(01. tic- 56) This invention relates to the manufacture of rolled articles having variable cross section along their length andhas for its object a roll mill in which one at least of the rolls providing the roll pass is mounted to move in guides of the mill stands and is under the control of means which alter the spacingbetween the operative rolls in accordancewith a predetermined desired rule.
More particularly the present invention includes a roll mill .in which the movable roll is moved by the cooperation of knee members or supports whose knee hinge is actuated by the control means intended to modify the spacing intermediate the rolls.
Two embodimentsof this invention are illustrated by way of example on the annexed drawings and Fig. 1 is a front view, with parts in section, of a roll mill for the manufacture of section articles having a variable cross section;

In the embodiment of Figs. 1 and 2, I denotes a frame base'on which two vertical stands orhousings 2 of the kind conventional in roll mills are fastened; 3 and 4 denote two mill rolls which are driven to-rotate' in unison with each other.
' In the illustrated construction the drive is made by means of floating shafts 24 and 25 and intermeshing pinions 26 and 21 driven by a main shaft 28.
The roll 3 is mounted in the stands 2 by bearing blocks 5 vertically adjustable in the stands 2 by means of screws 6 screw engaged in screwthreaded holes of the top cross portion of the respective stand 2 and adapted to be manipulated by means not shown.
The roll 4 is mounted in bearings I which in turn are arranged to reciprocate in slots 28o! stands 2; each of said bearings I is supported on the bottom surface of the stand slot by means of a knee stay consisting. of two plates 8. I whose remote edges abut on fulcrum members 8, 9' cooperating with bearing 1 and a pad 38 of stand 2, while their adjacent opposite edges engage an intermediate pivot bar IO.
A roller ii is rotatable on the plvotbar ill of Each of said pivot bars J0 is provided with a 6 device adapted toadjustably restrict the possible motion of said bar in one direction; in Fig.v 1 such a device is shown in detail in respect of one of said bars 10 and it consists of a rod 12 freely passing through a collar i3 fastened on an upright of the stand 2; said rod l2 includes a collar i2 embracing a pivot pin I 0' of the'cooperating bar Hi and has a screwthreaded portion on which a bail shaped nut i5 is screwed; said nut I5 has a hand wheel l4 integral therewith and is adapted to abut on a cooperating seat ii of the collar II when a pull is to be developed on. the bar Ill on which plates 8, 8' are hinged, said hinge bar I! usually lying inwardly with respect to the line Joining the centres of fulcrum rods 9, 9' that is on the opposite side of collar I! with respect to said line.
In the space intermediate the two knee stays- 8, '8' a support II is fastened on the frame base I and a shaft is is journalled thereon; a pinion is (Fig.- 2) is solid 'wlth shaft [8 and in'mesh with a pinion 20 faston a shaft 2| which is driven by the main driving pinion 21 by the intermediary of a change speed gear of any known or approved construction shown diagrammatically at 30 and including a manipulating handle 3| adapted to be engaged in either of the notches of a ratchet 30' to set said gear for drive under any of a number of predetermined .transmission ratios. 7
Two cams 22. 22' are fast on the shaft l8 and each of them has its rim in conditions for cooperation with one of said rollers ii of the knee stay 8. 8' of one side.
The respective positions of the two knee stays 8, 8' and respective rollers ii and of the cams 22, 22' are such as the cams 22, 22' in their respective angular positions act on the cooperating parts ll, l0, 8, 8', 9, I to hold the roll 4 in the particular position it must have to cause the article acted on between rolls 3 and 4 to take the dedetermined rule and the desired variations in the cross sectionbf the article'in course of rolling may be secured by'imparting a proper speed to rolls 3 and 4 and to shaft It.
By means of cams 22, 22- having the shape illustrated in Fig. 1 and by imparting to the shaft l8 9. continuous rotary motion in a given ratio with respect to the speed of rolls land 4, a rolled member having a progressively decreasing height of the kind shown in Fig. 5 and adapted for use in aircraft structures may be secured at each revolution of shaft l8,
A number of other desired shapes of rolled articles as bars having enlargements located at even intervals of the kind shown in Fig. 6 and proper for use as spars having means for attachment of other parts, may be secured by properly changdifferent conditions of operation by means of ing the operative conditions and the control cams because the bottom roll 4 of the roll mill bears on the cams 22, 22' by the intermediary of knee stays 8, 8' and rollers II, and therefore the position of said roll 4 depends at any time on the radius of the cam portion which at such time is in contact with rollers H.
The described roll mill may also be adapted for cams 22, 22' having difierent contours and by properly adapting the speed of. shaft [8 and the spee of rolls 3 and 4.
When it is desired to substitute new cams as 22, 22' for those existing on the shaft 18, the knee stays 8, B must be locked and for such a purpose the hand wheels I4, l5 are screwed on the cooperating rod 52 until they bear on the cooperating collar I3; thereafter the operation of further screwing the hand wheels l4, IS on said rods i2 provides for extending the knee stays 8, 8'
as desired to obtain such a space intermediate the rollers H as necessary for removing cams 22, 22' from shaft l8 and locating other cams thereon.
