direction along fold line 25. The easel back support I5, however, is bent in the opposite direction along fold line I3, that is, upwardly from the box back II as viewed in Figure 1. The easel braces I8 are bent downwardly at' right angles as viewed in Figure 1. Theslid'ing back may then be thrust upwardly through the open bottom of the box to lie along the interior face of the box back II and the easel back support, easel bottom, and easel braces I8 may be flat.- tened against the sliding back 25I to lie in the. same plane as the box back, II.
The bottom side braces 49 andV bottom back flap 53 may now be bent inwardly ofL the bottom section l and the bottom brought into position with the bottom side braces adjacent the. lower interior faces ofA the box sides to which they may, ii desired, be secured, for example, with glue, and the bottom back ap 53 lying against and in sliding relation with the sliding back 25.
The inside lower front 34. is then bent through- 180 to lie along the inside face of the box front 3l, which brings the inner box bottom 35 into contact with the outside box bottom d1. The. article supporting tabs 33V and 4I have been previously bent so that they will extend toward each other interiorly of the box.
Referring now more particularly to Figures 6 and 7, an enclosing carton 6I is provided' for the display box and has the general overall. shape of the display box. The enclosing cartonV 6I is closed at top, bottom, both sides and one end 63.
Owing to the fact that one of the features of the invention includes the slanting backward of the display box when in display position, Vwith the bottom of the display box in alignment with the easel bottom 22, the display box bottom is. not in. a plane at right angles to its front and back, but is at an angle thereto, as shownr in the drawing.
For this reason, there may be included in the. invention as. a whole a ller member 65j of the same material as the carton and having two adjoining sides 5S and El' at right; angles to eachY other and two faces 69 and 'It in alinement with each other and lying againstV the outer face of the display box bottom as shown in Figure o",r the two ends 'I2 and 13 of the ller member being bent into contact with each other and extending into abutment with thefold linev sepa,- rating the right angularly adjoining sides` 66' and 5l of the ller member. This may be made by folding a ller sheet, discarded' when` the carton. is removed.
This produces a substantially rigid ller whose side 65 forms an end closure for the enclosing; cartonV 6 I.
Near its endopening, one face oi the cartonol, namely the face to bein contact with the display box back, is provided with. a hinged `ap 'l5 whose side edgesf 'I6A and 'Il are cut out of the carton face and which` is joined to the carton face by a` fold line 19;
A piece of'gurnmed paper 8f! is secured to the gicasev enclosing carton ap 'I5 and passes across the side 66 of ller 65 closing the open end of the carton and has its other end fastened to the opposite carton face as shown in Figures 7 and 6.
When the enclosing carton is to be opened and the loaded display box set up in display position, the gummed paper tab is broken, the filler 65 removed, and the enclosing carton set upright with the top of the loaded display box uppermost, and the open carton end supported on any suitable horizontal surface. With the filler 65 removed, the enclosing carton BI may now be lifted straight upwardly with the result thatl the forward lower or front bottom edge of the display box and the fold line 23 separating theH sliding back 255 from the easel bottom 22 Contact with the supporting surface. The result is. that, due. to the weight of the display carton itself, and especially when it is loaded, there; is: a. tendency for the display box to assumeits display position, the box back II sliding downwardly with. respect to. the back portion `25, whose bottom edge rests, against the horizontal support, this movement of the display box forcing outwardly toward the rear the fold line 20 between the. easel back support Vl5 and the easel bottom 22 until the outside lower face of the display box bottom contacts the horizontal supporting surface, at which moment it. is in alignment with the easel bottom 22 which contacts with the horizontal supporting surface at the; same time. Thus by the time the enclosing carton has been removed from theV display box, the display box has assumed itsV display posiitsmovement in assuming this position comniencingas soonas the carton removing motion is' commenced, the carton ap 1.5 swinging outwardly along its hinge line 'I9 as it is pressed outwardly bythe easel back support I5.
Also duringA the carton removing movement, which causes the starting and completion of the playbox movement which results in its assumptionof its display box position, the relative movement between the box back II and the vsliding back 25-` brings the upper portion of the sliding back 25 upwardly beyond the upper edge of the box backV Il and consequently up abovev the topmost' face' offl the display box load, thereby bringing into viewaboveV the display box load, such advertisingor other printed matter` as the upper portion of the slidingback 25 may carry.

What is claimed is:
1. A package comprising a tilting display box, an enclosing carton and releasable means for holding the box in the carton, said box having a slanting bottom, said enclosing carton having an open bottom when the box holding means is released and movable upwardly off the box to leave it free of the carton in an upright position of unstable equilibrium, and said box having at its back a supporting device movable into box supporting position by the box Weight when the box, released from its carton, seeks a position of stable equilibrium, said supporting device including an easel member having a back support and a bottom section in hinged relation therewith, a sliding member associated with the box back and movable below the box bottom, said bottom section being hingedly attached thereto.
2. A package comprising a tilting display box, an enclosing carton and releasable means for holding the box in the carton, said box having a slanting bottom, said enclosing carton having an open bottom whe-n the box holding means is released and movable upwardly ofi the box to leave it free of the carton in an upright position of unstable equilibrium, said box having at its back a supporting device movable into box supporting position by the box weight when the box, released from its carton, seeks a position of stable equilibrium, and said enclosing carton having a hinged portion overlying said supporting device and movable outwardly thereby when the carton, while being withdrawn, allows the box to commence its movement into tilted display position of stable equilibrium.

