My invention relates to improvements in boxes and closures therefor.
The invention is designed with the particular purpose in. view of providing a practicalinexpensive gift box having a prewrapped and tied body portion adapted to be filled, and closed, and sealed without disturbing the wrapper and ties thereof.
The above and additional objects, which will hereinafter be more specifically treated, may be accomplished by means of the devices illustrated, in the accompanying drawings and set forth in the following specification, in the claims of which I have assembled and defined combinations of parts and features of construction for which protection is desired.

Describing my invention in detail, with reference to the drawings by numerals, the box thereof comprises a preferably, although not necessarily, rectangular, open bottom body structure I of cardboard, or other suitable material, having a top wall 2 and four side walls 3 inturned at their bottom edges to form an internal lateral flange 4 extending around the lower edges of said body structure. A wrapper 5 of any desired character and ornamental design is provided over the body structure I and cemented, or otherwise secured, thereto preferably to the underside of the flange 4. The wrapper 5 is further secured in position by means of cross ties 6, for instance of tape, extending over the top wall 2 and down along the side walls 3 with ends thereof cemented, or otherwise secured, preferably to the underside of said flange 4. The ties 5 are secured together in the center of the top wall 2 by a cluster bow knot 6.
The described body structure I is designed to be filled from the bottom and packed by a tissue paper filler, as at I, and a rectangular packing flap 8 of cardboard of the proper width in one direction to fit between two opposed edges of the flange 4 and sufficiently wide in the other direction to fit snugly between opposed side walls 3 in overlapping relation to the flange 4. As will be understood the packing flap 8 is inserted in the bottom of the box, in the position indicated, by flexing the same, and then slid along the flange 4 to one side of the box against one side wall 3.
The body structure I is closed by means of a closure member 9 in the form of a false bottom comprising a locking flap III, a closure flap I I and a sealing flap I2 constructed and related as follows:
The locking flap Illcomprises a rectangular piece of cardboard, or other similarly flexible material, of a width in one direction to fit between opposed sidewalls 3 and slide therebetween. in overlying position to the .flange 4 and of a width in the other direction to be inserted between opposed edges of the flange '4. The locking flap Ii! is. designed to-be inserted into the bottom of the body structure I in the same manner as flap 8 by flexing, as shown in Figure 5, and then slid along the flange in the opposite direction to that in which flap 8 is slid and against the opposite side wall 3 of the box as shown in Figure 4, into what may be termed its locking position.
The closure flap II comprises a square of material which may be rigid, if desired, but is preferably cardboard and dimensioned to fit between the edges of the flange 4 and close the opening defined by said edges. The closure flap I I is pivotally attached, as at l3, to one corner of the locking flap I0 in offset relation to the latter such that when said locking flap III is slid into looking, or normal, position the closure flap I I will fit between the edges of the flange 4 and close the opening defined thereby. The pivotal connection I3 of the closure flap II to the locking flap Ill provides for swinging the closure flap on the locking flap into registration with the edges of the flange 4 and for swinging said flap II to one side when locating and removing the locking flap I9. In the described position of the closure flap II, the locking flap I0 is secured in locking or normal position by coaction of the edges of the locking flap with the edges of the flange 4 and against sliding movement into a position in which it may bulge through the opening and fall out of the structure I under the weight of the contents in the latter. On the other hand the locking flap I0 locks the closure flap II in closing position as will be obvious.
The sealing flap I2 comprises a rectangular sheet of tissue, or other Wrapping, paper preferably matching the wrapper 5 and cemented, or otherwise secured, to the bottom of the closure flap H. The sealing flap [2 extends beyond the edges of the closure flap Ill to provide sealing edges l4 adapted to underlie the flange 4. The sealing edges I4 are designed to be cemented, or pasted, to the underside of said flanges and for this purpose are preferably coated with an adhesive as indicated at l5.
When it is desired to open the described box the seal is broken by tearing the edges M, the closure flap lifted on its pivot l3 out of the opening and swung to one side for use as a handle in sliding the locking flap l into a position such that it may be bent out of the opening and pulled therethrough. As will be manifest the box may, if desired, be opened from the side thereof opposite the described closure flap. Also the box may be made in various shapes.
The foregoing will, it is believed, suflice to impart a clear understanding of the structure, operation, and advantages of my invention,
Manifestly the invention, as described, is susceptible of modification both as regards structural details and combination of parts and right is herein reserved to all such modifications fallwithin the scope of the protection prayed.
What I claim is:
1. In a box, an open bottom body structure including a top and side walls, respectively, said walls being inturned at their bottom edges to provide an internal lateral flange defining the opening in the bottom of the structure, and a closure assembly comprising a locking flap of semi-rigid material flexible for insertion into said opening in overlying relation to said flange and slidable on said flange to one side of the box into locking position, and a closure flap for the opening adapted to fit therein in edge to edge relation to said flange and connected to the locking flap in ofiset position thereon for swinging movement thereon to one side thereof in the locking position of said locking flap.
2. In a box, an open bottom body structure including a top and side Walls, respectively, said Walls being inturnedat their bottom edges toprovide an internal lateral flange defining the opening in the bottom of the structure, and a closure assembly comprising a locking flap of semi-rigid material flexible for insertion into said opening in overlying relation to said flange and slidable on said flange to one side of the box into locking position, and a closure flap for the opening adapted to fit therein in edge to edge relation to said flange and connected to the locking flap in offset position thereon for such relation in the locking position of said locking flap, the connection between said flaps comprising a pivot providing for edgewise swinging movement of the closure flap on the locking flap to facilitate fitting'the closure flap in said opening.
3. In a box, an open bottom body structure including a top and side walls, respectively, said walls being inturned at their bottom edges to provide an internal lateral flange defining the opening in the bottom of the structure, and a closure assembly comprising a locking flap of semi-rigid material flexible for insertion into said opening in overlying relation to said flange and slidable on said flange to one side of the box into locking position, and a closure flap for the opening adapted to fit therein in edge to edge relation to said flange and connected to the locking flap in ofiset position thereon for such relation in the locking position of said locking flap, and a sealing flap of flexible material overlying the bottom of the closure flap and the bottom of said flange and having portions coated with adhesive for attachment to said flange.
