3 Claims.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in a portable Turkish or Russian steam bath.
The invention has for an object the construction of a device as mentioned which is characterized by an arrangement by which one may apply steam or hot air to half of ones body, or three-quarters of ones body, or for action upon the whole body.
m Still further the invention proposes an arrangement by which it is possible to control the quantity of steam within the bath.
Another object of the invention is to provide a removable rubber canvas or other flexible memher, or similar material within the bath which may be utilized in dividing the bath, for the application of steam to various portions of the body, as already specified.
Still further the invention proposes a novel no mechanism for producing and controlling the steam.
Another object of the invention is to provide a seat within the bath and to associate this seat with a foot board in a novel manner.
05 For further comprehension of the invention,
and of the objects and advantages thereof, reference will be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, and to the appended claims in which the various novel features 30 of the invention are more particularly set forth.
In the accompanying drawings forming a material part of this disclosure:
Fig. l is a perspective view of a device constructed according to this invention.
Fig. 2 is a front perspective view of the device with the door open.
Fig. 3 is a front elevational view of the device illustrated with the seat and foot board raised.
Fig. 4 is a horizontal sectional view taken on the line 4-4 of Fig. 3.
Fig. 5 is a horizontal sectional view taken on Y the line 5-5 of Fig. 2.
Fig. 6 is a fragmentary vertical sectional view taken on the line 6--6 of Fig. 4. 45 Fig. 7 is a transverse vertical sectional view taken on the line 'l'| of Fig. 3.
Fig. 8 is a rear elevational view of the device. The portable Turkish and Russian steam bath, according to this invention, comprises a hollow 50 body Ill having a front door II, a top hingedly mounted panel I2 and an interior compartment 13 of bench height. A seat I4 is mounted on the bench compartment I3. A foot board I5 is provided for the floor of the body I0. A horizontal 55 screen or rubber canvas material [6 is arranged at the two-thirds elevation within the body ID. A mechanism is also provided within the bench compartment l3 for manufacturing, controlling and supplying steam and hot air as hereinafter more fully described.
The hollow body I0 is of box shape in construction. The door ll thereof is hingedly supported by the hinges Hi. It is provided with a latch I l which may be manipulated from the inside as well as the outside so that the door may be opened when required. The top panel I2 is supported at one side by the hinges IB. It may be held in various raised positions by an arm structure 19 connected between one of the sides and the top of the hollow body. The cover I2 is formed with a central opening 2|] closed by a flexible or other covering element 2|. This covering element 2| is formed with an opening 22 through which ones head may be extended. This opening is adapted to be partially closed by fasn teners 23 arranged upon the ends thereof. It is thus possible to restrict the opening 22 to fit around ones neck and to prevent the free discharge of steam from within the hollow body.
The seat I 4 is pivotally supported at its rear 2 end by a shaft 25 to which the seat is firmly connected. This shaft 25 is supported in bearings 26. Due end of the shaft 25 is provided with a pinion 21 engaged by a chain 28. This chain extends downwards and engages a pinion 29 supn ported on a shaft 30. The shaft 30 is rotatively mounted in bearings 3|. One side of the foot board I5 is rigidly attached to the shaft 30. The arrangement is such that the foot board I5 may pivot upwards and downwards along the are A in Fig. 7. Such pivoting of the foot board will be transmitted to similarly pivot the seat I4, as indicated by the dot and dash lines B.
In its lowered position the seat l4 extends over and covers a steam discharge container 32. This container is connected by a pipe 33 to a control valve 34, which in turn is connected with a boiler 35. The boiler is arranged within the bench compartment l3. Upon the top of the bench compartment l3 there is also a control valve 36, 5 a control switch 31, and a burner switch 38. These devices operate mechanism within the bench compartment, as follows:
v The boiler 35 is supported above a kerosene, gas, or other type of heater 3!! which is controlled by the control 38. The arrangement is such that the control 38 may be turned one way or the other to increase or decrease the size of the flame from the burner 39. The boiler 35 may also be heated by an auxiliary electric heater 40. This electric heater 40 is controlled by an electric circuit within a conduit 4|. The electric circuit within this conduit is controlled by the electric switch 31. The arrangement is such that the switch 31 may be turned on to render the electric heater operative, or turned ofi to turn ofi the heater.
The steam discharge from the boiler 35 is adapted to pass through a pipe 42 which connects with a three-way valve 36. This valve 36 is adapted to be adjusted in one position to send a portion of the steam from the boiler through a pipe 43 which discharges through an opening 44 in the bottom portion of the hollow body l0. Or, the three-way valve 36 may be moved to a position. in which it is fully open to discharge the full supply of steam through the opening 44. The third position of the valve 36 is one in which the steam will discharge through a pipe 45 which discharges into a. condenser 16 which will condense and so dissipate the steam. This condenser is mounted within the bench compartment l3.
At the bottom of the bench compartment I 3 there is a baiile 47 which has several openings 43 through which hot air from within the bench compartment 13 may be discharged. A fan blower, not illustrated on the drawings, may be caused to operate to blow hot air from the interior of the bench compartment through the openings 8 and into the interior of thehollow body [I].
The rubber canvas l6 or similar material, is formed from adjacent sections l6 and lB which are secured together by hookless fasteners 49 upon adjacent sides. These hookless fasteners are controlled by a slide 56. Each of the sections l6 and I6 are releasably mounted within the hollow body Iii by a plurality of snap fastener elements or other holding elements connected between the edges thereof and the side walls of the hollow body ID. The arrangement is such that ones body may pass between the sections HE and W, and the slide 50 pulled up close to the body so as to confine as much steam as possible below the rubber canvas [6.
The operation of the device is as follows:
One may take a Turkish or Russian bath by entering the hollow body I!) through the door opening and closing the door H. The seat l4 may be in the lowered position and then the foot board I5 will also be in its lowered position, in which position it is not possible to raise these parts except if one steps out from the hollow body. In the lowered position of these parts, it is possible to control the operation of the supply of steam for the reason that the seat M is not as wide as the top of the bench compartment 3.
The control valves and apparatus 34, 38, 36 and 31 are arranged at the sides of the seat I4. These controls may be manipulated to heat water within the boiler 35 and create steam, and the steam may be controlled to discharge into the hollow body. By the proper manipulation of the controls and the divisional rubber canvas I6 it is possible to take a steam or heat bath along var-' ious parts of ones body. Still further, it is possible that the treatment be taken sitting down or standing up, as conditions may warrant. The baths may be adjusted so that persons with various ailments such as rheumatism, high blood pressure, appendicitis, and other disorders may use them.
While I have illustrated and described the preferred embodiments of my invention, it is to be understood that I do not limit myself to the precise constructions herein disclosed and the right is reserved to all changes and modifications coming within the scope of the invention as defined in the appended claims.
