Abstract

1335828 Regulating PERKINS ENGINES Ltd 19 April 1971 [13 Feb 1970] 7011/70 Heading F1B [Also in Division B7] A motor vehicle power unit and transmission comprises an I.C. engine(20), Fig.3 (not shown), change speed gears (29) incorporating gearratio selection mechanism (30) and fuelling control means (35) operative in response to the selection of an intermediate gear ratio so as to adjust a variable delivery fuelling device (27) to be capable of delivering a predetermined increased maximum quantity of fuel. The fuel control means consists of a sensor (33) on the gear box (29) connected to an actuator unit (35) operable to vary the maximum output of the fuel pump (27) supplying metered fuel to injectors (28). Movement of the gear lever 30 Fig.4 into intermediate gears ratios closes micro-switches 36, 38 Fig.4 which energize solenoids S2, S4 to move plates 41, 42 into the path of the fuel pump control rod 43. The plates 41, 42 are engaged by rod 43 and move together until stopped by a fixed abutment (not shown). The different thicknesses at TN, T4 are variously combined to permit an increased maximum movement of rod 43. In another embodiment fuel is pumped through a metering valve R51, Fig.5 by a transfer pump R52 to be fed to injectors 54 by a rotary distributer including plungers R56 engaging a cam R57. Two position spring-loaded valves 64.65, each incorporating a flow restrictor, are associated with the intermediate gear ratios and each normally connects the fuel metering conduit to a sump. Hydraulic selection of an intermediate gear ratio causes operation of the respective valve thereby reducing the fuel flowing to the sump and increasing the supply to the fuel injectors. In a modification the gear ratio selection is by pressure switches (67), Fig.6 (not shown) which are electrically connected to a logic unit (68) which permits an appropriate escape flow of fuel from the fuel metering conduit, the fuel control characteristics being modified by the gear ratio in use in a twospaced rear axle (69).
