This-invention relates to improvements inadjusting devices for straight pull jars, such as employed in fishingoperations duringthe-drilling I of anoil well.
The general object of this invention is-to provide an adjusting device for use in a straight:
pull jarwhich device includes yieldable detention meansa'nd a coacting arbor member for adjusting the position ofthe detention meansrelative tothe arbor member.
Another object of the invention is to I providemeans for adjustingthe'relative positions of the detention means and the arbor without removing thetool string or jar from thewell.

Positioned in the aperture 54 of the submember 28 I provide a sleeve member 55 the lower end of which extends into the bore l5 of the jar release device I2 Where it includes an enlarged head portion 56. The sleeve member 55 extends upward through the aperture 5l of the coupling member, through the aperture 4| of the slide member 38 and into the aperture 33 of the body 26 where it includes an enlarged splined head 51 which meshes with the splines of the splined body recess 33. (See Fig. 9.) Where the sleeve 55 is positionedin the threaded aperture 4| of the slide member 38 it includes an enlarged externally threaded portion 58. which engages the threads of the aperture 4|. Opening through the bottom thereof the sleeve head 56 has a recess 59 therein and extending upward from the recess 59 the sleeve: has a coaxial aperture 66 therein. The sleeve head 56 further includes a plurality of depending lugs 6! (see Fig. 8) which fit into a plurality of recesses 6| in the upper face of the jar slip member l1. Positioned in the aperture 60 of the sleeve member 55 I provide a flush pipe 62 the lower end of which is suitably secured to the jar arbor I6 as indicated at 63. The flush pipe 62 extends upward out of the sleeve member and out of the body 26 through the aperture 34 therein. Surrounding the fiush pipe62 in the aperture 34 I provide suitable packing material 63 which is held between nuts .64 and 65.
When my improved adjusting device I3 and its associated jar release device [2 are operatively installed in a drill string during a drilling operation and the drill bit becomes jammed thereby necessitating jarring to release it the driller pulls the drill string upward until the jar release device releases to deliver a blow. If the driller thinks the blow too light or the strain on the pipe too great he may vary the intensity of the next blow by adjusting the relative relation of the slip l1 and the arbor l6. To adjust the slip the driller resets the jar release device l2 and then raises the drill string to a height where the body teeth 32 disengage the coupling teeth 49 and the collar teeth 44 do not engage the slide teeth 39 as shown in Fig. 2.
The driller then rotates the drill string and the body member 26, through the medium of the splined connection, with the sleeve 55 rotates the sleeve. As the sleeve 55 isthus rotated the threads 58 raise or lower the sleeve depending on the direction of rotation. When the sleeve 55 is rotated the head lugs 6|. thereof rotate the slip member I! which in turn through the lugs 23 rotates the collar member 22. As the collar member 22 is thus rotated the threads thereof cause it to raise or lower depending on the direction of rotation. As the collar 22 moves it moves the slip I! either up or down thereby changing its position relative to the arbor l6. Thereafter the driller raises the drill string until the collar teeth 44 mesh with the slide teeth 39 thereby through the medium of the coupling item .48 again rotatively connecting the body 26 to The submember 28 adjacent its lower end in-"' the coupling member 21. Thereafter torque tension may be applied to the jammed bit as the drill string is pulled upward to trip the jar release device.
To prevent accidental turning of the sleeve member 55 I provide a plurality of latch members which are indicated at 66 in the coupling memberZl. (See Figs. 7 and 10.)
As shown the body 46 of the coupling member has a pair of opposed apertures 61 therein with threaded portions 68 adjacent their outer ends in each of which a threaded plug 69 is positioned. Each of the threaded plugs 69 has an aperture 10 therein in which a stem H is positioned. The stem H includes an enlarged pointed twoway latch head 12. Surrounding the stem ll between the head 12 and the plug 69 I provide a coiled spring 73 which resiliently urges the latch head towards the sleeve 55. Adjacent the latch memhere 66 the sleeve has a plurality of tapered sided slots 14 therein into which the springs 13 urge the latch heads 72. When the driller intentionally rotates the sleeve 55 as previously described he applies sufficient torque to cause the latch heads 12 to be forced out of the slots 14.
At 15 in the submember 28 I have shown another set of latch members similar to the latch members 66 which may be set so that the latch heads thereof are out of the sleeve slots 14' when the latch heads of the members 66 are in the sleeve slots 14.
From the foregoing description it will be apparent that I have provided a novel adjusting device for straight pull jars which is simple in construction and highly efficient in use.
Having thus described my invention I claim:
1. In combination of a string of drill pipe, a jar release device including a housing having an arbor and a movable arbor detention device therein and an adjusting device movable in said housing, said adjusting device including an upper portion and a lower portion, means connecting said upper portion and said drill pipe, means connecting said lower portion and said jar housing, clutch means connecting said upper and lower portions of said adjusting device for rotative movement, said adjusting device including means operable upon disengagement of said clutch means and upon rotation of said drill pipe to move said detention device axially in said jar housing, said adjusting device including a second clutch means for rotatively connecting said two portions thereof, said second clutch means being operable into engagement after said first clutch means has been disengaged and said drill pipe moved upward a predetermined distance.