By making the knee stays 8, 8' stationary by means of parts l2, M if desired in their extended position, the axis of roll 4 may be caused to be stationary and then the roll mill may operate as an ordinary one. 7
Figures 3 and 4 illustrate a construction similar to the described one in which the cams 22, 22. are arranged at the outside with respect to roll mill stands 2 instead than in the space intermediate them;
In this construction each knee stay is deflected outwardly and the rollers H loose on the pivot rods intermediate the knee plates 8, 8' engage the rims of cams as 22, 22' fast onshafts iii, l8 rotatably supported in brackets 23 and driven by a shaft 20 by means of pinions i9, 20 fast respectively on said shafts l8 and 2|.
The operation is the same as above described v and similar results are obtained.' What 1 claim as my invention and desire to secure by United States Letters Patent is:-
1. A roll mill for rolling articles having variable cross section along their extent comprising stands, a roll mounted for revolution about a normally stationary roll, hearings for rotatably supporting said second roll, said bearings being movable in said stands for variable spacing intermediate said first and second rolls, toggle means supporting said bearings, cam means cooperating with said toggle means for their actuation and means for driving said rolls and said cam members.
2. A roll mill for rolling articles having variable cross section along their extent comprising stands, a roll mounted for revolution about a normally stationary axis in said stands, asecondroll, bearings for rotatably supporting said second roll, said bearings being movable in said stands for variable spacing intermediate said first and second rolls, toggle means supporting said bearings, each of said toggle means being articulated to move around axes located in planes perpendicular to the axis of said second roll, cam means cooperating with said toggle means for their actuation and means for driving said rolls and said cam members.
3. A roll mill for rolling articles having vari-' able cross section along their extent comprising stands, a roll mounted for revolution about a normally stationary axis in said stands, a second roll, bearings for rotatably supporting said second roll, said bearings being movable in said stands for variable spacing intermediate said first and second rolls, means for supporting said bearactuation, and means for driving said rolls and said cam members. i
4. A roll mill for rolling articles having variable cross section along their extent comprising stands, a. roll mounted for revolution about a normally stationary axis in said stands, a second roll, bearings for rotatably supporting said second roll, said bearings being movable in said stands for variable spacing intermediate said first and second rolls, means for supporting said nearings each of said supporting means comprising a member abutting on said stand and a member abutting on said bearing and a hinge for articulating together said members, said hinge having its axis located in a plane perpendicular to the axis of said second roll, a shaft intermediate said stands and respective supporting means, cam means fast on said shaft and cooperating with said articulated supporting means for their actuation and means for driving said rolls and said cam members.
5. A roll mill for rolling articles having variable cross section along their extent comprising stands, a roll mounted for revolution about a normally stationary axis in said stands, a second roll, bearings for rotatably supporting said second roll, said bearings being movable in said stands for variable spacing intermediate said first and second rolls, means for supporting said bearings each of said supporting means comprising a'member abutting on said stand and a member abutting on said bearing and a hinge for articulating together said members, said hinge having its axis located in a plane perpendicular to the axis of said second roll, a shaft in said stands, a second of said articulated supporting means and means for driving said rolls and said cam members.
6. A roll mill for rolling articles having variable cross section along their extent comprising stands, a roll mounted for revolution about a normally stationary axis in said stands, a second roll, bearings for rotatably supporting said second roll, said bearings being movable in said stands for variable spacing intermediate said first and second rolls, means for supporting said bearings each of said supporting means comprising a member abutting on said stand and a member abutting on said bearing and a hinge for articulating, together said members, said hinge having its axis located in a plane perpendicular to the axis of said second roll, a shaft adjacent to each of said stands on the side thereof opposed to said rolls, acam member on each of said shafts andcooperating with said hinge of said articulated supporting means of the adjacent stand, a main shaft actuating said shafts in unison and means for driving said rolls and said cam members.

A roll mill for rolling articles having variable cross section along their extent comprising stands, a roll mounted for revolution about a normally stationary axis in said stands, a second roll, bearings for rotatably supporting said second roll, said bearings being movable in said stands for variable spacing intermediate said first and second rolls, toggle means supporting said bearings, cam'means cooperating with said toggle means for their actuation, hand actuated means operative on said toggle means for setting their position and means for driving said rolls and said cam members.
8. A roll mill for rolling articles having variable cross. section along their extent cdmprising stands, a roll mounted for revolution about a normally stationary axis in said stands, a second roll, bearings for rotatably supporting said second roll, said bearings being movable in said stands for variable spacing intermediate said first and second rolls, means for supporting said bearings, each of said supporting means comprising a member abutting on said stand and a member abutting on said bearings and a hinge for articulating together said members, said hinge having its axisperpendicular to the axis of said second roll, cam means cooperating with -said articulated supporting means for their actuation, means operative on said hinges for setting their position and the deflection of said supporting means and means for driving said rolls and'said cam members.
