Description
Aug. 20, 192.9. o. w. ULRICH WALL CONSTRUCTION Filed sept. 28, 1927 Will/lll Patented Aug. 20, 1929.
UNITED STATES omo W. ULRICH, oF cnIcAGo, ILLINOIS.
WALL 'CONSTRUCTION'.
Application led September 28, 1927. Serial No. 222,410.
The invention relates to Wall construct-ions.
It is now common practice to decorate the side walls of the room of a dwelling with panels for decorative purposes.
One object of the invention is to improve the panelling by providing a construction which makes it poible to illuminate the panels indirectly.
Another object is to provide a construction for this purpose which may be'ieadily installed within the side Walls of the ioom.
Other objects of the invention will appear from the description.
The invention consists in the several novel features hereinafter set forth and' more particularly defined by claims at the conclusion hereof.
In the drawing: Fig. 1 is a front view of 20 a side wall provided with a panel construction embodying the invention. Fi 2 is a section taken on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1, on a somewhat larger scale. Fig. 3 is a section taken on the line 3 3 of Fig. 1.
The invention. is exemplified in a wall composed of studs 4, lathing 5 secured to the front and back of the studs, and plaster 6y over the latliing. This forms a hollow wall with vertically extending spaces 7 within the wall and between the studs. The front of the side wall is formed with openings 8 which extend between the studs where desired and vertically, to provide panel openings of the desired height. In each opening is located an intramural box 9. This box is placed in a,- space 7 and comprises a back wall 10 which is formed of sheet metal having a. reflecting surface, such as tin.' The front of the box is open, as at 11, corresponding to the opening 8 in the front wall. The box is extended, as at 12, above the opening 8, and as at 13, below said opening, to form pockets for electric lights 14. By locating the lamps in these pockets, the box is illuminated, but the light rays do not pass directly through the opening 8. The reflecting surface being formed of polished tin, the inner faces of the walls of the box serve to reflect and diffuse the light to all portions of the box. The side Walls 9'* of the box are provided with flanges 9b which lap 418 formed of moulding which is secured to the front of the wall by screws 19. The
Apanels 16 may be decoiated in any suitable manner desired. When the lamps 14 are burning, the entire inside of the box will be illuminated to illuminate the translucent panel 16. Any number of illuminated panels may be provided with spaces therebetween, usually corresponding in width to the distance between the studs.
The invention provides a construction b which decorated panels may be illuminate which can be readily installed at a comparatively low cost. By removal of the moulding 18, the translucent panels may be changed, if desired, to give different color effects to the room.
The invention is not to be understood as restricted to the details set forth, since these may be modified within the scope of the a pended claims, without departing from t e spirit and scope of the invention. I
Having thus described the invention, wha I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. The combination of a side wall having an opening therein, a box disposed within the wall, having an opening in its front subi stantially corresponding to and in registry with the wall-opening, and a pocket-formingl portion extending outwardly relatively to the opening in the-box-front and ositioned behind and covered by a part o the wall adjacent the wall-opening, a decorative translucent panel for the wall-opening, Va frame around the margin of the panel, and means in thel pocket formed by said extended portion, operative to illuminate indirectly the panel.
2. The combination of a side wall having an opening therein, a. box disposed within the wall, having an opening in its front substantially corresponding to and in registry with the wall-opening, and a pair of pocketforming portions extendin above and below the opening in the box'- ront res tively and positione behind and cover b the part of the wall directly above and low the wall-opening, a decorative translucent panel for the wall-opening, a frame around the margin of the panel, and means in the pockets formed by said extended portions, operative to illummate indirectly the panel. 10
Signed at Chicago, Illinois, this 16th day of September, 1927.
OTTO W. ULRICH.
