A further object of the invention is to provide a duplicator having a drawer serving as a compartment for gelatin pads not in use and for other equipment.
A still further object of the invention is to provide a device of this character wherein the spring impressing plate will have means thereon for effectively locking a gelatin pad in operative position underlying its lower surface.
And the invention seeks as a still further object, to provide a duplicator which will be characterized by the greatest simplicity and utility and which may be manufactured at an attractive figure. Other and incidental objects of the invention, 50 not hereinbefore called to attention, will render themselves apparent as the description of the invention proceeds.

Referring now more particularly to the drawings, the numeral 1 indicates in general the preferably rectangular shaped metal body of my improved duplicator. As will be seen, particularly in Figures 1 and 2 of the drawings, the body includes end walls 2 and 3, a bottom wall 4, and side walls 5 and 6. The wall 5 is cut away throughout the major portion of its length and height to define the open end of a compartment 1 adapted slidably to receive a drawer 8. The drawer 8 is provided with a front wall 9 which, in closed position, is adapted to cooperate with the wall 5 for defining a closed side for the body. The body I is also provided with an intermediate wall [0 extending throughout the length of the body and serves both as a top wall closing the drawer at its upper side when said drawer is in closed position and also as an impressing base, in a manner to be presently described. As will be seen, the intermediate wall is disposed below the upper edges of the end walls 2 and 3 and the side walls 5 and 6 at a distance substantially one-fourth the depth of said walls so as to define a pad receiving recess ll.
Removably received in the pad receiving recess II is a preferably soft rubber pad I2 which extends throughout the major portion of the length of the area of the recess. Extending across one end of the pad in the recess is a laterally disposed block l3 which is secured to the intermediate wall by means of a stud l4. Overlying the block l3 and having its top surface in substantially the same horizontal plane with the top surface of the pad [2, is a preferably rubber strip Associated with the body I is a spring impressing plate, indicated in general at IS. The spring impressing plate is normally of arcuate formation throughout the major portion of its length but is formed with a relatively short straight portion ll near its free end. The plate it carries a mounting block H3 at its inner end and said mounting block is provided with trunnions 99 which extend through the walls 5 and 6 near their upper extremities and near the end wall 2 for swingingly mounting the plate on the body. The mounting block l8,is secured to the under side of the inner end portion of the plate I6 by means of studs 2. Carried at the free end of the plate is a preferably U-shaped handle 2| which has its arms flattened at their inner corresponding ends, as shown at 22, and appropriately secured to the free end portion of the plate iii) l6 by means of studs 23. The free end portion of the plate is rolled at 24 to provide reinforcement for said free end of .th e.plate.
As best seen in Figure B-of'the drawings, the spring impressing plate is provided at its under surface, and near its inner end portion, with a pad mounting strip 25 which is formed with a series of laterally spaced upwardly offset hooks 2&3 which extend inwardly in the direction of the block Hi. The strip 25, as will be seen, is fixed on the plate l6, and said strip is held on said plate by means of rivets 21. Slidably mounted on the opposite end portion of the spring impressing plate It is a movable pad mounting strip 28. The strip 28 is adapted for longitudinal sliding movement on the under surface of the plate l6 and is provided with upwardly and outwardly extending hooks 29. As best seen in Figures 6 and '7 of the drawings, the strip 28 is extended laterally past the side edges of the plate l6 and said laterally extended portions are bent into U-shape, as shown at 28, and said U-shaped portions have their free ends terminating in overlying relation to the upper margin of the plate H3. The strip 23 will, as will be understood, be permitted to slide longitudinally of the plate l6 but will be limited against separation vertically or lateraly by the portions 28. In order to shift the strip 28 for a short distance longitudinally of the spring impressing plate 16, I provide toggle latches 3E1 and 3| which comprise handle sections 32 and 33, which handle sections are provided with finger lugs 34 and 35. The toggle latches also include operating sections 36 and 37 which are pivotally connected to the sections 32 and 33 and to the U-shaped portions 28'. The handle