' My invention relates to novel structural members. and more particularly, relates to collapsible containers and novel closing means therefor.
This application is a division of S. N. 693,841 5 covering Containers and parts therefor, filed Oct. 16, 1933, in which is claimed certain structural features relating to collapsible containers, and which is a continuation in part of S. N. 631,682
filed September 3, 1932.
Heretofore, in providing a back wall for a casing it has been necessary to provide full flaps and secure these by tab means or the like. These are inefflcacious, diflicult to properly form and do not provide a strong rear wall.
member and suitably securing it in accordance with my invention, I obtain a strong, secure backing for the casing. I have found that a better casing is formed when an ordinary tube is first 20 formed to produce 'the four side walls of the casing and a separate backing is provided.
Accordingly, objects of my invention are to provide a novel construction for a casing backing to provide for forming a shell or casing from a 5 tube and to provide a separable member for a casing backing.
There are other objectsof my invention which together with the foregoing will appear in the detailed description following in connection with 30 the drawings in which:
Figure 1- is a developed view of one form of blank to be folded to form a rear wall for a casing.
Figure 2 is a perspective view showing the blank of Figure 1 folded to form a rear wall for a casing.
Figure 3 is a developed view of a modified form of blank in which metallic reinforcements are provided on the blank.
Figure 4 is a perspective view showing the blank of Figure 3 partly folded from a rear wall .for a casing.
Figure 5 is a perspective view showing the rear end of a casing adapted to receive a rear wall member as shown in Figures 2 and 4.

I have discovered that by employing a separate wall of Figure 4 inserted'into the casing rear end application February Figure 11 is a perspective view showing the rear end of a casing to which is applied the rear wall of Figure 8 and the metallic members of Figures 9 and 10.
Figure 12 is a cross section along the lines I 2-l2 of Figure 11.
Figure 13 is a perspective view of the rear end of a casing showing the rear wall of Figure 3 and a modified form-of fastening means on the rear end of the casing.
In Figure 1 a simple blank I isprovided with flaps 2 and 3 scored at 4 and 5, and a further set of flaps 6 and 1 having scores 8, 9, l0 and H. When assembled this blank is in the form of a tray shown in Figure 2 with the extensions and I3 turned outwardlyas shown. In mounting this backing into the casings, the extension flaps l2 and I3 are arranged to overlap the side walls It and I shown in Figure 5.
Secured as by rivets or other suitable means as by prongs 16 to the other two side walls I6 and H are the metallic members I 8 and 19 (Figure 5). Members 18 and I! may be perforated or otherwise provided with a differential resistance to torsional strain as shown in my copending application S. N. 693,841 hereinbefore referred to and of which the present application is a division. The 1 may be bent inwardly engaging the sides 2 and 3 of the backing as shown in Figure 6. Members I8 and I9 thus lock the backing into place by prcventing it from falling out of the casing and the flanged extensions 12 and 13 in engagement with the sides of the casing hold the backing from moving into the casing too far. This principle of providing a backing-may be aplied not only to casings, but to any container or. similar device for securing a removable member thereto.
In Figure 3, I have shown a modified form of -my rear end member. In this modification, the blank, is similar to that shown in Figure 1 .except the flap extensions l2 and I3 of Figure 1 are omitted, the blank terminating at what are shown as score lines I0 and II of Figure 1. As shown in Figure 3,- the flaps extensions l2- and I3 are replaced by the metallic channel shaped members 24 and 25 which are secured to the flaps l and 8 respectively by any suitable means as for instance by the prongs 26. Each of metallic channel members and 25 is so secured to its respective flap as to provide the outstanding flange 21 adapted to enclose the open edges of the walls H and IS in the manner as described in connection with the fianges l2 and 13 of Figure 2. 'I'he manner in which the flanges 21 engage the edge of the tube wall I is clearly shown'in Figure 6.
