MECHANISM non LOCATING TYrn rrarns on av n BAR-S;
Application filed April 28,1924. Serial No. 709,434.
My invention relates to mechanism for loeating a type plate on a type bar.
The object of my invention-is to provide a means of accurately and quickly locating in the proper vertical position a type plate on a type bar so that all type plates on all type bars will be automatically located in exactly the same vertical position in order that the typewriter will present perfect alignment after the type plates have been attached to the type bars in their proper position.
It will be understood that these type plates 7 are relatively small articlesyare difficult of bar, its supporting segment, the type platebeing positioned and the fixture for so positioning the. type plate on the bar Figure 21s anenlarged elevation with a portion of the fixture in section.
Figure 3 is a top plan view of the type plate showing in. dotted lines the general position of the positioning groove.
Figure 4 is a side elevation of the type plate.
Figure is a front elevation of the type plate.
Referring to the drawings in detail:
1 is a typewriter machine segmentwhich carries a plurality of type bars 2. The seg ment is supported on a typical end plate on the machine designated 3. The lower end of the type bar 2 is pivoted as at 4 in the segment 1. The upper end of the type bar is provided with the type bar head 5 which is a flat plate adapted to be inserted between the aws 6 of a type plate 7 upon which are embossed the type 8. Between these type is a transverse positioning groove 9 which is formed in the face 7 of the type plate at the time the letters are embossed in order that there shall be exact positioning of this slot with respect to the position of the letters.
The jaws of the type plate are mounted on the end of the type bar head 5. In order to secure the vertical position of'the type plate so mounted on the jaws I have pro vided a support 22 having a cylindricalcutaway portion 12 containing a spring 13 which engages with the enlarged rear end 1 1 of a pin having a sharpened head 11 adapted to enter the groove 9 in the type plate 7. It will be understood that the support 22 isnot a part of the typewriter but merely a stationary support or fixture used in assembling in a vertical position the type on the type bars of atypewriting machine. Of course it will be understood it could be used in aligning type for other purposes. As
all of these type bars with theirvtype plates arepositioned in their vertical position by the same pin in the same stationary fixture,
it isobvious that they will all have the same vertical position and that the letters will strike on the same line when these plates are permanently fixed when so positioned to the type bar head.
1 In order to quiclriy manipulate these parts and hold them in position I have also pros ,vided as'winging arm 15 which is pivoted on the fixture at 16. This arm carries a transverse rod 17 for engaging the back of the type bar 2 so that its head and the type plate will be forced against the spring pressed pin 10 to maintain firm engagement between the parts. 7 A spring 18 is attached to this lever 15 at 19 andis'attached at 20 to the fixture.
It will be noted that a line drawn between I1 the points 19 and 20 is below the point of pivotal attachment 16 of the lever 15.
hen the workman has completed the op eration he lifts the lever 15 until the line between the points 19 and 20 passes over 16, whereupon the lever 15 is pulled upwardly and .baclrwardly until it rests against the stop 21 carried by the fixture 22. In this position it is out of the road and a new type bar may be brought into position with its 5 new type plate. It will be noted that the fixture head 22 serves as an abutment against which the type 8 rests.
'It will be understood that I do not desire to confine myself to the details of this invention but comprehend within my claims such modifications as maybe necessary for its 'ada otation to var in conditions of use.
For instance, I do not-wish to confine myself to a groove or the methodof its formation as a simple hole may be sufiicient for the purpose.
Having thus fully described my invention. what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
. to yieldingly engage with said type plate.
3. In combination, a type bar, a pivoted type plate on said type bar, there being a aositioning aperture in said type plate and means adapted to engage with said aperture to determine the vertical position of the type plate on the type bar, and means to en gage with said type bar to maintain it and its type face in a predetermined position in engagement with the type faced positioning means. 7
4-. In combination, a type bar, apivoted type plateon said type bar, there being a positioning aperture in said type plate and means adapted to engage with said aperture to determine the vertical position of the type plate on the type bar, and means to engage with said type bar to maintain it and its type face in a predetermined position in engagement with the type faced positioning means, and yielding means to maintain said type bar holding means in operative or inoperative position.
5. In combination, a stationary fixture bracket, a cylindrical apertured head carried thereby, a pin working in said head having type plate on said type bar and having a piston projecting into the aperture in the head and having an exterior point, yielding means for engaging with said piston to force the pin outwardly, a pivoted type bar, a type plate on said type bar and having jaws adapted to engage the sides of said bar and a groove in said plate to receive the point of the pin, and type adapted to engage against the face of said fixture.
6. In combination, a stationary fixture bracket, a cylindrical apertured head carried thereby, a pin working in said head having a piston projecting into the aperture in the head and having an exterior point, yielding means for engaging with said piston to force the pin outwardly, a pivoted type bar, a
7 aws adapted to engage the sides of said bar and a groove in said plate to receive the point of the pin, and type adapted to engage against the face of said fixture, a lever carrying a transverse member pivoted on said bracket adapted to engage with the rear of the type bar tohold it and its type face against the pin and the fixture bracket and yielding meansto maintain said lever in its operative or inoperative position.
'7. In combination, atype bar, a'pivoted type plate on said type bar having a transverse groove located between the type faces thereon and a pin adapted to have a sharpened headengaged with and fit in said groove to determine the vertical position of said plate on the type bar.
In testimony whereof, I affix my signature.-