A package comprising a tilting disp-lay box, an enclosing carton and releasable means for holding the box in the carton, said box having a slanting bottom, said enclosing carton having an open bottom when the box holding means is released and movable upwardly off the box to leave it free of the carton in an upright position of unstable equilibrium, said box having at its back a supporting device movable into boxv supporting position by the box weight when the box, released from its carton, seeks a position of stable equilibrium, said enclosing carton having a hinged portion overlying said supporting device and movable outwardly thereby` when the carton, while being withdrawn, allows the box to commence its movement into tilted display position of stable equilibrium, and a separate ller member closing the open carton end releasable therefrom by said releasable means.

A package comprising a tilting display box, an enclosing carton, and releasable means for holding the box in the carton, said box having a slanting bottom, said enclosing carton having an open bottom when the box holding means is release-d and being movable upwardly off the box to leave it free of the carton in a substantially upright position of unstable equilibrium, and said box having a sliding back and a supporting device associated therewith movable into box supporting position by the box weight when the box, released irorn its carton, seeks a position of stable equilibrium, said supporting device, by such movement causing said back to slide upwardly of the box.

A package comprising a tilting display box, an enclosing carton, and releasable means for holding the box in the carton, said box having a slanting bottom, said enclosing carton having an open bottom when the box holding means isl released and being movable upwardly oi the box to leave it free of the carton in a substantially upright position of unstable equilibrium, and said box having a sliding back and a supporting easel having a bottom section and a p-ropping section associated therewith movable into box supporting position by the box weight when the box, released from its carton, seeks a position of stable equilibrium, said supporting easel, by such movemeent causing said back to sli-de upwardly of the box and bring the slanting bottom oi the box and the easel bottom section into horizontal alignment.

A tilting display box having a slanting bottom and having a sliding back and, associated therewith, a supporting device including an easel member having a back support hinged to the box, and a bottom sectiony hinged to said back support and hinged to said sliding back, said back support and bottom section being movable to substantially hat position with respect to the back of the box, with said bottom section extending below the adjacent back edge of the box bottom, said bottom section being actuatedby the box weight, when the box is placed upright, to force the back support away from the box back into box supporting position and thereby slide said back upwardly of the box.

A tilting display box having a slanting bottom and having a sliding back and, associated therewith, a supporting device including an easel member having a back support hinged to the box, and a bottom section hinged to said back support and hinged to said sliding back, said back support and bottom section being movable to substantially flat position with respect to the back of the box, with said bottom section extending below the adjacent back edge of the box bottom, said bottom section and said slanting bottom being brought into alignment by the box weight, when the box is placed upright, to force the said support away from the box back into box supporting position, and thereby slide said back upwardly of the box.

A tilting display box having a slanting back and a bottom and having a self setting easel device moved into box supporting position by the box weight, said easel device comprising a supporting member attached to the box back and provided with a base portion inv hinged relation therewith and movably attached to the box and having an edge movable from a shipping position below the box bottom into supporting position in the plane of the box bottom.

A tilting display box having a slanting back and a bottom and having a self'setting easel device moved into box supporting position by the box weight, said easel device comprising a supporting member attached to the box back and provided with a base portion in hinged relation therewith and movably attached to the box and having an edge movable from a shipping position below the box bottom into supporting position in the plane of the box bottom, said display box and easel device being made from a single blank and being oldable flat for packing.
10. A tilting display box having a slanting back and a bottom and having a self setting easel device moved into box supporting position by the box weight, said easel device comprising a supporting member attached to the box back and provided with a base portion in hinged relation therewith and movably attached to the box and having an edge movable from a shipping position below the box biottom into supporting position in the plane ofthe box bottom, said easel device being foldable against the box for shipping.V

A tilting display box having a slanting back anda bottom and having a self setting easel device moved into box supporting position by the box Weight,`said easel device comprising a supporting member attached to the box back and provided with a base portion in hinged relation therewith and movably attached to the box and having an edge movable from a shipping position below the box bottom into supporting position in the plane of the box bottom, said easel device having foldable stiffening flanges.

A tilting display box having a slanting back and a bottom and having a self setting easel device moved into box supporting position by the box Weight, said easel device comprising a supporting member attached to the box back and provided with a base portion in hinged relation therewith and movably attached to the box and having an edge movable from a shipping position below the boxbottom into supportingv position in; the plane of the box bottom, said box having articleV supports extending toward each other from opposite box side Walls, and the display box and easel Ydevice being made from a single blank and foldable flat for packing.
13. A tilting display box having a self-setting easel movable by the box weight into box supporting position from a shipping position substantially flat against the box, said box having a bottom and a Slanting sliding back, and said self -setting easel including a backsupport hinged to the box, and av bottom section hinged to said back support and hingedly associated with said slanting sliding box back, said bottom section in shipping position extending below the box bottom, and being movable by the box Weight into alignment with the box bottom,Y thereby shifting said back support into box supporting position and said slanting sliding back into display position.
