This invention relates to certain novel improvements in cabinet structures, and has for its principal object the provision of an improved structure of this character which will be highly 5 eificient in use and economical in manufacture.

One of the many objects of this present invention is to associate with a cabinet, especially designed for use as an enclosure with reference to automatic phonograph apparatuses wherein there 10 is included an upper compartment withinwhich is confined the phonograph records to be played by the reproducing mechanism, illuminatingand light dispersing means to enhance the aesthetic appeal to the eye of the observer and to brilliantly 15 light the interior of the open portion of the cabinet much to the attraction of the observer.

Other objects will appear hereinafter.

The invention consists in the novel combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter 20 described and claimed.

The invention will be best understood by reference to the accompanying drawing showing the preferred form of construction, and in which:

Fig. 1 is a vertical sectional detail view of the 25 invention;

Fig. 2 is an enlarged sectional detail view of the same taken substantially on line 2-2 of Fig. 1; and

Figs. 3 and 4 are enlarged sectional detail views 39 of the same taken substantially on lines 3-3 and 4- 5, respectively, of Fig. 2.

Referring to the drawing, a cabinet is indicated at [0, and this cabinet is of the conventional type used to house or enclose automatic phono- 35 graph mechanism. The cabinet I is divided into an upper and lower section II and I2, respectively, by a partition IS. The upper section H of the cabinet I0 is divided into two compartments l4 and I5, respectively. The compart- 49 ment I4 is provided with a sight opening l'6 within which is arranged a transparent closure [1. In the compartment M is exposed the phonograph records IE to be successively played in awell known manner.

The partition l9 driving the upper section II into the two compartments I4 and I adjacent the rear Wall 20 is provided with an elongated opening 2|, and arranged in alignment with this opening 2| is a plurality of illuminating means 22 50 in the form of colored electric light bulbs 23, each preferably of a different shade or hue.

Arranged parallel with the upper end portion of the back wall 20, and of a width and height equivalent to the width and height of the com- 55 partment I4, is a panel 24 fluted vertically, as

at 25, to provide valleys 26 and ridges 21 separating the valleys, as shown. These ridges 2i and the valleys 26 are defined from a common center, and are preferably shaded or colored to contrast with the shade or hue of the light 5 bulbs 23.

When the phonograph is in operation, the light bulbs 23 will be energized and direct their rays of light upwardly through the opening 2| into the valleys 26 and against the sides of the ridges 21, which ridges 2'! disperse the light raysfrom the light bulbs 23, casting shadows on the sides thereof, thus producing different shades of light in the valleys 26.

It is manifest from the description herein, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, that the panel being brilliantly illuminated and the light rays cast thereon dispersed so that dif ferent shades of light appear upon the panel, is highly appealing tothe eye of the observer.

While I have illustrated and described the preferred form of construction for carrying my invention into effect, this is capable of variation and modification without departing from the spirit of the invention. I, therefore, donot wish to be limited to the precise details of construction set forth, but desire to avail myself of such variations and modifications as come within the scope of the appended claims.

Having thus described my invention, what I 30 claim as new and desire to protect by Letters Patent is:

1. In a device of the class described, a cabinet having an upper section, a partition in said section dividing the said section into upper and lower compartments, with the partition having an opening formed in one edge thereof adjacent one wall of the cabinet, illuminating means arranged in the lower section in alignment with the opening for directing light rays through said opening, and a vertically extended panel arranged in the upper compartment adjacent the back wall thereof in a plane substantially normal to said opening and parallel witth light rays from said illuminating means, said panel having means in the form of radially extended flutes for reflecting and dispersing light rays striking said panel from said illuminating means.

2. In a device of the class described, a cabinet comprising an upper compartment having a sight opening, a transparent closure for said opening, means for directing light rays into said'compartment, and a radially fluted panel disposed within the compartment adjacent the back wall thereof in substantial alignment with the sight opening and in a position to receive and disperse the light rays from said illuminating means.

In a device of the class described, a cabinet having an upper compartment with a translucent side wall portion, a radially fluted panel disposed in a plane parallel with said side Wall at a point remote therefrom, partition means adjacent the lower extremity of said panel and separating said compartment from the lower portion of the 10 cabinet, said partition having an elongated opening underlying the bottom edge portion of said panel and illuminating means in said cabinet below said partition and adapted to direct light rays through said elongated opening in the partition, and said panel being adapted to direct light from said illuminating means along radial paths and also to reflect light passing through said opening.
