1 claim.
'I'he present invention relates to new and useful improvements in razors, particularly safety razors, and has for`one of its important objects to provide, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, a device of this character embodying a novel construction and arrangement whereby the handle may. be conveniently attached to the head at different angles to facilitate meeting various conditions when the razor is in use.
Another very important object of the invention is to provide a razor of the aforementioned character embodying novel means for clamping the blade in position.
Other objects of the invention are -to provide a razor of the character described which will be comparatively simple in construction, strong, durable, highly eicient and reliable in use, compact, attractive in appearance and which may be manufactured at low cost.
All of the foregoing and still further objects and advantages of the invention will become apparent from a study of the following specification, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings wherein like characters of references designate corresponding parts through the several views, and wherein Figure 1 is a view in rear elevation of an embodiment of the invention.
Figure 2 is a view in front elevation thereof.
Figure 3 is a frontelevational View, showing the device open.
Figure 4 is a vertical sectional view, taken substantially on the line 4-4 of Fig. 2.
Figure 5 is a view in horizontal section, taken substantially on the line 5-5 of Fig. 3 but showing the handle in another position.
Figure 6 is a detail view in elevation of the clamp securing means, showing the elements separated.
Figure '1 is a detail view in section, showing one of the pivotal connections of the hinged clamp.
Figure 8 is a detail view in elevation of one of the clamp pivot pins.
Referring now to the drawings in detail, it will be seen that the embodiment of the invention which has been illustrated comprises a guard I of suitable metal. The guard I is provided with integral teeth 2 on its upper and lower edges. Rigidly securer` on the back of the guard I is a substantially U-shaped bracket or yoke 3 of suitable metal. The substantially U-shaped bracket 3 is provided with threaded openings 4in its side and rear or bight portions. The reference numeral 5 designates a detachable knurled handle 1938, Serial No. 210,066
(cl. :io-59) which is adapted to be threaded selectively into the openings 4 for mounting said handle on the head of the razor at thereto, as suggested in Fig. 5 of the drawings.
stantially the shape shown different angles relative full and broken lines in The handle 5 is of subto advantage in Figs.
l and 2 of the drawings.
The reference numeral plate of suitable metal 6 designates a clamping which is hingedly mounted on the outermost lower teeth 2 of the guard I.
It may be well to' here state is adapted to secure a that the clamp 6 conventional double edge exible blade 1 in position against the front of the guard I. Integral lugs y are provided on the corner portions of the clamp 6, said lugs ybeing engageable in the usual corner notches or recesses in the blade 1.
The clamp opening 9 which is opening I0 in the 6 has formed therein a threaded aligned with the usual central blade 1 when said blade is mounted in position. As shown to advantage in Fig. 2 of the drawings,
the arcuate outer face of the clamp 6 is knurled. Pivot screws I I (see Figs. 1 and 8) are threadedly mounted in a. pair of the lugs 8 of the clamp 6. The pivot screws II include reduced, smooth end portions or pins I2 which are journalled in the, outermost teeth of one of the rows of guard teethf'Z for mounting the clamp t' thereon for swinging formed therein a substantially I3. The opening The guard I has conical opening passage of a screw I4 ing head I5 on one end movement.
I3 is for the which includes an operat- Threaded on the screw I4 is a substantially conical nut I6 which is screwed up against the head I5 and which is received by the conical opening I3. The nut I6 is smaller than the opening the screw I4 is loosely I3 and in this manner retained in said opening.
The screw I4 is adapted to be passed through the opening I0 in the blade 1 and threaded into the opening 9 in the It is thought clamp that the operation of the razor will be readily apparent from a. consideration of theforegoing. To insert a is unscrewed from the c blade, the screw I4I lamp 6 thereby permitting said clamp to be swung to open position. The blade 1 is then positioned on the clamp 6, as
seen in Fig. 3 of the clamp, with the blade t position. Thus, the
tightening said clamp mounting of the screw drawings, after which said hereon, is swung to closed blade is brought between the guard I and the clamp 6.
passed through the opening threaded into the opening The screw I4 is then I0 in the blade 1 and 9 of the clampl 6 for on the blade. The loose I4 in the-conical opening 20. thecomhination and Il greatly'facilitates threading said screw into the opening I as the clamp 6, of course, travels in an arc. 'I'he razor is now ready for use. By mounting the handle 5 on the head assembly in the positions suggested in Fig. 5 of the drawings either edge o! the blade may be conveniently used while holding the razor in either the right or the left hand. This choice in the mounting of the handle on the head assembly oi' the raizor also facilitates meeting other conditions that may be that changes in the details of construction and in arrangement of parts may be resorted to which will fall within the scope ot the invention as claimed. What is claimed is:
Il safety razor comprising a guard including v 2,150,056 l i teeth, ahandle mounted on said guard. a clamp for securing a blade in position against the guard, said clamp including integral lugs on its corner portions for retaining the blade in position relative to said clamp, pivot screws threadedly mountedin certain of the lugs and including un threaded portions Journalled in certain of the l guard teeth for hingedly mounting the clamp on said guard, and means for releasably securing the guard in closed position,l the guard having a substantially conical opening therein, the clamp having a threaded opening therein for alignment with the conical opening, said means including a thumb screw extending throughv the conical opening for engagement in the threaded opening, said thumb screw including a head engageable'with the back of the guard, and a substantially conical nut threaded on the thumb with the head thereof, the commodating said nut, the nut being smaller thanthe conical opening and constituting means for loosely securing the thumb screw on the slimming march.
