(crm-205) This invention relates to separable fasteners employing stringers having coupling elements with a slider movable along the stringers to couple and uncouple said elements, and particularly to devices of this class employing detachably cou- 'pled end stops at one end of the fastener stringers whereby said stringers may be separated to adapt the fasteners to uses requiring the entire separation of the stringers thereof; and the object of the invention is to provide an end stop of the class described including a yielding portion adapted to be engaged by the slider to control the coupling and uncoupling of one of the stringers in the operation of attaching and detaching said stringers; a further object being to provide an end stop, the yieldable element of which also serves to support and maintain the slider in engagement with the end stop when the stringers are separated in order to maintain the slider in position to facilitate recbupling of -the strlngers` whenever desired; a still further object being to provide a detachably coupled end stop wherein the yieldable part of said stop and a .companion coupling part of one Stringer are provided one with a recess or channel, and the other with a projection entering the channel to maintain said parts against relative longitudinal movement when coupled togethenwith other` means for retaining said parts against lateral displacement with respect to each other; and with these and other objects in view, the invention consists in a device of the class and for the purpose specified, which is simple in construction, efficient in use, and which is constructed as hereinafter described and claimed.

In Fig. 1 of the drawing, I have indicated one end portion of a separable fastener employing stringers I0, Il, each having coupling links or 10 elements I2, I2a, attached to one edge portion thereof and spaced longitudinally of the stringers whereby the stringers may be coupled and uncoupled by asuitable slider I3 movable longitudinally of the stringers as in other devices`of this l5 kind. In the construction shown in Fig. 1, I have i1- lustrated reinforcing coupling plates I4, Ma attached to the ends of the stringers, but it will be understood that these plates may or may not be 20 employed, depending entirely upon the use of the separable fastener. Each of the plates I4, Ma includes parts I5 extending around the adjacentedges I 0a, IIa of the stringers, which in the construction shown are beaded. The plates are ar- "25 ranged on the upper and lower surfaces of theY tapes I0 and II and are secured in position by end flanges I E and prongsll. Secured to each beaded edge Illa, Ilanf the tapes I0 and I I and 'upon the portions I5 of the plates I4 and I 4a are 30 elongated coupling bars I8 and I9 whichV extend beyond the inner ends of the plates I4, Ida.
These bars may be made of any suitable material, but are preferably in the form of channelshaped die castings firmly secured to the tapes 35 wand II. l
At 20, I have shown a coupling body which issubstantially U-shaped in form in longitudinal section, the top wall 2I being longerthan the bottom Wall 22, and the crosshead 23 is of such 40 width as to form channels between the walls 2| and 22 for receiving the bars I8 and I 9. The projecting portion la of the top wall has its free edge rounded, and this projection is slightly flared upwardly so as to permit free movement of the slider beneath the projection 2Ia in order to raise a projection or, pin 24 on the wall 2l, 2Ia out of engagement with a recess 25 formed in the bar I8. The construction 24, 25 provides means for keying or retaining the bar I8 against displacement from,the channel of the coupling body 2li.
The side edges of the bottom wall 22 of the body 2li are turned upwardly as indicated at 22a 55' to form retaining flanges, one of which guides the bar I8 in its movement into the channel and retains the same against lateral movement with respect to the body 20, whereas the bar I9 rests against the other flange 22a, said bar being secured to the body 2l) by riveting or in any other desired manner as indicated at 2B. The free end 22b of the wall 22 forms a stop limiting the movement of the slider in the direction of the body 20.
In Figs. 5 to 8 inclusive, I have shown arslight modification in the construction which consists in substituting fo'r the body 20 a substantially 1 similar body 29, the top wall 30 of which is severed along the line 3|, which also extends through the crosshead of the body 29 to form a freely flexing or yielding side portion 32, the front end portion 33 of which is of a width equal to the full width of the body 29 and is separated from the top plate 30 proper., by the cut as indicated at 34. With this construction, a pin or projection 35 is formed on the yielding part 32, and this part 35 is equivalent to the part 24 and is adapted to enter a recess 25a in a bar I8a similar to the bar I 8.-
Aside from the foregoing changes in the construction, the structure shown in Figs. 5 t'q,8 inclusive is the same as that shown inthe other figures, and the same references will indicate like parts in the respective views.- It is understood that in Fig. 5 ofthe drawing, the Stringer I0 and its associated parts have been removed to indicate the separation of the stringers and to clearly show that the body`29 is viixedly secured to the strip Ilby tnerivet 28a as in the construction shown in Fig. 1. 'I'he primary difference between the two gures is that in Fig. 1 of the drawing, the entire top plate 2I-2Ia 'iieiesupwardlx whereas, in the construction shown in Figs. 5 to 8 inclusive, theparts 32-33 only of the top plate are nexed upwardly. By
`extending the cut or severing line' 3l over the crosshead, a. greater resiliency is provided in the yielding portion.
With the forms of construction disclosed, in the operation of uncoupling the fastener stringers, the slider is movedin the direction 4of thel end stop. In this operation, the narrow contracted end I3a of the slider extends beneath the yielding portion 2Ia of the top plate 2l or the part 33 and forward end of the part 32, which operation serves to raise the pin or projection 24- 35 out of engagement with the recess 25, 25a" to permit the free removal of the companion stringer from the end stop body 2li-29. In this connection it will also be understood that byv reason of the tensional engagement of the yielding portion of the body with the slider, the slider will be maintained in position against the end of the bottom wall so as to facilitate the recoupling of the stringers, in which operation, the bar I8-I8a is first passed through the usual channel of thefslider and then into the channel of the stop body 20, 29.
In the operation of drawing the slider away from the body 20, 29, 'in recoupling the stringers, as partially indicated in Fig. 1 of the drawing, the pin orprojection 24-35 will automatically drop into the recess 25, 25a to retain the bar I8--I8a against longitudinal movement with respect to the body 2li-29. Upon a consideration of Fig. 1 of the drawing, it will be noted that the outer side edge of the bar` I8 is preferably beveled to facilitate insertion of the bar into the .channel of the body 20. In constructing the yieldable wall Aor wall portions 2o, 'il- 32, 33, the same may. be constructed so as to tensionally engage the bar I8 and I8a when the latter is within the body 20, 29 in coupled relation so as lto securely and rigidly retain the -bar in position and to aid in preventing relative movement of the parts. The several parts' of the end stop may be modified as to form and dimensions to suit various kinds and classes of installations, as well as sizes ofseparable fasteners employed. y

