This invention relates to a means for holding the lowermost filling carrier or bobbin in a magazine loom so as to prevent its rotation or oscillation prior to being transferred into the shuttle of the loom. More specifically, it relates to a bobbin support which is swingably and oscillatably supported by the transfer arm and which is normally held in supporting position in relation to the lowermost filling carrier in the magazine, said support being oscillatable by cam means on the loom upon the movement of the transfer arm so as to withdraw the bobbin support from the filling car rier.
It has been experienced heretofore that vibration in looms causes rotation or oscillation of the lowermost filling carrier, resulting in the end of the thread which extends from these filling carriers becoming broken. When the carrier with a broken or loose end of yarn is finally transferred into the shuttle, the end will not be engaged by the thread gripper. As a result the filling will not be left in the warp as the shuttle is impelled through the shed and a mispick or thin place in the cloth will appear.
It is, therefore, an object of this invention to provide a means for engaging the yarn on the lowermost filling carrier or bobbin in a magazine prior to its transfer into the shuttle of the loom to prevent turning movement thereof, said means comprising a lever pivotally secured on the transfer arm and having its lower end normally contacting the intermediate portions of the yarn on the lowermost filling carrier and means for simultaneously withdrawing the bobbin support from contact with the yarn on filling carrier upon rotation of the transfer arm.
Some of the objects of the invention having been stated, other objects will appear as the description proceeds when taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, in which:
Figure 1 is a transverse sectional view taken through the battery and lay of the loom showing the invention applied thereto;
Figure 2 is a view similar to Figure 1, but showing the position of the parts during the transfer of one of the lowermost bobbins from the magazine to the shuttle;
Figure 3 is an isometric view of the invention separate and apart from the loom.
Referring more specifically to the drawing the numeral I0 denotes a conventional hopper stand Y for a battery loom which has rotatably mounted therein as at H a hopper plate 12, said hopper plate being adapted to cooperate with another hopper plate, not shown, for supporting bobbins of yarn I3. The hopper plate l2 has a toothed gear 14 integral therewith which is adapted to be engaged by advancing ratchet 85, said ratchet being pivotally secured as at IE to transfer arm ll. The transfer arm is mounted for oscillation around stud shaft l9 and has pivoted to its downstanding leg as at 20 a suitable dog 2|. The segment I4 is also engaged by a suitable detent ratchet 25 which is pivoted as at 26 to the hopper stand I 0.
When the filling on the bobbin which is in the shuttle 21 becomes exhausted, the dog 2| will be rotated in a counter-clockwise manner by conventional mechanism, not shown, and upon forward oscillation of the lay 28, the hunter 29 which is secured thereto, will contact this dog and rotate the transfer arm H to the position shown in Figure 2. The lowermost bobbin I4 will be thereby transferred into the shuttle 21 and upon the restoring of the transfer arm to the 1 provided a downwardly projecting arm 30 which has a serrated contact portion 3| integral with the lower portion thereof. This portion presses against the yarn on the lowermost package I3, except during the transfer of the bobbin into the shuttle 21. The upper end of the arm 30 is adjustably secured to a suitable shaft 32 by any suitable means such as set screw 33 (see Figure 3). This shaft is pivotally secured near the free end of the transfer arm I! and has integral with the other end thereof another member 32a which is positioned substantially at right angles to the shaft 32. The member 32a has a slot 32b therein which is adapted to fit over a stationary laterally projecting pin 34, said pin being secured in the upper portion of post 35. The lower end of the post 35 rests upon the base of the hopper stand I0 and is secured thereto by any suitable means such as set screw 36.
It is therefore seen that when a transfer is made, the transfer arm I! is rotated in a clockwise manner about shaft l9 thereby causing the extreme right-hand end of the transfer arm to engage the ends of the lowermost bobbin and transfer the same into the shuttle 21. In the meantime, however, the lever 30 and the contact portion 3| of the bobbin support are simultaneously rotated in a clockwise manner, at a much faster rate of speed so as to withdraw support from the lowermost bobbin before the transfer arm I! engages the same. Upon the completion of the transfer, of course, the reverse movement of the transfer arm will take place and contact portion 3| will be restored to the original position. At this time the portion 2| will engage the next succeeding package of yarn 13 which has been rotated to lowermost position.
In the drawing and specification there has been set forth a preferred embodiment of the invention, and although specific terms are employed, they are used in a generic and descriptive sense only, and not for purposes of limitation, the scope of the invention being set forth in the appended claims.
I claim:
1. In a battery loom having a hopper and a lay carrying a shuttle, said hopper having means for holding a plurality of bobbins filled with yarn, a pivoted transferer for transferring the lowermost bobbin in the hopper into the shuttle upon exhaustion of filling on the bobbin in the shuttle, a finger having its upper end pivotally mounted on the transfer arm and having means on the lower end thereof for engaging the yarn on the lowermost bobbin in the hopper to prevent rotation, fixed means engaging the upper portion of the finger for holding the lower end of the finger in contact with the yarn on the lowermost bobbin, said fixed means being engageable by said finger to move the lower end of the finger out of contact with the said lowermost bobbin when the transfer arm is moved downwardly in a transfer operation.
2. In a battery loom having a rotary hopper for holding a plurality of bobbins to be transferred into the shuttle in the loom, a transfer arm .for engaging the lowermost bobbin in the hopper and transferring it into the shuttle, a finger pivotallymounted at its upper end on the transfer arm and having its lower end normally in engagement with the yarn on the lowermost bobbin,

3. In a loom having a lay carrying ashuttle and a rotary hopper for holding a plurality of bobbins, a transfer arm for transferring the lowermost bobbin into the shuttle upon exhaustion or parting of the filling, a finger pivotally mounted on the transfer arm and having its lower end adapted to engage the lowermost bobbin and hold it against the turning movement, fixed means engageable by said finger for holding the lower end of the finger in contact with the yarn on the lowermost bobbin while the transfer arm is in raised position, said fixed means serving to also move the lower end of said finger away from contact with the yarn on the lowermost bobbin as the transfer starts travelling downward in a transfer operation.
4. In a battery loom having a lay and a shuttle and a rotary hopper for holding a plurality of filled bobbins, and also having a transfer arm for transferring the lowermost bobbin from the hopper into the shuttle under certain conditions, a finger having its upper end pivotally mounted on said transfer arm for oscillation, a fixed means on the battery, means forming a part of said finger and engageable by said fixed means to hold the lower end of said finger in contact with the yarn on the lowermost bobbin while the transfer arm is in raised position and serving to move the lower end of said finger away from contact with the yarn on the lowermost bobbin as the transfer begins its downward travel in a transfer operation.
5. In a battery loom having a rotary hopper forholding a plurality of bobbins, a lay and a shuttle carried by the lay, a transfer arm mounted for swinging movement for transferring the lowermost bobbin in the hopper to the shuttle, a bolt rotatably mounted in the transfer arm, a finger having its upper end secured on said bolt and having a concave surface on its lower end, an arm also fixed on said bolt, means normally engaging said arm to hold the concave surface against the yarn on the lowermost bobbin while the transfer is in raised normal position and said last-named means also serving to rotate said bolt upon downward movement of the transfer arm to move the lower end of the finger out of contact with the lowermost bobbin.
