UNITED STATES PATENT O FIc CHARLES H. COLBURN, OF MILFORD, MASSACHUSETTS.
IMPROVEMENT IN BOOTS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 215,794, dated May 27, 1879 application filed January 6, 1879.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that l, CHARLES H. COLBURN, of Milford, county of W'orcester, State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in Boots, of which the following description, in
connection with the accompanying drawing, is a specification.
This invention relates to boots having high or fancy tops, used chiefly for riding-boots; and the invention consists in a boot as an improved article of manufacture, it'being' pro vided with a high top, composed chiefly of leather-board or other equivalent stiff board, covered, as hereinafter described, with leather or cloth, thereby making the top stiffer than ordinary leather, at a less cost.
The drawing represents, in side elevation, a high-top boot constructed in accordance with my invention, the top being broken out to show the different material of which it is composed.
The sole a and front and back parts, I) c, of the boot are and may be of any usual material and shape.
The upper or top part of the boot, which it is desired to make very stiff, so that it will not bend down when walking or riding, is made of a piece of leather-board, (Z, or equivalent board, which is bent into tubular form, when its ends, preferably skived, are united together by paste, or nails, or stitches. This lapped part of the leather-board will be placed directly at the back of the leg, where any scam in the top will be least felt.
This leather-board top is shown as covered at its inner side with thin leather 0, preferably pasted to d; and about the leather-board top, from its upper to its lower end, is placed a piece of ornamental or fancy leather or cloth, f, stitched or united to form a tube.
The high-top part is united with the main leg parts of the front and back, I) c, by means of a series of sewing-machine stitches, 00; or it may be screw-rivets or nails, as at 3. These tops may be covered outside with white or other easily soiled or blacked leather or silk, and being made separate, with straps g attached, they may be attached to the boot parts I) c after they are sewed together at h, and the sole and heel are applied, finished, and burnished; for to apply the high top it is only necessary to place it outside of the upper end of the leg part of b c and sew it on by stitches.
I do not herein broadly claim a high-to boot having a leg with side seams, h, and a stiff top connected with the same, as herein shown and described, for such a boot forms the subject-matter of another application for patent, filed December 4, 1876.
I claim- As an improved article of manufacture, a boot provided with a high top composed of leather-board or equivalent board, and an external covering, f, united to the boot-leg c b, substantially as and for the purpose described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
CHARLES H. COLBURN.
W'itnesses G. W. GREGORY, L. F. CONNOR.