jar release device including a housing having an portions, said upper portion having a recess tioned in said first recess adjacent the lower end thereof and secured to'said'upper' portion, said collar including an upwardly directed toothed clutch" portion, said collar member having an aperture therethrough, said lower portion of said adjusting device including an upwardly extending reduced stem portion, said stem being positionedin said collar aperture and insaid first recess, said stem having a downwardly directed toothed clutch portion thereon in said first recess adapted to mesh with said clutch portion of said collar, said lower portion including said stem having an aperture therethrough, a sleeve member positioned in said lower portion aperture and extending upward into said splined aperture of said upper portion, said stem including an enlarged splined head engaging the splines of said splined aperture,'the lower portion of said sleeve extending into said jar housing and including means engaging said detention device for relative rotation, said toothed clutch portions of said stem portion of stem and said collar member being out of engagement when said toothed clutch portions ofsaid upper and lower portions are in engagement, said sleeve member being rotatable with said upper portion and relative to said lower portion when both of saidsets of toothed clutch portions are out of engagement and being rotatable with said upper and lower portions when said toothed clutch portion of said collar has been raised to mesh with said toothed clutch portion of'said stem.

The combination of a string of' drill pipe, a jar release device including a housinghaving an arbor and an arbor detention device threaded therein and an adjusting device including an upperanda lower'portion connected to said drill pipe and said jar housing, respectively, clutch means connecting said portions, said upper portion having a recess therein opening through the bottom thereof and having a reduced splined recess therein opening into said first recess, said upper portion having a reduced aperture therein opening into said splined recess and through the upper end of said upper portion, a collar member positioned in said first recess adjacent the lower end thereof and secured to said upper portion, said collar including a clutch portion, said collar member having an aperture therethrough, a slide member positioned in said first recess of said upper portion, said slide member including a clutch portion coacting with said last mentioned clutch portion, said slide member having a threaded aperture therein, said lower portion of said adjusting device including an upwardly extending reduced stem portion positioned in said collar aperture, means connecting the upper end of said stem and said slide member, said lower portion including said stem having an aperture therethrough, a sleeve member positioned in said lower portion aperture and extending upward through said threaded aperture of said slide and into said upper portion, said stem including an enlarged splined head engaging the splines of said splined aperture and an enlarged threaded portion engaging the threads of said threaded aperture of said slide member, the lower portion of said sleeve extending into said jar housing and including means engaging" said detention device for relative rotation, said clutch portions of said slide member and said collar member being out of engagement when saidchitch portions of said upper and lower portions are in engagement, said sleeve member beingrotatable'with said upper portion and relative tosaid lower portion when both of said sets 'of clutch portions are out of engagement andbeing rotatable with said upper and lower portions when said clutch portions of said collar'have been raised to mesh with the clutch portion of said'slide member.

5. The combination of a string of drill pipe,
, a jar release device including a housing having an arbor and a movable arbor detention device therein, said arbor detention device including a resilient portion, said housing having a cylindricalf inner surface'of uniform diameter and the resilient portion of said arbor detention device having a cylindrical exterior surface engaging the cylindrical inner surface of the housing,
whereby the detention device may be axially moved within the housing While its diameter remains constant,'andjmeans'shiftable axially of said'housing fol-adjusting the arbor detention device axially along the housing.

