Description

Patented Dec. 6, 1938 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 2 Claims.
My invention relates to sanding blocks generally, and more particularly to improvements in holders for sand paper.
The invention has for its particular object the provision of an inexpensive, sectional blockforming holder for different grades of sandpaper, or the like, and embodying sections which may be readily assembled to clamp the sheets thereto in taut, flat condition for manipulation in sanding.
Other and subordinate objects are also comprehended by my invention, all of which, together with the precise nature of my improvements, will be readily understood when the succeeding description and claims are read with reference to the drawing accompanying and forming part of this specification.
In said drawing:
Figure 1 is a view in plan of my improved holder.
Figure 2 is a view in side elevation, and
Figure 3 is a view in end elevation.
Referring to the drawing by numerals, the device of my invention, in the illustrated embodiment thereof, comprises three, preferably wooden, sections, to-wit, an intermediate inner section I and a pair of opposed outer cap sections 2. The inner section I is rectangular and embodies a pair of outstanding ledges 3 extending laterally from the sides thereof, respectively, along the center of the latter. The cap sections 2 are each also rectangular and include a flat back 4 thinner than the section I, and a pair of right angled side flanges 5. The cap sections 2 are designed to fit over opposite sides of the inner section I and with a slight clearance therebetween, the clearance in the case of one section being slightly greater than in the case of the other for a purpose presently seen.
In the use of the described device, a sheet 6 of sand-paper, cut to the required dimensions, is fitted around the outside of one capsection 2 so that the side edges thereof fold over the flanges 5 thereof and extend inwardly slightly beyond the same. The cap section 2 and sheet B are then forced over the appropriate side of the inner section I. When said cap sections 2 and sheet 6 are forced home the edges of the sheet 6 are frictionally gripped between the flanges 5 and the ledges 3, and also between the inner sides of the flanges and the adjacent sides of the inner section I, and
so that said sheet 6 is drawn taut across the cap section 2 and together with said cap section frictionally locked in the described position. The same procedure is followed with the other cap section 2. As will be understood, a sheet 'I of coarser grade, `and therefore of greater thickness, is used withl the cap` section 2 having the greater clearance between the same and the inner section I. The device is now in condition for use of the stretches of the sheets 6 and 'I extending across the back 4 of the cap sections 2 flat against the work to be sanded.
The foregoing will, it is believed, suffice to impart a clear understanding of the invention without further explanation.
Manifestly, the form of the invention described is susceptible of modification without departing from the inventive concept and right is herein reserved to such modifications as fall within the scope of the subjoined claims.
What I claim is:-
1. A holder for sheets of sand-paper comprising an intermediate rectangular block-like section having a pair of ledges extending along opposite sides thereof and centrally of said sides, and a pair of outer cap sections adapted to t over opposite faces of said intermediate sections with a slight clearance between the same and the sides and ledges of said intermediate section, whereby sheets of sand-paper folded around the cap sections may be frictionally locked at the edges thereof between said cap sections and intermediate section.
2. A holder for sheets of sand-paper compris ing an intermediate rectangular block-like section having a pair of ledges extending along opposite sides thereof and `centrally of said sides, and a pair of outer cap sections adapted to fit over opposite faces of said intermediate sections with a slight clearance between the same and the sides and ledges of said intermediate section, whereby sheets of sand-paper folded around the cap sections may be frictionally locked at the edges thereof between said cap sections and intermediate section, the clearance lbetween the cap sections and the sides and ledges of said intermediate section being greater in one instance than in the other for accommodating sheets of different thickness between said cap sections and intermediate section respectively.
