This invention relates to-a cutting device for inserting album pictures.

The primary object of this invention is to provide a cutting device for the above mentioned purposehaving a cutting blade adapted to engage an album leaf for the purpose of cutting a slot therein to receive the end edge of a photograph. In addition', the blade may be of such dimension as to be slightly wider than the thickness of a piece of album sheet paper.

A further object of this: invention is to provide a cutter of the above mentioned character carried by a convenient hand block having a slot formed in one side wall thereof defining interior 15 right angle Walls for receiving the end of a photograph when the cutter is being employed.

A further object of this invention is to provide a cutter of the above mentioned character in which the slot formed in the side wall is directly above the cutting element or blade so that an exact measurement may be made as to the location of the slot desired before disguring the album. sheet or leaf.

A further object of this invention is to provide 35 a cutting blade attached to a block for convenient manipulation by the user with the length of the blade being slightly greater than the Width of the gage slot formed in the block.

Figure 5 is a bottom plan view of a modified form of the invention in which the cutting element is slightly curved and extends from the area adjacent the external right angle Wall;

Figure 6 is a bottom plan View of a still further modified form of the invention in which the cutting element is shaped in a zig-Zag fashion;

Figure 7 is a plan View of an album leaf illustrating the manner in which the cutting device is to be employed when inserting photographs in the leaves of the album; and

Figure 8 illustrates a double leaf album sheet arranged-to accommodate photographs on both sides thereof.

In the drawing, wherein for the purpose of illustrating the invention and wherein like reference characters will be employed to designate like parts throughout the same, the reference character I Il will generally beemployed to designate a block of wood or other suitable material on the top of which is formed a knob II serving as a handle.

The underside of the block IG is provided with a vertical slot i2 extending partly across the bottom surface adjacent one of the marginal edges thereof.4 Mounted within the slot I2 is a cutting blade I 3 held in place by pins I4 and the cutting portion of the blade I 3 extends beyond the bottom surface of the block IU a distance slightly greater than the width of a sheet of card paper or cardboard from which the album leaves of albums are made.

Directly above the cutter blade I3 there is, formed in one side wall of the block IIJ a slot I5 having right angle walls I5a adapted to engage the edges of one of the corners of a sheet of paper or photograph.

As shown in Figs. 5 and 6 in the modified forms of the invention, the cutter blade l3nt in Fig. 5 is arcuately curved and the ends of the cutter extend to the area adjacent the right angle walls I5b` of the slot |50.

In the modied form of invention as shown in Fig. 5, the cutter blade I3b is angularly bent at intervals to form a zig-zag slot in the album leaf which it has been found provides a neater appearance for the mounting of photographs which cover nearly the entire positive sheet.

The block as shown in Fig. 6 at lUb is identical to the form of invention shown in Figs. 1 to 5 inelusive and the slot lh has its internal wall at right angles similar to the right angle walls I5a and Ito as shown in Figs, 4 and 5.

In Figs. 7 and 8, there is shown an album leaf Il formed by a pair of sheets I8 and I9 fastened together along their outer free edges by means of a piece of adhesive and fastened on their inner ends as at 2l in any suitable manner. Openings 22 may be formed in the album sheet Il' for insertion in the usual album. In Figs. '7 and 8, the mode of operating the cutter ID is shown in dotted lines, it being understood that the cuts in the sheets I8 and I9 are made before the sheets are joined together at 20. The photograph 23 has one of its corners inserted in the block I within the slot I5. After the corner of the photograph is positioned Within the slot I5, pressure is applied upon the block I0 to cause the blade I3 to cut a slot in the album sheet in the desired location so as to accommodate the corner of the photograph after the cutter block has been removed. By forming the leaves of the album from a pair of sheets I8 and I9, photographs 23 may be mounted on both sides thereof and the corners of the photographs may be inserted in the slots 24. It is also to be understood that .a blank sheet may be inserted between the joined sheets I8 and I9 with the cuts later made, the blank sheet protecting the lower sheet of the joined pair from the cutter blade I3.

It is to be understood that Various shapes of cutters may be employed in this device and that the form of the invention herewith shown and described is to be taken as a preferred example or embodiment of the same.

I claim:

1. A cutting device of the character described, comprising a rectangular block, a cutting blade mounted on the underside of the block adjacent one marginal edge thereof, a handle formed on the upper surface of the block and the side Wall of the block having an opening therein adapted to receive the corner of a photograph for gaging the location of the cutter.

2. A cutting device of the character described, comprising a rectangular block, said block having a V-shaped gage slot formed in one side Wall thereof, a curved cutter blade mounted on the bottom Wall of the block, said cutter blade being Within the projection of the V-shaped gage slot on the underside of the block and adjacent the side wall in which the opening of the slot terminates and a handle secured to the top wall of the rectangular block for manipulating the same.

3. A cutting device of the character described, comprising a rectangular block having a V- shaped gage opening at one side Wall thereof, a cutter blade mounted in the bottom Wall of the rectangular block having areas bent at right angles forming a zig-zag cutting edge, and a handle secured to the top Wall of the cutter block for the purpose of manipulating the cutter.

4. In a cutting device of the character described, a body, a cutter depending from the body and a guide carried by the body above the cutter adapted to receive the corner of a photograph or the like for locating the cutter relative to the sheet to be cut and said guide presenting the corner of the photograph or the like in a plane parallel to the lower edge of the cutter.
