Description

April 1939- w. A. GOODEN 2,153,461
ATTACHMENT FOR GRAIN BINDERS Filed March 17, 1938 1 fl J1 60046 Patented Apr. 4, 1939 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE Application March 1'7,
4 Claims.
This invention relates to an attachment adapted to be applied to or to replace a conventional outside supplemental divider on a grain binder.
An important object of this invention is to provide a device which may be attached to the supplemental divider to be actuated by the weight of grain and vines near the outside of the binder to direct them onto the conveyor and to prevent them from dragging between the conveyor and divider.
The invention as disclosed is applied to a supplemental divider as conventionally constructed for use with grain binders, but this device could be equally well applied to a binder without a supplemental divider since the invention can be constructed to perform all the functions of the supplemental divider by extending it further toward the front of the machine.
This attachment eliminates the necessity of frequently stopping the binder to remove down grain and vines which are dragging on the end of the conveyor.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will hereinafter become more fully apparent from the following specification of which the drawing forms a part, and wherein:--
Figure 1 is a side elevational view showing the invention applied to the supplemental divider of a conventional grain binder shown in section,
Figure 2 is a top plan view of the same,
Figure 3 is a cross sectional View on the line 3-3 of Figure 1, and
Figure 4 is a substantially horizontal sectional view on the line 44 of Figure 1.
Referring more particularly to the drawing wherein like reference characters indicate like or corresponding parts throughout the different views, It designates generally the outside portion of a conventional grain binder, shown to illus- O trate the invention, and including a part of the table or conveyor II and cutter [2, a reel support l3, the divider l4, and the supplemental divider I5.
The attachment constituting this invention comprises a shield it which is tapered longitudinally and which is bent lengthwise to form substantially a segmental cone, which is secured to the inner side of member l5, by means of the fastenings I8, with its open side against member l5 and with its small end I1 to the front.
An angular shaped bracket [9 is mounted in the shield IS with one side secured by fastenings to member [5. The opposite side of bracket [9 is provided with an opening 2| in which is ounted one end of an axle 22. A corresponding 1938, Serial No. 196,505
bracket 19 is secured to support l3 and has the opposite end of axle 22 mounted in its opening 2 I.
Mounted to rotate on axle 22 is a roller 23 having its forward end extending into shield l6 and provided with a collar 24 adjacent its opposite end to form a guard.
From the foregoing it will be obvious that vines and down grain picked up by the divider l4 and the supplemental divider l5 will contact the ta-- pered shield l5 and move past it into contact with roller 23 which will be revolved by the weight of the vines and grain to direct them onto the conveyor H. Should the vines or grain remain on the roller 23 they. will be prevented from 15 passing beyond it by the guard 24 which will cooperate with guard 25, of the divider I4, to direct the vines and grain onto conveyor l I. Thus vines and grain which have been cut by teeth [2 but which are near the outside of the machine l0 cannot engage between the end of the conveyor II and the divider l4 so that they will drag against the conveyor and possibly stop the operation of the machine I B. The roller 23 is rotated only by the weight of the vines or grain so that there is no chance of them becoming entwined around the roller 23 as would occur if roller 23 was provided with some positive actuating means.
Various changes and modifications, such as heretofore mentioned, may obviously be resorted to without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as hereinafter claimed.
I claim as my invention:
1. An attachment for grain binder dividers comprising a segmental cone shaped shield secured to the inner side of the divider with its open end to the rear, a roller rotatably mounted on said binder and having its forward end extending into said shield to receive the vines therefrom, said roller being rotated by the vines to direct them onto the binder. conveyor, and a guard mounted adjacent the rear end of the roller to prevent the vines from passing off of the rear end thereof.
2. An attachment for supplemental dividers comprising a tapered shield adapted to be secured to the divider with its open end to the rear, an axle having its forward end mounted in said shield, a roller mounted on said axle and adapted to receive vines and down grain from said divider and to be revolved by their weight to direct them onto the binder conveyor, and a guard mounted on said roller to prevent the vines and grain from passing beyond the roller.
3. An attachment for grain binder dividers comprising a rotatable member adapted to be operated by the weight of vines and grain to direct them onto the binder conveyor, a shield surrounding one end of said member and adapted to direct the vines to it, and a guard arranged adjacent its opposite end to prevent the vines and grain from passing beyond said member.
4. An attachment for grain binders comprising a rotatably mounted roller disposed above and adjacent to a divider board and adapted to be revolved by the weight of vines and grain to direct them onto a conveyor, and a disk-shaped member secured to said roller adjacent its rear or upper end and forming a guard to prevent the grain and vines from passing beyond the roller.
