Description

P. @.WORTHLBY. Bracket.
No. 214,741. Patented April 22, 18,79.
UNITED STATES PATENT (Dra-TCE.
FRANK O. WORTHLEY, OF BOSTON, MASSAGE USETTS.
IMPROV-EMENT IN BRACKETS.
Specication forming part of Letters Patent No. 214,741, dated April 22, 1879 application iiled October 30, 1878.
To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK O. VORTBLEY, of Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain Improvements in Flower-Pot Brackets, of which the following is a specification.
The nature of my invention will be found to consist inA the employment, in combination with a swinging bracket, annpright standard, or other proper support, of a hub or head pivoted to and adapted to rotate upon such support, and to receive, interchangeably, and uphold a cluster of branches or arms which radiate from such hub, and in turn each supporting upon its outerend a iiower-pot, lamp, or other object or ornament, the arrangement of the whole being such thatthe cluster of arms may be rotated together in a body, by and with the central hub, upon the pivot of the latter; or, in the event of the support being a swin ging bracket, the arms and hub may swing y in a cluster iu the arc of a circle upon the pivot or hinge oi" the bracket.
The drawings accompanying` this 'specification represent in Figure l a vert-ical section of a flower-pot bracket, so called, containing my invention, while Fig. 2 is a plan ot' the same.
In the said drawings, A represents an arm or bracket, which may be cast in metal more or less ornamental in appearance, and which, when in use, is to be supported so as to swing from its base upon a support, B, which is to be screwed to the wall or window-easing of an apartment, in order that plants supported by it may be changed in position according to the position of the sun or otherwise.
To the outer end of the arm. A, I pivot, by an upright stud or post, C, a head or hub, D,
lin such manner that this head or hub, which,
in addition to its other functions, constitutes a tray or shelf to receive a flower-pot or other obj eet, may revolve upon the arm and I create in such head or hub, and generally throughout its periphery, a series of radial or peripheral sockets or openings, E E, Sto., of like form and equal size.
The hub D supports branch arms F, which are so arranged as to be readily applied to and detached from the hub. Each arm F, on its rear upper edge, has on each side a laterallyprojecting' lip or flange, a. This anged part is entered in the enlarged part b of the particular slot or opening E to which itis to he applied, and is then slid along until the lips or Viianges overlap the narrow part c of the slot. When the arm is fully positioned in the slot, its lower end, d, bears against the side of the hub D, around which may be formed, if preferred, a series of pocket-bearin gs, e, to better assure the arms in position.` 'lPhis means of attachment is both secure and simple, and allows the branch arms to be interchangeably used, or to be shifted to different sockets or slots at pleasure.
In lieu otpivoting the hub D to a horizontal swinging bracket or arm, vas above ex plained, it lnay be pivoted to the upper part of a pedestal or standard adapted to stand on the floor or the said hub may be suspended from a ceiling or bracket by chains, while in lieu of ilower-pots placed upon the tray a', with which the outer end of each arm is provided, a lamp or other object may be placed on such tray.
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The central hub or head provided with radial slots or openings, as described, in combination `with one or more branch arms, each formed at therear with laterally-projecting lips or anges, to overlap the edges of the slot into which the arm is entered, and with a lower rear end, which takes a bearing against the hub, as shown and set forth.
`.FRANK O. VOR'IHLEY.