In Figure '7, I have also shown a blank for a rear wall member similar to that of Figure 1 except that the flaps I2 and I3 of Figure 1 are omitted, the blank terminating at what are shown as score lines I0 and II of Figure 1. The blank of Figure 7 is thus similar to the blank of Figure 3 prior to the application of the metallic channels 24 and 25. This blank of Figure '7 when assembled assumes a form of a simple tray as shown in Figure 8, and may be held in place by friction, or may be secured by other means such as I will now describe.
In Figure 9 is shown a member 28, provided with a protruding seat or shelf 29. Members 28 are secured to the side walls of the tube in any suitable manner as for instance by. the prongs 30; and are attached in a manner that the lines of differential resistance to torsional strain 3| are provided along the edge of the casing so that the extensions 32 may be bent inwardly engaging the sides 2, 3, 6, and I of the backing as shown in Figure 11, members 28 may be of any suitable kind as for instance those disclosed in my copending applice tion S. N. 693,841 previously referred to. The members 28, secured to the sides of the casing form seats 29 for the tray-formed backing to limit its movement into the casing and the protruding ends 32 of the members 28 then overlap the edges of the tray like backing to hold it into the casing as shown in Figures 11 and 12.
It will be understood that the principle of my backing may embody numerous other forms. Thus, I may use flanges 2, 3, 6 and 1 on all four sides, the friction between the walls aiding to hold the tray in place.
In a preferred form, I use metal members 24 and 25 as shown in Figure 3, and corresponding metal members 33 and 34 secured to the outside of the casing wall and overlapping the remaining two sides of the tray as shown in Figure 13. In that case, the vertical m'etal members 33 and 34 form posts between the horizontal metal members .24 and 25 as described in connection with the front of a casing in my copending application S. N. 693,841 and S. N. 631,682 hereinbefore referred to.
I have found that to be effective the tray must be made of heavy material. This makes proper scoring and bending therealong rather difilcult. I have discovered that I can use relatively thin material making the bending and scoring easy and then by mounting a relatively heavy piece of material in the bottom of the tray held there by friction, the necessary strength is obtained.
The tray may then be shipped collapsed with the- The bending lines on the heavy main piece separate. In that case, I prefer to treat my tray with a suitable stiffening material such as sulphur treatment, taking care,
however, to leave the scored edges untreated.
Although in illustrating my invention, I have shown certain applications thereof, it will be obvious that there are many other uses, that the parts may be modified without departing from the spirit of my invention. Accordingly, I do not wish to be limited by this description, but only by the appended claims.
I claim:
1. In a casing tube having walls, an inset member comprising a wall and adjacent flaps extending therefrom and bendable on score lines to form a tray-like structure with said wall; a metallic member on at least one of said flaps extending in the same plane as said flap and beyond the edge thereof, said metallic member being bendable for engaging a wall of said casing and preventing inward movement of said inset meinber into said casing; and means on at least one of the walls of the casing for engaging a flap of said inset members and preventing outward movement thereof away from the casing; said casing and inset member being adapted to be shipped fiat.
2. In a casing tube having walls; an inset member comprising a wall and adjacent flaps extending therefrom and bendable on score lines to form a tray-like structure with said wall; a metallic member on at least one of the walls of the casing said member extending in the same plane as said wall and beyond the edge thereof said metallic member being bendable for engaging a flap of said insetmember-and preventing outward movement thereof away from the casing; and means on at least one of said flaps for engaging a wall of said casing and preventing inward movement of said inset member into said casing; said casing and inset member being adapted to be shipped fiat.
3. In a casing tube having walls, a flat metallic member on at least one of said walls, said member extending in the same plane as said wall and and beyond the. edge thereof; an inset member comprising a wall member and adjacent flaps, a fiat metallic member on at least one of said flaps extending in the same plane as said flap and beyond the edge thereof; said metallic member on said wall and flap being bendable; said metallic member on the wall of the casing being adapted to bend over and engage a flap on said inset wall; said metallic member on said flap being adapted to bend over and engage a wall on said casing; said casing and inset member being adapted to be shipped flat.
