This invention refers to an apparatus for. supporting paper reels, and has for its object to provide a simple construction, of great efficiency and which permits to withdraw or to tear'ofi that portion of the paper that will be desired, by simply exerting thereon a pulling action.

In accordance with this invention, the apparatus is constituted by a support or frame that is provided with two side supporting members pro- 'vided with means for receiving the ends of the hollow shaft forfthepaper'reel, thepaper of which when unwinding, passes from the inferior part of the said reel through a free space situated between the front edge of the apparatus and a clamp pivotally mounted thereon, lying along the said front edge; the elements being so disposed that will permit the unwinding of the paper reel when the paper is pulled towards the ground, since the paper passes freely through 30 the said space. On the contrary, if a pulling action is effected on the paper in a counter-direction, the clamp is lifted also and with its upper edge brakes the movement of the paper and, as the pulling action is continued, the paper band 5 is severed by the lower edge of the clamp that is provided with an apron or extension. Once the paper has been severed, the clamp is left free to return to the normal position by its own weight, thus returning the apparatus to the position 30 proper for a new operation. The end of the paper band is freely at hand presenting a free surface sufficient for being seized with the fingers, because the point of line where the clamp brakes the paper, is away from the point or line accord- 35 ing to which the severing of the paper takes place.

This apparatus may serve for holding wrapping paper reels or reels of paper for being used as a substitute for towels, withdrawing the length -10 of the band that is required, so that the use thereof has a large number of applications in commercial premises, offices, sanatoriums, health houses, physicians, dentists and, in general, anywhere it is desired to have a guarantee of hygiene,

45 because every piece of paper that is withdrawn from the apparatus is used as a towel only once.

For the purpose that the invention be clearly understood and easily carried into practice, same has been shown on its preferred form of con- 50 struction on the illustrating drawing that accompanies the present specification. In the drawing:

Figure 5 is a transverse section of the apparatus, showing how the paper of the reel can unwind 0 freely, passing between the front edge of the apparatus and the pivoted clamp of same.

Figure 6 is a view similar to the former, showing the position of the elements when pulling is exerted on the paper band according to a lifting sense or direction, thus lifting the clamp and causing its upper edge to brake the movement of the paper band.

On the said figures the same signs of reference indicate similar or equivalent parts.

The frame or supporting member is constituted, preferably, of metal plate and it has been indicated as l the part corresponding to the rear side of the apparatus, which part is secured in a vertical position to a wall or to any other proper place where the apparatus will be used. This plate projects horizontally as at 2 and is then bent as in 3 for providing the front edge. To said rear part of plate I are secured, laterally, two plates 4 that are provided with corresponding points 5 shaped as conic caps that penetrate the ends ofthe shaft of the paper reel 1. Hollow shaft 6 is made from a cardboard tube, so that the ends thereof adopt with facility to the conic points 5, thus fixing the shaft firmly in position and, at the same time, permitting same to rotate freely. On the sideplates 4 are'mounted on corresponding pivots 8 the side legs 9 of the clamp it], which clamp is provided at its front part with an apron H, provided with windows I2, 40 said windows being intended to make it possible to see, therethrough, the end l3 of the paper band of the reel.

Clamp H], in its normal position, lies in a plane substantially parallel with edge 3, providing between these two elements, a free space through which may pass freely the end l3 of the paper band. This position is determined with the use of stops [4, provided on the corresponding ends of the legs 9 of the clamp; the said stops l4 rest on the corresponding lower edges of the lateral plates 4, thus preventing same and owing to its own weight, to oscillate and fall forward as it can be seen by referring to the drawing.

For using the apparatus the process must be as follows: Once the paper reel has been inserted as illustrated on the

1, 2, 5 and 6, the end [3 of the paper band is passed through the space lying between the front edge 3 and the clamp III as it can be seen on Figure 5. By pulling towards the ground (in the direction shown by the arrow the paper of the reel will unwind the desired length. After doing this the paper is pulled in the reverse direction (that shown by the arrow :1) as it can be seen on Figure 6. Under such conditions, the tension applied to the paper band, dominates the weight of the clamp which, with its upper edge l5 presses and holds the paper band against edge 3, stopping the unwinding thereof and, at the same time and owing to the pulling action exerted on the paper band, a severing action thereof takes place against edge I6 of apron H. V

- Once the paper has been severed the tension thereby produced disappears and the clamp, thus free, falls by its own weight, returning to the position shown on Figure 5; such falling action or movement being limited by the stops l4 that strike against plates 4.

As it can be clearly seen in Figures 1, 5 and 6, and due to the fact that the severingof the paper band takes place on the edge of apron II, there remains always free that part l3 of the paper band for being easily seized with the fingers and pulled, and this end of the band is clearly seen through the openings or windows 12 provided for that purpose on the apron, to the persons that will be using the apparatus.

The device may be constructed also with the addition of a cover placed on the top thereof, for preventing dust depositing on the reel.

Moreover, it is evident that modifications may be introduced in the construction and details without departing thereby from the scope of the invention, which has been clearly set forth in the claims that follow the present specification.

Having now particularly described and ascertained the nature of my invention and how same is to be used, I declare that what I claim, is:

1. A sheet paper dispensing device comprising a sheet 'metal holder member for a roll of the paper and having trunnion supports for the roll, a U-shaped cutter member the legs of which are pivotally mounted at the bottoms of the sides of the holder member, said holder member and cutter member having substantially parallel vertical plate members between which the paper is fed and said cutter member also having a forwardly and downwardly projecting lip on which the paper may be ripped, said lip when lifted by the paper to be ripped pressing said plate members together to grip the paper therebetween.

2. The device of claim 1 in which the holder member takes the form of a casing having an upwardly projecting flange for attachment to a wall and having upwardly and forwardly projecting tangs which have sufficient resiliency to hold said roll and said U-shaped cutter member enclosing the bottom of said casing and the ends of the legs of the U being provided with a stop member to limit the downward movement of the cutter member and to hold said plates in par:- allelism when said lip member is not moved upwardly.