The combination of a. string of drill pipe, a jar release deviceincluding a housing having an arbor and a unitary one piece arbor detention device movable therein, said housing having a cylindrical inner surface of uniform diameter and the resilient portion of said arbor detention. device having a cylindrical exterior surface engaging the said cylindrical inner surface" of the housing, and
an adjusting device connecting said drill pipe and said jar housing, said adjusting device including means whereby rotation of said drill pipe will rotate said jar release device and selective means operable by said drill pipe to move said detention device axially within said housing.

The combination of a string of drill pipe, a jar release device including a housing having an arbor and a unitary one piece arbor detention device therein which is mounted tomove axially in said housing, said housing having a cylindrical inner surface of uniform diameter and the resilient portion of said arbor detention device having a cylindrical exterior surface engaging the said cylindrical inner surface of the housing, said adjusting device including two rotatably mounted portions, clutch means selectively connecting said two portions, said adjusting device including means operable upon disengagement of said clutch means and upon rotation of one of said portions of said adjusting device to rotate said detention device and move it axially relative to said jar housing.

The combination of a. string of drill pipe, a jar release device including av housing having an arbor and a unitary one piece arbor detention device therein which is shiftably mounted to move axiallyin said housing, said housing having a cylindrical inner surface of uniform diameter and the resilientportion of said arbor detention device having a cylindrical exterior surface engaging the said cylindrical inner surface of the housing, an adjusting device, said adjusting device including two portions, clutch means for selectively connecting said two portions for rotative movement, said adjusting device including means operable upon disengagement of said clutch means and upon rotation of one of said portions to shift said detention device axially relative to said jar housing.

In combination with a string of drill pipe and a jar release device including a housing having an arbor and a unitary one piece arbor detention device movable therein, said housing having a cylindrical inner surface of uniform diameter and the resilient portion of said arbor detention device having a cylindrical exterior surface engaging the said cylindrical inner surface of the housing, an adjusting device connecting said drill pipe and said jar housing, said adjusting device including means operable upon rotation of said drill pipe to rotate said jar release device and selective means operable at the will of the operator to move said detention device axially within said housing.

The combination of a string of drill pipe, a jar release device including a housing having an arbor and a unitary one piece arbor detention device movable therein, said housing having a cylindrical inner surface of uniform diameter and the resilient portion of said arbor detention device having a cylindrical exterior surface engaging the said cylindrical inner surface of the housing, and an adjusting device connecting said drill pipe and said jar housing, said adjusting device including means to rotate said jar release device and selective means operable at the will of the operator to move said detention device" axially within said housing.

The combination of a string of drill pipe, a jar release device including a housing having an arbor and a unitary one piece arbor detention device mounted to move axially in said housing, said housing having a cylindrical inner surface of uniform diameter and the resilient portion of said arbor detention device having a cylindrical exterior surface engaging the said cylindrical inner surface of the housing, and an adjusting device connecting said drill pipe and said jar housing, said adjusting device including means operable at will to selectively rotate said jar housing with said drill pipe or to rotate said detention device and move it axially relative to said jar housing. 12. In combination with a jar release device including a housing having an arbor and a unitary one piece arbor detention device movably mounted therein, said housing having a cylindrical inner surface of uniform diameter and the resilient portion of said arbor detention device having a cylindrical exterior surface engaging the said cylindrical inner surface of the housing, an adjusting device secured at one end to said jar housing and at the opposite end to a string of drill pipe, said adjusting device including a lower portion and an upper portion, clutch means connecting said portions for rotative movement, said adjusting 'device including means whereby upon disengagement of said clutch means and upon rotation of one portion of said adjusting device said deten- 1 tion device will be moved axially in said jar housing.
13. In combination with a string of drill pipe and a jar release device including a housing having an arbor and a unitary one piece arbor de-. tention device therein which is rotatable relative to said housing and when so rotated moves axially in said housing, said housing having a cylindrical inner surface of uniform diameter and the resilient portion of said arbor detention device having a cylindrical exterior surface engaging the said cylindrical inner surface of the housing, an adjusting device, said adjusting device including a lower portion and an upper portion, clutch means connecting said two portions for rotative disengagement of said clutch means and upon rotation of said upper portion of said adjusting device said detention device will be rotated and moved axially relative to said jar housing.
