Description
I'. CON-DIT. Door-Fastener.
No. 214,758. ,l lPafenmcl Apri |f29, d1379.
UNITED STATES PATENT OEEIoE.
FILLMOBE CONDIT, OF NEWARK, NEW JERSEY.
IM PROVEMENT IN DOOR-FASTENERS.
Specication forming part of Letters Patent No. 214,758, dated April 29, 1879; application filed November 16, 1878.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FrLLMoEE OoNnrT, of Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and useful Improvementin Ice-BoX-Door Fasteners, which improvement is fully described in the followir specification.
My invention consists in an improved fastener for the doors of ice-boxes; and consists in the application of a wedge to the face of the door near the casing, and in pivoting a lever to a strong bolt in the door-frame, so that it may be rotated to press upon the wedge, at pleasure, or moved away from the wedge, to permit the opening` of the door. As the door is more apt to stick in its casing when pressed into the same so firmly, I combine with the wedge a handle to open the door when desired.
My invention is fully shown in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a front view of the fastener. Fig. 2 is an edge view of the wedge B. Fig. 3 is a horizontal section of the lever, taken through the center of the bolt C; and Fig. 4, a socket-bearing for the bolt C.
A is the lever, formed with handle A' and hub A, by which it is secured to the bolt C. B is the wed ,ge-plate, secured to the face of the door F near the casing Gr, and formed, as seen in Fig. 2, with an inclined surface, against which the lever, or a small projection thereon, bears when the lever is turned over the wedge. The bolt C is fitted into the casing Gr close to the edge of the door, and is supported therein by plates D D', or by a tubular socket, H, as shown in Fig. 4, 4
The joint between the door and its casing being made with an inclined surface at G', the movement of the lever-arm over the face of the wedge B presses the door firmly into the casing and closes the joint at G simultaneously, The pressure of the wedge against the inner side of the lever tends to break off the same at the hub A, and produces a great strain upon the bolt C in the direction of the arrow I, to counteract which I provide an iron plate, D, and sink the same into the casing G, to hold firmly to the wood.
The strain upon the lever also tends to pull the bolt out of the casing, to prevent which I screw a nut, C', upon its inner end, :and provide a plate, D', upon the inside of the casing, to support the wear and strain of the nut.
When the inside of the casing is concealed by a partition, 1 use a socket, H, attached to the front plate, D, the nut D bearing in such case against the inner end of the socket.
. To save the expense of eXtra attachments to the door, I combine with the wedge-} laten B a handle, E, formed upon the same, and projecting from the door sufficient-ly to be grasped readily by the hand.
The plates B and D may be secured to the wood by screws a., as shown, or by throughbolts and nuts, if preferred. 4 By the combination of the lever working against the face of the wedge B a power similar to that of a screw is obtained, While the utmost simplicity of construction is secured, and the greatest facility for fastening and unfastenin g the door is afforded.
When thrown away from the front of the door F for opening the same, the lever A is sustained in a nearly vertical position by a stop, b, on the hub of the lever, constructed to strike against a stud, c, on the plate D and prevent the lever from falling over and hanging down from the bolt C, from which position it would otherwise have to be lifted to secure the door.
By the combination of the handle E with the wedge-plate a complete fixture is provided for closing, securing, or opening the door.
I therefore claim as my invention as follows :V
The beveled or wedge-shaped plate B, having a grasping-handle, F, formed on it, in com bination with a pivoted lever, A, bolt G, and plates D D', substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I hereto subscribe my name in the presence of two witnesses.
FILLMORE CONDIT.
Witnesses CHARLES C. HEREICK, Trios. S. CRANE.
