The invention relates to containers and more especially to metallic collapsible hogsheads.
The primary object of the invention is the provision of a container of this character, where- 5 in the body thereof is made from sheet metal longitudinally slitted so that when the same is not set up for use a plurality of these longitudinally slitted bodies can be nested one within the other for convenience in the shipment thereof and also for enabling the storage thereof in the least possible space.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a container of this character, wherein the same in its entirety is of metal and is susceptible of ventilation when containing products or material requiring ventilation during the storage or shipment of the same.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a container of this character, wherein the assembly thereof is such as to enable the setting up of the said container with dispatch and in view. of the nature of the assembly the container isassured of strength to resist hard usage thereof.
A still further object of the invention is the provision of a container of this character, which is novel in construction, simple in its make-up, readily and easily set up or knocked down and also answers every requirement for storage and shipping purposes, being strong, durable and inexpensive to manufacture.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, which disclose the preferred embodiment of the invention and pointed out in the claims hereunto appended.
In the accompanying drawings:
Figure 1 is an elevation of a container con structed in accordance with the invention.
Figure 2 is a fragmentary enlarged vertical sectional View through the container.
Figure 3 is a fragmentary sectional view taken on the line 3-3 of Figure 1.
Figure 4 is a fragmentary sectional view taken on the line 44 of Figure 1.
Figure 5 is a fragmentary perspective View of companion clamping strips for use with the body of the container.
Figure 6 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view thereof.
Figure 7 is a fragmentary perspective view of an adjustable shutter or ventilating hoop or band for the container.
Figure 8i"s"a-perspective view of an end head fastener.
Similar reference characters indicate corresponding parts throughout the several -views in the drawings. 5
Referring to the drawings in detail, A designates generally the container, which is in the form of a hogshead, involving a longitudinally split outwardly bulged cylindrical body Hi, the slit or longitudinal split therein being indicated .lO at I! and is extended entirely through the body at one side only of the same so that said body can be expanded or contractedand in this manner a number of the bodies can be nested together for storage purposes.
outstruck from the body at opposite ends thereof and intermediate of the ends are annular ribs or corrugations l2, theserbeing in cross section of substantially V form so that interiorly of the .body there will be provided annular grooves 53 created by the said ribs or corrugations so that a plurality of bodies interfitted with each other will interlock one with the other to avoid longitudinal displacement relative to each other on the nesting of the same. The ribs or corrugations l2 materially reinforce the body H] to increase the strength and life of such container and to resist hard usage.
Arranged at the split or slit H in the setting up of the body it as a container or hogshead are inner and outer clamping strips or members l4, these having the bights or outstruck areas I5 located at and corresponding to the annular ribs l2 outstruck from the body ID for the interfitting of the same, the strips or members l4 being uniformly spaced from each other through spacer washers I6 accommodating rivets or fasteners H, which are also passed through the strips or members M and in this manner the latter are joined and constitute a single unit. Between the strips or members I4 when arranged at the slit or split I I in the body H] are the edges 18 adjacent to each other of the said body it) and thus in this manner the split orslit II is closed throughout its extent when the said edges I8 are 45 fitted between the strips or members It.
Adapted to fit each open end of the body I0 is an end head I 9 having the peripheral out-turned annular flange 20 and engaged both with the body and the said flange 20 are T-shaped fasten- 50 ers 2!, the same carrying washers and nuts 22 and 23, respectively, the cross heads 24 of these fasteners 2| being disposed outside of the body l0 while the washers and nuts 22 and 23 are inwardly with respect to the body. In this manner 55 each end head I9 is made secure to the body ill for closing such end thereof when the container is set up for use.
The ribs or corrugations l2 outstruck from the body it are disposed with relation to each other at intervals throughout the length of the body I D to accommodate therebetween a split hoop or band arranged concentrically exteriorly of the body Ill and constitutes a regulating shutter having perforations 26 therein to be brought into and out of registration with companion perforations l provided in the body [0 and in this manner the interior of the body Ill can be ventilated. Each hoop or band 25, which is of circular formation, has at adjacent ends thereof outwardly directed socketed terminals 28 for the countersinking of nut-carrying bolts 29 which are engaged with these terminals and in this manner the hoops or bands 25 are adjustably fastened in place concentrically about the and receiving the edges adjacent to each other of the same between said strips, an end head closing each end of the body and. detachably secured in place, said body having spaced circular arranged rows of perforations, perforated hoops fitted concentrically about the body and rotatably adjustable thereon for coaction with the perforations in the body and controlling ventilation interiorly thereof, and means for adjustably securing the hoops between adjacent outstruck ribs on said body.
3. A container of the character described comprising a longitudinally split cylinder-like body having outstruck annular ribs formed therewith, inner and outer strips rigidly held spaced from each other and arranged in the split in said body and receiving the edges adjacent to each other of the same between said strips, an end head closing each end of the body and detachably secured 'in place, said body having spaced circubody id of the container. 0n loosening the bgjlt lar arranged row o perforations, perforated 29, the hoops or bands 25 can be rotatably adjusted for regulating ventilatienifieriorly of the container throug lmthefrforations 26 and 21, respectivelyr The spaces occupied by the hoops 1 or bands 25 between the ribs or corrugations I2 constitute guide ways for the said hoops or bands 25 and eliminate longitudinal displacement of the latter when made secure or on adjustment of the same.
What is claimed is:
1. A container of the character described comprising a longitudinally split cylinder-like body having outstruck annular ribs formed therewith, inner and outer strips rigidly held spaced from each other and arranged in the split in said body and receiving the edges adjacent to each other of the same between said strips, an end head closing each end of the body and detachably secured in place, said body having spaced circular arranged rows of perforations, and perforated hoops fitted concentrically about the body and rotatably adjustable thereon for coaction with the perforations in the body and controlling ventilation interiorly thereof. 7
2. A container of the character described comprising a longitudinally split cylinder-like body having outstruck annular ribs formed therewith, inner and outer strips rigidly held spaced from each other and arranged in the split in said body hoops fitted concentrically about the body and rotatably adjustable thereon for coaction with the perforations in the body and controlling ventilation interiorly thereof, means for adjustably securing the hoops between adjacent outstruck ribs on said body, and means holding the strips uniformly spaced from each other.
A container of the character described comprising a longitudinally split cylinder-like body having outstruck annular ribs formed therewith, inner and outer strips rigidly held spaced from each other and arranged in the split in said body and receiving the edges adjacent to each other of the same between said strips, an-end head JAMES E.