Having fully described my invention,- wht I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. A detachably coupled end stop for separable fastener stringers comprising a U-shaped body secured to one side edge portion of a stringer at one end thereof in such manner as to dispose a channeled portion of said body outwardly of` said edge of the stringer, said channeled portion having a spring wall-having acoupling element thereon, the other stringer having an elongated coupling bar on the edge portion thereof adapted to enter said channeled portion, said coupling bar having means engaged by said coupling element in securing the stringers together, and means for moving said yieldable coupling element out. of engagement with said bar to permit withdrawal of thebar from said channeled portion.
2. A separable fastener of the class described comprising stringers adapted to be coupled and uncoupled and a slider movable longitudinally of the stringers to couple and uncouple the same',

8. A separablefastener of the class described comprising stringers adapted to be coupled and i uncoupled and a slider movable longitudinally of the stringers to couple and uncouple the same, means at one end of the stringers for coupling said stringers, said means comprising parts secured to'each Stringer, said parts being coupled and uncoupled by relative movement longitudinally one with respect to the other and having interengagingmelements for retaining the. same against relative movementand means engaged by the slider when in juxtaposition to said parts permitting coupling and uncoupling of said parts.
9. A separable fastener of the class described comprising stringers adapted to be coupled and uncoupled and a slider movable longitudinally of the stringers to couple and uncouple the same, means at one end of the stringers for coupling said stringers, said means comprising parts secured to each Stringer, said parts being coupled and uncoupled by relative movement longitudinally one with respect to the other and having interengaging elements for retaining the same against relative movement, meansengaged by the slider when in juxtaposition to said parts permitting coupling and uncoupling of said parts, and interengaging means on one of said parts and said slider for retaining the same against accidental displacement and for maintaining predetermined alinement of said part and slider.

A detachably coupled end stop for separable fastener. stringers comprising a U-shaped body secured to one side edge portion of a stringer at oneend thereof in such manner as to dispose a channel of said body outwardly ofsaid edge of the Stringer, said body having Ia movable coupling part for engaging a member to be vcoupled therewith. and a portion of said part proiectinginto the channel of said body.

In fasteners employing stringers with a slider movable longitudinally of the stringers to couple and uncouple the same, an end stop at one end of the stringers, means involving interengaging coupling elements on said stop and slider for retaining the slider against detachment from said stop when at the limit of its movement in the direction'of said stop, the coupling element of said stop comprising an elongated spring plate, said stop having a channel at one side thereof in which one of the stringers is slidably mounted, and said spring plate havingl a prin projecting into the channel and adapted to engage the stringe when insertedtherein to retain said Stringer against displacement.

A separable fastener employing stringers adapted to be detachably coupled at one end, said end of the stringers having interengaging parts, one of said parts having a channel arranged outwardly of one side edge of the stringer, the other part being insertable into said channel, said parts being provided one with a movable member and the other with a coupling portion for receiving said member to retain said parts against separation, and means for disengaglng said member from thecoupling portion to permit detachment' of said parts in the separation of -said stringers.

A separable fastener employing stringers and an end stop at one end of the stringers for detachably coupling said stringers, said end stop comprising a socket part on 'one stringer and a pin part on the other stringer, a slider for coupling and uncoupling the stringers independent of said end stop parts, interengaging means on the socket part and slider for retaining the slider against displacement from said part when said slider is arranged adjacent said part, and said last'named means involving a resiliently sup.- ported member on the socket portion of said part and in interlocking engagement with the pin part when inserted into said socket portion. 14. In separable fasteners employing stringers adapted to be coupled and uncoupled, a slider 10 tending throughout the length thereof, and the other a pin,- one end of which is adapted to enter and to be concealed within the channel of said body in coupling said parts together, said enlarged body having. an elongated yieldable portion at one side only thereof and forming one outer wall of the channel in said body, said slider being adapted tov engage' said yieldable walls, and interengaging means on said-yieldable -wall and `on said slider for retaining the i0 slider against accidental movement with respect to the enlarged body of` said end stop.

In fasteners employing stringers with a slider movable longitudinally of the stringers, to co'uple and uncouple the same, an end stop at vone-end of the stringers, said end stop comprising detachably coupled pin and socket parts, the socket part being secured to one Stringer and the 'pin part secured .to the opposed Stringer, the
socket part having a channel arranged longitudinally thereof outwardly of said Stringer to receive said pin part in coupling the stringers together, the channel of said socket'part having a yieldable outer wall, a coupling element on said yieldable wall adapted to engage the slider for retaining the slider against detachment from said socket part when the pin part is detached',
and interengaging means on the pin part and the yieldable wall of said socket part for retaining .the pin part against displacement from theV socket part when the slider is removed from the end stop.
