ILPEI'ERQ. PHQTO-LITHOGRAPHEE. WASHINGTON. D C
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ANDBEW SORG OF KALAMAZOO, MICHIGAN.
IM PROVEM ENT IN SHOE-FASTENERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 215,406, dated May 13, 1879 application filed February 27, 1879.
. amazoo, in the county'of Kalamazoo and State of Michigan, have invented new and useful Improvements in Devices for Fastening Shoes, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to provide fasteners for shoes which will take the place of the buttons and button-holes in common use. They may be used on over'shoes, thereby dispensing with buckles.
The fasteners being ornamental, a shoe provided with thempresents a showy and'attractive appearance; and its greater convenience over the common button facilitates the adjustment of the shoe to the foot. Especially on childrens shoes they will be found very desirable.
I construct the fasteners by blocking them out of any suitable metal or material, substantially in the form shown in Figures 3 and 5 of the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification. I then bend them in the form shown in Figs. 2 and 4, the prongs F F serving to fasten them to the shoe, and the lobes or cars H forming a hole or receptacle, D, to receive and hold the cord 0 by its knob N, (shown in Fig. 1,) said figure being a perspective View of shoe and fasteners secured to it. The cord 0 I secure to the plates E by means of holes seen in Fig. 5.
The knob N and cord 0 may be made of any suitable material, and of any color or form that fancy may dictate, as also may be the plates, Figs. 2 and 4, as long as they substantially meet the design of my invention.
My mode of arranging the fasteners on the shoe is shown in Fig. 1, but the receptacle D for receiving the cord 0 and knobs N may be secured to the shoe A proper instead of on the fly-piece B, and, vice versa, the plate E, to which the cords G are attached, as the judgment of the wearer may dictate.
To operate the fasteners after they have been attached to the shoe A and fly-piece B, the cord 0, with its knob N, is placed in the hole or receptacle D, as shown in Fig. 1.
What I claim and desire to secure is- The combination, with a shoe, of the receptacle-plate, cord-plate, each provided with an attaching prong'or prongs, cord, and knob, when constructed and secured to the shoe, substantially as described, and for the purpose set forth.
ANDREW SORG.
