UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
'DAVID W. BULLUOK, OF TARBOROUGH, NORTH CAROLINA.
IMPROVEMENT IN COTTON-SACK PROTECTORS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 214,880, dated April 29, 1879 application filed December 6, 1878.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DAVID W. BULLUcK, of Tarborough, in the county of Edgecombe and State of North Carolina, have invented a new and Improved Cotton-Sack Protector, of which the following is a specification.
In picking cotton long sacks are used, which are dragged upon the ground by the pickers. When filled to any extent these sacks drag heavily and wear out rapidly by contact with the ground.
The object of my invention is to furnish a protector which may be conveniently attached to and removed from the bag, and will protect it from Wear, and render the work of dragging the sack less laborious.
My invention consists in a pair of runners connected together, and having clampingstrips, whereby they may be attached to the side of a bag or sack, and of a size and shape to sustain the bag a short distance from the ground, so that the bag and protector may be drawn over the ground in a manner similar to drawing a sled.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is an inverted plan view, showing my protector attached to a sack. Fig. 2 is a sectional side elevation of the sack and protector. Fig. 3 is a cross-sectional elevation.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
The protector consists of iron bars or rods a a, which may be flat, round, or half-round iron, or other suitable material, such as hard wood. At each end the bars a are bent upward, and connected together by cross-bars b b, the bar I) at the forward end being, by preference, somewhat the shortest, so as to make the protector narrower at that end, and the cross-bars b are also curved slightly downward at the center, to conform to the shape which the bag 0 assumes when filled.
On the upper side of each bar I) is a wood or metal clamping-strip, d, attached by screws 0, so that it may readily be taken off and the bag 0 attached to the protector, in the manner shown, by clamping it beneath strips 01.
As illustrated in the drawings, the principal part of sack c is sustained from the ground by the protector. The upper or month end of the bag is held up by its strap, which will be held by the picker, in the usual manner, in his hand or around his body, and as the bag fills up the principal weight is upon the runners of the protector, which permits the sack to pass over the ground with comparative ease, and
entirely prevents wear. This device saves time and labor, and is very durable, though inexpensive to manufacture.
Having thus described my invention, 1 claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent l. A cotton-sack protector consisting of a pair of runners connected together and adapted for attachment to the sack, substantially as described and shown, and for the purposes set forth.
2. The combination and arrangement of the runners a, cross-bars b, and clamping-strip d, substantially as described and shown, and for the purposes set forth.
DAVID W. B'ULLUOK.
