UNITED STATES PATENT QFFICE.
JEPTHA SPRUILL, OF OSWEGO, KANSAS.
IMPROVEMENT IN VAPOR-BATHS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 214,963, dated April 29, 1879; application filed March 22, 1879.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JEPTHA SPRUILL, of Oswego, in the county of Labette and State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Vapor-Baths and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure 1 of the drawings is arepresentation of a vertical central section of my invention, and Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same.
My invention relates to an apparatus adapted for giving vapor or medicated baths to patients, the same being portable and easily moved from place to place; and the novelty consists in the construction and arrangement of parts, as will be more fully hereinafter set forth.
The object of my invention is to provide a cheap portable means of applying to patients at home, or patients unable to be removed from their beds, in the practice of medicines. such as may be indicated by the nature of the disease, either simple vapor-bath, combined spirit and vapor bath, hot-air bath, or medicated baths of various kinds, in which medicines are made to combine with vapor, and applied as the nature of the ailment would suggest.
In carryin gout my invention I employa box, of sheet metal or other proper material, divided by partition as into combustion-chamber A and a vapor-chamber, B, as shown. The partition no is horizontal, and has an aperture,
:20, in which operates a vessel, I, which holds the water, medicated or otherwise.
The combustion-chamber A has a proper door, L, to allow the manipulation of the lamp H, and valve J, which governs the outlet from such chamber to the tube D. This tube D leads into the vapor-tube O, at the end of which a flexible tube is to be attached.
K represents a valve, whiclf controls the outlet to the chimney E, as shown.
The door L has a cap-cover, M, provided with damper m, to regulate the draft.
If it is desired to give a plain vapor-bath, valve J is closed and valve K opened, and the vapor is conveyed to the patient through the tube 0. To give a water and spirit bath, fill vessel I with water and the lamp with spirit, close valve K, and open valve J. To give a medicated bath, combine the proper medicine with the contents of vessel I or lamp H, or both.
I claim as my invention 1. The valves J and K, combined with the combustion-chamber A and outlets E D, as and for the purposes set forth.
The box described, having partition as w, dbuble tube 0 D. and chimney E, combined with the valves J K, as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
J E PTH A SPRUILL.