sections 32 and 33 have their inner ends connected to the plate Hi. It will be understood that by pulling the toggle latches outwardly away from the side edges of the plate It, the strip 28 will be caused to move rearwardly longitudinally of said plate l6 for bringing said strip 28 closer to the strip 25. By pressing the toggle latches inwardly to a point where the finger lugs engage the side edges of the plate It, the strip 28 will be moved outwardly or away from the strip 25, for a slight distance along the plate It to locked position. Normally carried adjacent the under surface of the plate l6 and extending throughout its length is a gelatin pad 38 which, as will be seen, comprises a main portion 39 and reinforced end portions 40 and ll. The pad 38 is provided, adjacent the reinforced end portions 4t and 4i, with series of laterally spaced openings 42 and 43 adapted for removable engagement by the hooks 26 and 29 respectively, said hooks being adapted to engage through the openings and overlap the reinforced end portions 4t and 45 respectively. The gelatin pad is mounted in position on the plate Hi by first engaging the hooks 25 through the openings 42 and then engaging the hooks 29 through the openings 43, it being assumed that the toggle latches 3D and 3! have been swung outwardly for retracting the strip 25 along the plate it, as shown in Figure 6. After the hooks 29 are in the openings 43, the latches are forced inwardly, as shown in Figure l, for tightening the gelatin pad against the under sur face of the spring impressing plate it, as shown in Figure 2, so that the gelatin pad is then ready for use.
My improved duplicator includes a paper clamp which is best illustrated in Figures 1, 2, 4 and 5 of the drawings. The paper clamp is indicated generally at 45 and includes a movable clamp 85$? AVMLJ KBLE @QW element 45 which is substantially U-shape. A mounting element serves effectually to mount the element 45 and said mounting element includes an attaching portion 46 which is secured to the under surface of the intermediate wall Ill. The mounting element is formed at its free ends with hinge portions 4'! which are hingedly connected to mating portions 53 in the element 45 by means of hinge bolts 52. A clamping plate 5| is secured to the inner ends of the element 45 and said clamping plate is adapted to clamp a sheet of paper in such a way that the sheet of paper will be separated from the gelatin pad when the same has been permitted to swing away from the pad 12. A spring 48, which surrounds one of the hinge bolts 52, serves to retain the clamping plate clamping position.
In order to retain the plate IS in downward position, when not in use, and thus cause said plate to define a top wall for the device, I provide a latch 54 which is swingingly mounted on the end wall 3 and is adapted to engage over the free end portion of the plate I6.
In use, the drawer 8 will be employed for keeping gelatin pads not in use, as well as other equipment. The drawer will be provided with a suitable lock.
After the gelatin pad 38 has been mounted on the under surface of the plate IS in the manner set forth, a sheet of typewritten matter which 5 gaged with the paper with sufficient force so that said gelatin pad will have transferred thereto an impression of the typewritten matter on the sheet. The handle 2| is then released and the spring impression plate l6 will spring upwardly under its own tension. The paper clamp 44 will effectually retain the sheet of paper in overlying relation to the pad l2 so that said sheet will be effectively separated from the gelatin pad 38. The sheet of paper bearing the typewritten matter is then removed and a blank sheet of paper on which a copy of the printed matter is to be made, is placed in overlying relation to the pad I 2. The spring impressing plate I6 is then again forced downwardly against its tension, which tension will, preferably, offer a resistance of about four pounds so that the gelatin pad 38 will be engaged with the blank sheet of paper with a force sufiicient to transfer an impression from the gelatin pad to the paper. After the impression has been made, the handle 2| is released and the plate is will spring upwardly. The paper clamp 44 will be employed for holding the sheet of paper in place so that the same will be effectively separated from the gelatin pad when the handle is released. As many copies of the subject matter on the gelatin pad as desired may be made merely by repeating the operation for each copy desired.

Feet, such as shown at 55, are positioned on each corner of the body for spacing the body from a surface on which it rests.
Attention is particularly directed to the fact that the spring impressing plate I8 will be of such formation and afford such tension that uniform engagement of the gelatin pad with the paper on which the impression is to be made will be assured.
