Chicago, Ill., assigner to Application December 17, 1936, Serial No. 116,405
2 Claims.
This invention relates to a method of measuring and cutting tie strings and means therefor.
One of the objects of the invention is to provide an improved tying device.
Another object of the invention is to provide an improved means for measuring and cutting tie strings.
Another object of the invention is to provide a novel method of measuring and cutting tie strings.
Other objects of the invention will be apparent from the description and claims which follow.
In the drawings like characters of reference are used to designate similar elements in the several figures.
Figure l is a plan view of a device constructed in accordance with the present invention.
Figure 2 is a front View of the device shown in Figure 1.
Figure 3 is an end view of the device shown in Figure 1.
Figure 4 is aside View of one of the cutter blade holding elements utilized with the device of the present invention.
Figure 5 is a side view of another of the cutter blade holding elements'.
Figure 6 is a side View of the string holding spring associated with the cutter.
Figure 7 is an end View of the spring element shown in Figure 6.
Figure 8 is a perspective view illustrating the manner of using the device shown in Figure l.
The tying device, illustrated in the drawings, comprises a base I, of metal or other suitable material cut and bent to provide front wall 2, rear wall 3, end walls 4 and 5 and flanged end members 8 and 'I, the flanged end members 6 and 'I being provided with suitable openings 8 for rigidly securing the device to a table or other supporting means as by screws or the like.
String holder and guide bracket 9 is rigidly secured, as by bolts I0, to rear wall 3 and is provided with a series of openings II through which is threaded string I2 extending from a ball, not shown, in the manner illustrated in Figure 8,
offering resistance to paying off string from thel ball.
Tying and measuring post I3, slotted at one end, as at I4, is rigidly secured, as by nuts I5, in one of several openings I6 in flange member 1. Tying post I3 may be secured in any one of the openings I6 for suitably measuring a looped length of string I'I relative to fixed cutter I8, in the manner shown in Figure 8.
Cutter I8 comprises members I9 and 20 secured one against the other, as by screws 2 I, passing through openings 22 and thus serve to rigidly secure blade 23 on pins 24 formed integral with member I9.
It will be noted that each of the members I9 and 20 are suitably slotted, as at 25, and that cutting edge 26 of blade 23 is xedly mounted so as to diagonally intersect the slots 25 thus forming cutting throat 21.
In practicing the method of the present invention, the free end of the main strand of string 35 is drawn past cutter I8 to and around guide post I3 and back to cutter I 8 in the form of a measured loop of string I1, whence the measured loop of string I1 is severed from the main strand of string.
It will be seen that the severed loop of string I'I will be retained on post I3 with the two ends thereof brought together, for tying, for example, casing 34.
In the method of tying casing 34, which does not form part of the present invention, the casing 34 is left hanging from post I3 by loop portion 36 of the loop of string I'I. The cutter 31, rigidly secured to wall 2 as by screws 38, may be used' for severing the surplus ends of the string after tying of the casing 34.
Collecting strand 39 is secured in slot I4 in the manner shown in Figure 8 for tying together a hank of casings 34 through loop portions 36.
I claim:
l. A string measuring, cutting and tying device comprising a base, a string holder and guide member secured to the base, a tying and measuring post secured to the base in iixed spaced relationship with the string holder and guide member, and a cutter secured to the base intermediate the string holder and guide member and the tying and measuring post, the string holder and Iguide member, the measuring and tying post and the cutter being secured one relative to the other in a substantially straight line whereby a main strand of string may be drawn from the string holder and guide member to and around the string tying and measuring post and back to the cutter to form a measured loop of string, and whereby the measured loop of string may be severed from the main strand of string with the two ends of the measured loop of string brought together for tying.
2. The method of measuring and cutting tiev strings which comprises drawing the free end of a main strand of string from a supply past a cutting point to and raround a support spaced from the cutting point half of the distance of the debrought together for tying and the measured loop of string is retained by the support.
