5 Claims. (CL' 229-34) This invention relates to an improved carton formed from cardboard or other suitable material.

One of the objects of the invention is to pro- 5 vide an improved carton formed from cardboard or other suitable material.

Another object of the invention is to provide a novel display carton having improved means for securing the cover portion in locked position.

10 Other objects of the invention will be apparent from the description and claims which follow. Reference is now had to the drawing in which similar characters of reference are used to designate similar elements.

Figure l is a plan view of the improved carton blank for forming the carton of the present invention.

Figure'2 is a perspective view of the formed carton showing the cover in closed position. Figure 3 is a perspective view of the formed carton showing the cover in display position.

The carton blank illustrated in Figure 1 is formed of cardboardor other suitable material, cut and scored as shown, and comprises a bot- 25 tom l, side walls 2, rear wall 3 and cover 4.

Flaps 5 are formed integral with side walls 2 at the outer edges thereof and preferably extend the full length of side walls 2. Flaps 6 are formed integral with side walls 2 at their rear- -ward ends, one of the flaps 6 being provided with a tongue 1 andthe other of the flaps being provided with a slit 8.

In forming the carton, side walls 2 and rearwall 3 are folded at a right angle to bottom I 85- and the flaps 6 are folded one against the other and against the outer face of rear wall 3 with their respective tongue and slit interlocked thus securing the side walls 2 and rear wall 3 in relative position. v 40 The front wall of the formed carton comprises a batten 9 formed integral with each of the side walls at their forward edges and flap Ill formed integral with bottom I. Battens 9 are folded at a right angle to sides 2 and are each provided 4 with a tongue portion ll of relatively less height and extensible adjacent bottom t. Flap I0 is of a height substantially equal to the height of the tongue portions of the several battens and is tapered inwardly at its side edges, as at I2, 60 to provide a reduced outer edge l3 provided with a tongue l4 foldable between the battens 9. Tongue I4 is folded over and against tongue portions II and is secured by the insertion of 7 locking tabs l5 within slots I6 provided in score line ll.

It will be seen that in theformatlon of the front wall, just described, there is provided a strong reenforced wall partially cut away at its edge adjacent the cover for the display of the product contained within the carton. 5

Cover flap I8 is formed integral with cover 4 and is separated from cover 4 by score line I9. Flap I 8 is provided, at its outer edge, with I tongue 20 cut at its end edges to provide locking tabs 2| registrable with slits 22 in battens 9. 10

The carton is closed by folding flaps 5 at a right angle to sides 2, the cover 4 over and against the flaps 5 and the flap l8 over and against battens 8. The tongue 20 is inserted within front wall It) and the cover secured in locked position by tabs 2| interfitted within slits 22.

As a further display feature, cover 4 may be scored inwardly from its side edges, as at 23 and 24, and arcuately cut on line 25 in a manner to connect the adjacent ends of

26 and 21. When it is desired to use, the carton for display purposes, panel is folded on

23 and 24 over and against panel 21 and the 25 cover flap I8 is inserted within the carton adjacent the inner surface of rear wall 3. As shown in Figure 3, the rearward end edges 28 of flaps 5 serve to engage the folded panel 26 and thus coact with flaps 5 to maintain rear wall 3 in 30 relative folded position and the panels of cover 4 in an upright position.

The dimensional designation, such as, for example, the term fheight" as used in this specification and in the claims which follow, will be understood to denote dimensions of the respective parts as they appear in the formed carton shown in Figures 2 and 3, or in the blank shown in Figure 1, and will be clear from the context of this specification. 40

I claim:

1. In a carton blank including a bottom, side and rear walls and a front wall partially cut away adjacent its cover edge and having locking slits cut inwardly from the cut away edge, means for securing the walls in relative folded position,

a cover formed integral with the rear wall and a cover securing flap adapted for enclosing the Portion cut away from the front wall and provided at its outer edge with a tongue provided with locking tabs adapted to coact and interfit with the slits in the front wall, the tongue and tabs being folded within the front wall.

2. In a carton blank including a bottom, side and rear walls, means for securing the walls in u relative folded position and a cover formed integral with the rear wall, a front wall partially cut away adjacent its cover edge and comprising a batten extensible from each of the side walls and provided with a tongue portion of relatively less height and extensible adjacent the bottom, the battens each being of a height equal to the height of their respective side wall, a flap extensible from the bottom and of a height substantially equal to the height of the tongue portions of the several battens, means. for rigidly securing the bottom flap relative to the tongue portions of the several battens and a cover flap adapted for enclosing the portion cut away from the front wall, thecover flap being provided at its outer edge with a tongue adapted for folding within the front wall, the tongue being provided with a locking tab adapted to interfit and interlock within a slit provided in each of the battens. 3. In a carton blank including a bottom, side and rear walls, means for securing the side and rear walls in relative folded position and a cover formed integral with the rear Wall, a front wall partially cut away adjacent its cover edge and comprising a batten extensible from each ofthe side walls and provided with a tongue portion of relatively less height and extensible adjacent the bottom, the battens each being of a height equal tothe height of their respective side wall, a flap extensible from the bottom and of a height substantially equal to the height of the tongue portions of the several battens, the bottom flap being tapered inwardly at its side edges and at its outer edge provided with a tongue foldable over and against the tongue portions of the several battens in a manner connecting the several battens, means for rigidly securing the bottom fiap'tongue relative to the tongue portions of the several battens and a cover securing flap adapted for enclosing the cut away portion of the front wall and provided with a tongue adapted for folding within the front wall in a manner to secure the cover relative to the front wall.

4. In acarton blank including a bottom, side and rear walls, means for securing the side and rear walls in relative folded position and a cover formed integral with the rear wall, a front wall partially cut away adjacent its cover edge and comprising a batten extensible from each of the side wallsfeach of the battens being provided with a locking slit cut inwardly from theouter edge thereof and with a tongue portion of relatively less height and extensible adjacent the bottom, a flap extensible from the bottom and of a height substantially equal to the height of the tongue portions'of the several battens, a cover securing flap adapted for enclosing the portion cut away from the front wall and provided at its outer edge with a tongue provided with looking tabs adapted to coact and interfit with the locking slits of the several battens, the cover flap tongue .and tabs being folded within the front wall. I

5. In a carton blank including a bottom, side and rear walls, means for securing the side and rear walls in relative folded position and a cover formed integral with the rear wall, a front wall partially cut away adjacent its cover edge and comprising a batten extensible from each of the side walls having a locking slit therein and provided with a tongue portion of relatively less height and extensible adjacent the bottom, the

battens each being of a height equal to the height of their ,respective side wall, a flap extensible from the bottom and of a height substantially equal to the height of the tongue portions of the several battens, the bottom flap being tapered inwardly at its side edges and at its outer edge provided with a tongue foldable over and against the tongue portions of the several battens in a manner connecting the several battens,'means for rigidly securing the bottom flap tongue relative to the tongue portions of the several battens and a cover securing flap adapted for enclosing the cut away portion of the front wall and provided at its outer edge with a tongue provided with locking tabs adapted to coact and interfit with the locking slits of the several'battens, the cover flap torigu and tabs being folded within the front wally THOMAS J.
