I FUEL FEEDING 'DEVICE FOR INTERNAL COHBUSTION ENGINES original Filed sept. 4, 1957 2 sheets-smet 2 byW4 Attorney Patented May a, 1939' I UNITED STATES 2,157,285 FUEL FEEDIN'G DEVICE FOR INTERNAL COMBUSTION ENGINES- Fritz Egersdrfer, Berlin, Germany oil-mm1 application vstptemlmr 4, 1931, sensi No. 162,430. Divided and this application May 18, 1938, Serial No. 208,618. In' Germany Septembcr 26, 1932 l Claim. (Cl. 103-2) casing and having suction and premura conduits located respectively at opposite sides of the line of engagement of the said gear wheels, the
pressure conduit of the said pump being con-' nected with a distributing device taking part in the rotary movementof the said gear wheels and having ports for supplying the fuel to the cylinders of the engine. The object of the improve ments is to provide a fuel feeding device of this type which is simple in construction, and which ,o requires little space, and with this object in view my invention consists in providing the ports of the said distributing device respectively in the shaft carrying one of the said gear wheels and in one of thebushings providing bearings for the said shaft.
For the purpose of explaining the invention an respectively on `the lines 3-3 and 4-4 of Fig. 1.
In the example shown in the gures the feeding device comprisesfa casing composed of a' o cylinder I and heads 2 and 3, and a pair of interengaging gear wheels 4 and 5. 'I'he gea.;` wheel 4 is fixed to a driving shaft 5, and the gear wheel 5 is rotatably mounted on a bushing 43 carried by a shaft l. The' driving shaft 8 is rotatably mounted in bushings 8 and 9 tted within the cylinder I, and the shaft 1 is mounted in bushings I0 and I I. At opposite sides of the-line of intersection of the gear wheels 4 and 5 suction and pressure conduits I2 and I3 are provided in the wall of the cylinder I, and the suction conduit* I2 5 is connected with a supply of fuel.
The bushing I I is shorter in length-than the.,-
bushing I0. and the gear wheel 5 is shiftable within the casing in axial direction for varying u the amount of fuel fed by the pump. For thus shifting the gear wheel`5 in axial direction a lever 3l is provided which is jointed to the shaft 1 and connected with a governor or a hand operated controlling device such as the accelerator. When the shaft 1, the bushings I0 and I I and the 5 gear wheel 5 are shifted to the right a reduced portion of the length of the gear wheels is operative so that the amount of fuel fed by the gear wheels is reduced.
'I'he shaft 'I is fixed to the bushings I0 and I'I 10 respectively by screw threads 41 and a key 48, and the bushing 43 provides a spacing member for the bushings I0 and II. v'
The driving shaft 5 is provldedwith an axial socket which is connected through a radial l5 bore 36 with a circumferential slot 31 made in the shaft, and the said slot cooperates with radial bores 38 made in the bushing 3 and ending at their inner ends in circumferential slots 55. The said radial `bores communicate with bores made in the/ cylinder I and ending in screw threaded sockets 40 adapted to have pipes connected thereto through which the fuel is supplied to the cylinders of the engine. In the head 2 a passage 4I is made which establishes connection u between the socket 35 and a socket 42 made in the cylinder andv commenting with the pressure conduit I3, a spring pressed valve 44 being pro vided for reventing back iiow of the fuel into the pressure conduit. 3o
'I'he operation of the device is as follows: The fuel supplied by the gear wheels to the pressure conduit I3 iiows through the socket 42, and it is delivered therefrom through the bore 35 into the bores 39 and to the pipes connected with the 35 cylinders. The amount of fuel is regulated by shifting the shaft l, the bushings I0, II, and the gear wheel 5to the right and it depends on the le'ngths of the slots 31 and 55. The lengths of the said slots are such that the fuel is delivered o to the successive cylinders during the desired injection period, and so that the slot 31 is temporarily closed as against successive slots 55 when it leaves one slot 55 and before it registers with the next one, so that successive passages 38 are s never connected with each other through the slot 3l. 'I'he excess of fuel escapes from the passage I3 through a bore 50, a passage 53 including a spring pressed valve 5I and a bore 54 to the suction conduit I2.
I claim:
In a fuel feeding device .for internal combustion engines, the combination with a casing, a pair of interengaging gear wheels within said casing. said casing being provided at opposite u ameter at the part carrying the said gear wheel and at the part mounted in said bushing, the
part of said shaft mounted in said bushing and the bushing providing a bearing therefor being provided with cooperating distributing passages communicating respectively with said pressure chamber and with saiddelivery passages.
FRrrz EGERSDRI'ER.
