filed October 13th, 1937.
Some of the objects of the invention having been stated, other objects will appear as the description proceeds when taken in connection with the accompanying Figure l is a transvers drawing, in whiche sectional view through the battery and lay of the loom showing the invention applied thereto;

Referring more specifically to the drawing, the numeral l0 denotes a conventional hopper stand for a battery loom which has rotatably mounted therein as at H a hopper plate l2, said hopper plate being adapted to cooperate with another hopper plate, not shown, for supporting bobbins of yarn IS. The hopper plate l2 has .a toothed 16 gear |4 integral therewith which is adapted to be engaged by advancing ratchet l5, said ratchet being pivotally secured as at-IB to transfer arm l1. The transfer arm is mounted for oscillation around stud shaft l9 and has pivotedto its downstanding leg as at 20 a suitable dog 2|. The segment i4 is also engaged by a suitable detent ratchet which is pivoted as at 26 to the hopper stand l0.
When the filling on the bobbin which is in the 25 shuttle 21 becomes exhausted, the dog 2| will be rotated in a counter-clockwise manner by conventional mechanism, not shown, and upon, forward oscillation of the lay 28, the bunter 29 which is secured thereto, will contact this dog 3 and rotate the transfer arm IT to the position shown in Figure 2. The lowermost bobbin M will be thereby transferred into the shuttle 21 and upon the restoring of the transfer arm to the normal position as shown in Figure 1 the advancing ratchet I5 will engage the next succeeding tooth in the toothed gear l4 and advance the hopper disk |2 and the next succeeding bobbin to the lowermost position. The structure thus far described is conventional, but is thought necessary to show and describe this much of the old structure in order to more clearly set forth my invention.
In order to normally hold the lowermost bobbin or package of yarn l3 during the operation of the loom and prevent rotation thereof, I have provided a downwardly projecting arm 30 which has a serrated contact portion 3| integral with the lower portion thereof. This portion presses against the yarn on the lowermost package I3, except during the transfer of the bobbin into the shuttle 21.
The arm 30 is adjustably secured to a shaft 40, said shaft likewise being mounted for oscillation in the free end of transfer arm H and at such a position that the contact portion 3| will engage the periphery of the lowermost package l3. The other end of the shaft 40 has an arm 40a integral therewith and bent substantially at right angles to the portion 40. When the arm 30 is in a supporting position, the bent portion 40a, of shaft 40 is adapted to rest upon a cam portion 25a which is provided on a counter-weight 2512 on lower portion of the detent ratchet 25. It will be noted that the lower counterweight portion 25a of the detent ratchet 25 has been built up to such an elevation so that the cam surface 25a will be in the proper elevation for supporting the arm 46a and the bobbin support in, the proper position when the bobbin is being contacted. The portion 40a is normally held in contact with the cam surface 250 by means of a suitable torsion spring 4| which is adapted to encircle the intermediate portion of the shaft 40, said spring having one endthereof engaging the downstanding arm 38 and having its other end engaging the top portion of the transfer arm I1.
When a transfer is being made the dog Zli will be thrown to a horizontal position (see Figure 2) at which time the bunter 29 will rotate the transfer arm in a clockwise manner. Then the portion 40a will slide upon the cam surface 250, and cause the shaft 40 and its associated arm 30 tobe rotated in a clockwise manner to thereby withdraw the portion 3| from contact with the package of yarn before the transfer arm engages the lowermost bobbin.
In other words, the invention comprises a bobbin support having sprlng pressed means for normally forcing the bobbin support into contact with the lowermost bobbin and having cam means for withdrawing the support from the bobbin upon the actuation of the transfer arm.
I am aware that bobbin holders have heretofore been provided in w ch a member is reciprocatably or sli'dably mounted and engages the filling on the lowermost filling carrier. This structure has the disadvantage of not being drawn directly away from the filling upon a transfer but resulting in a tangential movement with respect to the filling carrier, thus damaging the yarn. By providing a filling carrier holder which is mounted for swinging movement in the are of a circle, or a true oscillatory movement, the holder is withdrawn from the yarn without chafing the yarn.
In the drawing and specification there has been set forth a preferred embodiment of the invention, and although specific terms are employed, they are used in a generic and descriptive sense only, and not for purposes of limitation, the scope of the invention being set forth in the appended claims.
I claim;
1. In a loom having a lay carrying a shuttle and a rotary hopper for holding a plurality of bobbins, a transfer arm for transferring the lowermost bobbin into the shuttle upon exhaustion or parting of the filling, a finger pivotally mounted on the transfer arm and having its lower end adapted to engage the lowermost bobbin and hold it against turning movement, spring-pressed means for normally holding said finger in engagement with said bobbin, and fixed means engageable by said finger for rotating said finger away from said bobbin upon the movement of said transfer arm to transfer said bobbin into the shuttle.
2. In a battery loom having a hopper and a lay carrying a shuttle, said hopper having means for holding a plurality of bobbins filled with yarn, a pivoted transfer arm for transferring the lowermost bobbin in the hopper into the shuttle upon exhaustion of filling on the bobbin in the shuttle, a finger having its upper end pivotally mounted on the transfer arm and having means on the lower end thereof for engaging the yarn on the lowermost bobbin in the hopper to prevent rotation of said lowermost bobbin, spring means engaging the transfer arm and the finger for holding the lower end of the finger in contact with the yarn on the lowermost bobbin, and means engageable by the upper portion of the finger as the transferarm is swung downwardly on its pivot to move the lower end of the finger out of contact with the yarn on the lowermost bobbin about to be transferred from the hopper to the shuttle.
3; In a battery loom having a rotary hopper for holding a plurality of bobbins to be transferred into the shuttle in the loom, a transfer arm for engaging the lowermost bobbin in the hopper and transferring it into the shuttle, a finger pivotally mounted at its upper end on the transfer arm and having its lower end normally in engagement with the yarn on the lowermost bobbin, means for normally holding the lower end of said finger in engagement with the yarn on the lowermost bobbin when the transfer arm is in raised position, and other means engageable by the transfer arm upon downward movement of the transfer arm for moving the lower end of the finger from engagement with the yarn on the lowermost bobbin before the transfer arm engages the lowermost bobbin to transfer it into the shuttle.
