(ol. 249-123) l This invention relates to thimbles, used inconnection with cables, ropes or the like, the primary object of the invention being. to provide a thimble to which a cable or rope maybe secured in 5 such a way that all dangerof the rope orcable slipping over the thimble, is eliminated, and wear at the end of the rope or cable is reduced to a minimum.
An important object of the invention is to l provide a thimble to which a cable or rope may be readily and easily secured, the thimble being provided with means to guard the end of the rope or cable against untwisting, and at the same time conceal the twisted end thereof. i With the foregoing and other objects in View, which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise enrbodiment of the invention herein described, may be made within the scope of what is claimed, without departing from the spirit of the invention.

Figure l is an elevational View of a thimble constructed in accordance with the invention, and illustrating a cable as positioned thereon.

Figure l0 illustrates a thimble having a further modified form of guard.
Referring to the drawings in detail, the thimble embodies a main portion indicated by the reference character 5, and as shown, includes a curved portion formed with a channel for the reception of the cable or rope, positioned thereon, the cable in the present showing being indicated by the reference character 6.
Openings 'I are formed in the channel of the main portion, and through which the cable is threaded, in securing the cable to the main kportion of the thimble.
Pivotally connected with the main portion, is a guard indicated by the reference character 8,
the guard being of a construction to substantially house thelower end of the main portion 5, completely concealing the twisted portion and end of the cable used with the thimble.
Due to the pivotal connection between the main portion 5 and guard 8, it will be seen that the guard may be swung away from the main portion, to permit the cable to be readily and easily positioned over the main portion, whereupon the guard may be swung to its active position as shown by Figures 1 and 2 of the drawings.
This guard is constructed of a length of sheet metal material bent upon itself, the sides of the guard being spaced apart to receive the cable. The edges of the guard are tapered as at 9 eliminating shoulders and abrupt surfaces which would tend to catch in articles, should the cable be dragged along over a surface. y
After the cable or rope used with the thimble, has been properly positioned thereon and the guard 8 has been moved to a position to conceal the twisted ends of the cable or rope, a cotter key indicated by the reference character I0 is positioned in the registering openings of the guard, the cotter key passing between the twisted portions of the cable or rope, to prevent the cable or rope from becoming untwisted, and at the same time provide means for holding the guard in its active position to conceal the twisted ends of the cable or rope.
In the modified form' of the invention as illustrated by Sheet 2 of the drawings, the main portion of thimble is indicated by the reference character II, and like the main portion 5 of the thimble illustrated by Sheet l of the drawings, is provided with a groove or channel-way in which the cable, which is indicated by the reference character I2, is positioned.
In this form of the invention, the guard is indicated by the reference character I3, and as shown, is substantially tubular in formation, the guard being tapered or substantially cone-shaped, as clearly shown by Figure 6.
At the upper end of the guard I3, is an extension indicated by the reference character I4, which extension is disposed transversely of the open end of the guard, dividing the upper end of the guard into lateral passageways through which the cable I2 is passed. An opening I5 is formed in the extension I4, and the cable is passed transversely through the opening, portions of the cable being crossed within the opening of the extension, as' shown by Figure 7 of the drawings.
In order that the guard I3 will be held in its proper position with respect to the main portion Il, the guard is formed with openings to accommodate the cotter key indicated by the reference character I6. This cotter key is extended between twisted portions of the cable, as shown by Figures 7 and l0 of the drawings, eliminating any possibility of the guard I3 moving longitudinally of the cable.
'I'he guard shown by Figure 10 of the drawings, is substantially the same as the guard I3, and is indicated by the reference character II. In this form of the invention the extension is omitted at the upper end of the guard I1, and the pointed end of the thimble proper, extends into the wide end of the guard I1. In this form of the invention a cotter key indicated by the reference character I8 extends through the guard and between the twisted portionsI of the cable, as shown.
Y From the foregoing it will be seen that due to the construction shown and described, I have provided a. guard which completely houses the twisted portion of the cable, to the end that all danger of the twisted portion of the cable becoming displaced, is eliminated, and the unsightly twisted portion of the cable is completely concealed by the guard.

A thimble of the class described, comprising a mainv portion having a channel formed therein, said channel having openings arranged at opposite sides of the body portion and through which crossed portions of a cable used with the 10 thimble are passed, a guard member forming a part of the thimble and adapted to house the free ends of the cable, and means for securing the guard against movement with respect to the main portion of the thimble,

A thimble of the class described, comprising a main portion having a channel in which a cable is positioned, said main portion having openings through which crossed portions of cable are extended, securing' the cable on the thimble, 20 a guard member housing the crossed portion of the cable, said guard member being tapered in a direction away from; the main portion of the thimble, and means for securing the guard against movement with respect to the cable.