It will be understood that my improved duplicator may be made in any size and shape desired so that I do not limit myself in these respects. It is thought that further description of my duplicator is unnecessary.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim is:
l. A duplicator including a body, a pad in the body having its upper face exposed and adapted to receive a sheet of paper, a block at one end of said pad seated in said body, a clamp normally retaining the sheet of paper on the pad and consisting of a U-shaped handle pivoted to the body with its arms projecting inwardly and carrying a clamping strip disposed over said block for gripping and holding an end of a sheet of paper, a spring impressing plate carried by the body, and a gelatin pad carried by the spring impressing plate, said spring impressing plate being adapted to be shifted for engaging the gelatin pad with the paper whereby an impression of printed mat ter on the pad will be made on the paper.
2. In a duplicator, a body having side and end walls and a bottom wall, an intermediate horizontal wall for said body disposed below the upper edges of the side and end walls and cooperating therewith to define a pad receiving recess, a pad in said recess, a block in said recess between the pad and one end wall, a paper clamp carried by said end wall and movable into and out of position to overlap the block and hold a sheet of paper against the pad and block, a spring impressing plate, a gelatin pad adapted to have an impression thereon, means connecting the gelatin pad with the plate, and means swingingly connecting the plate with the body'at the opposite end thereof from said clamp, said plate being adapted to be shifted downwardly for engaging the gelatin pad with a sheet on said first mentioned pad whereby an impression will be communicated to said sheet.
3. In a duplicator, a body having a pad receiving recess, a pad in the recess, a lateral block in the recess, a strip carried by the block, said pad being adapted to receive a sheet of paper in overlying relation to said pad and strip, and a paper clamp carried by the body and being adapted for retaining the sheet of paper against displacement.
4. In a duplicator, a body, a pad carried there- BEST AVAILABLE COP\ by and being adapted to receive a sheet of paper, a paper clamp carried by the body and having a movable clamp element, said movable clamp ele-- ment having a clamping plate engageable with the sheet for retaining said sheet of paper on the pad, a spring impressing plate, means connecting the spring impressing plate with the body, a handle for the spring impressing plate, a gelatin pad, means removably connecting the gelatin pad with the plate, and means carried by the body for retaining the plate in downward closed position whereby said plate will define a top for the duplicator, said plate and gelatin pad being shiftable from arcuate position to a position overlying the sheet of paper for transferring an impression of printed matter from the gelatin pad to the sheet.
5. In a duplicator, a spring impressing plate adapted to be shifted to a position to overlie a sheet of paper in a body, a gelatin pad, a fixed mounting strip connecting one end of said gelatin pad to one end of the plate, a movable pad mounting strip carried by the other end of the plate and being adapted for removably connecting the end of the pad remote from said first mentioned end of the plate, said movable strip having its ends bent to form hooks overlapping side edges of the plate and slidably mounting the strip, and toggle latches pivoted to the plate and the hooks of the last mentioned mounting strip and being adapted for shifting said last mentioned mounting strip to a position for clamping the gelatin pad on the spring impressing plate, said gelatin pad being adapted to place an impression of printed matter on the sheet of paper.

In a duplicator, a spring impressing plate adapted to be carried by a body and sprung under tension to a position overlying a sheet of paper in the body, a fixed pad mounting strip having hooks, said fixed pad mounting strip being carried at one end of the plate, a movable pad mounting strip having U-shaped members at its ends slidably connecting it with the opposite side edge portion of the spring impressing plate, toggle latches carried by the spring impressing plate and the U-shaped members of the last mentioned strip and being shiftable from a position laterally of the spring plate to a retracted position over the plate for sliding said last mentioned strip slightly longitudinally of the plate, said last mentioned strip having hooks, and a gelatin pad having a series of openings engageable by the hooks of said strips and being adapted to be stretched by inward movement of the toggle latches and consequent longitudinal movement of the movable pad mounting strip for eifectively mounting said gelatin pad on the spring impressing plate, said gelatin pad being adapted to make an impression on the sheet of paper in the body of printed matter on said gelatin pad.
