1 Claim.

The object of this invention is to provide a heel with a particular form of breast that will permit a leather or Celluloid, etc. covering to be placed thereon, so that the overlapping parts of the cover which usually occur in the middle of the breast will make a comparatively smooth finish.

Another object Iof the invention is to provide the breast of the heel with a small shoulder running up and down thereon, leaving a recess on one side thereof in which the edge of one side of the leather cover can be nested, so that the leather cover of that side will be ush with the surface of the heel on the other side, and for the further purpose that when the leather cover is placed on the other side of the heel it will overlap the leather on the lirst named side with a single thickness and with a smooth finish showing only an edge and concealing the double thickness of the overlap.

These and other objects of the invention will be illustrated in the drawing, described in the specification, and pointed out in the claim at the end thereof.

In the drawing:

Figure 1 is a' perspective view of the heel, showing a shoulder in the breast thereof.

Figure 2 is a horizontal section on the line Zat- 2m of Figure 1.

Figure 3 shows the heel in section as shown in Figure 2, with the cover laid thereon.

Figure 4 showing a modified form of the breast of the heel, in which a tongue is provided with a shoulder on each side thereof.

Figure 5 shows the heel in section the same as shown in Figure 4, with the cover` laid thereon, the edges of which abut against the tongue and are nested into the shoulders.

In the drawing like reference numerals indicate like parts.

In the drawing reference num-eral I indicates the heel having the breast 2 thereon. The left hand side of this breast is cut away as indicated at 3 to form a shoulder 4, the height of which 45 shoulder is substantially the same as the thickness of the covering on the heel.

In Figure 2 I have shown a horizontal section of the heel. In Figures 1 and 2 the breast of the heel is shown uncovered. In Figure 3 the heel is covered with leather or Celluloid as indicated at 5. The breast of the heel, where it is cut away, is covered with a covering indicated by 6. The edge of this covering is nested into the recess and lies flush with the shoulder 4. The other sid-e of the breast of the heel is covered with a covering l, the free edge of which overlaps the edge of the covering 6 and lays thereon with what appears to be only a single thickness, thus improving the finished appearance of the heel.

In Figure 4 I have shown the heel I having the breast 8, in the middle of which is provided a tongue 9 having a shoulder on either side thereof. The cover 5 is applied to this heel and the edge of the covering I0 nests into the recess against the shoulder 9 on one side thereof and the cover l nests into the recess on the other side of the shoulder, the twocoverings I0 and il lying flush with the outer edge of the tongue 9 and leaving a smooth finish completely across the heel.

This tongue shown in Figures 4 and 5 has the additional advantage, as follows: The tongue can be colored with a tint or color that is dilferent lfrom the color of the leather or Celluloid that covers the breast of the heel, and the contrast between the exposed edge of the tongue and the cover on either side thereof gives to the heel a mark of distinction or identification.

It will be understood that the shoulder 4 can be located at the center of the breast or on either side thereof, and that the shoulder shown in Figure 2 is merely one half of the shoulder shown in Figures 4 and 5.

I claim:

A heel having a breast with a broad surface thereon, a shoulder formed up and down in said breast, the height of said shoulder being substantially the same as the thickness of one layer of material used to cover the breast of the heel, said shoulder forming on one side thereof a recess that is adapted to receive a layer of material therein, which layer will be substantially ush with the top of the shoulder the surface of the breast of the heel on either side of said shoulder extending unbroken to the side of the heel.
