This invention relates to the false twist mechanisms used in the spinning of textile fibres and especially to the case where the roving or sliver of fibres is subjected to-two or more successive drawing operations with'intermediate false twist. The machines used for this purpose comprise for each roving two successive drawing arrangements or mechanisms, betweenwhich a false twist tube is interposed, All the false twist tubes correspending to the different rovings are mounted on a bar or frame which extends over the entire length of the machine and receives a reciprocatingm'ovement in order to follow the transverse reciprocating movement of the rovings.
In these machines, the false twist tubes are generally actuated by means of gears, an arrangement which has given good results in practice being that in which each of the twist tubes is connectedflwith a helical wheel, a shaft extending throughout the entire length of the machine and carrying a series of'helical pinions which actuate the wheels of the different twist tubes being arranged at the lowerpart of the bar or frame;
It is, however, often desired to reciprocate the frame longitudinally in order to follow the transverse reciprocating movement of the rovings and it is one of the principal objects of the invention to provide an improved. means of rotating the twist tubes while permitting this movement of the frame.
The necessary part of a false twist mechanism provided with the improvements according to the present invention is illustrated by way of example in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 shows in longitudinal section the whole of the bar or frame carrying the twist tubes with the chain mechanism for actuating them.
Figure 2 is a detail on a larger scale of a part of Figure 1 in longitudinal section on the line II--II of Figure 3.
Figure 3- is a cross-section on the line III-III of Figure 2, and
Figure 4 is a longitudinal section of a modification.
As will'be seen from thedrawings, the mechanism is constituted by a frame I, which may be in the form of a casting, or constructed of sheet metal or any other suitable'material, the bear-- ings- 2- being fitted therein at suitable intervals,
while the sprocket whee1s-3' turn loosely in the saidbearings. Each of these toothed wheels 3receives, as shown in broken lines in Figure 3, afalse twist tube 4 ofany suitable type and disposed so that it may be readily introduced into the toothed wheel and withdrawnztherefrom-and so that, when fitted in the toothed wheel, it is rotated-thereby.
The toothed wheels 3 are:all driven by an endless chain 5, which is actuated by. means of a wheel 6 of larger diameter, which is disposed at 5 one end ofthe frame I and is secured. to the shaft 7' which extends to the-exteriorof: the frame and is rotated by any suitable mechanism.
At the other end of the frame I there is mounted-a-nother wheel 8 similar-to the wheel 6 for guid- 10 ing the chain 5 This wheel 8, however, is free to rotate loosely on the bearings 9, the position of which bearings may be regulated by means of a screw 10 to compensate for variations in the length of thechain. 15
The whole mechanism is covered by a cover ll suitably secured to theframe I, the form of the cover being such as to retain the toothed wheels 3 andthechain 5'-in position;
The frame I maybe given the reciprocating 20 movement which enables it to follow the transverse to and fro movement of the rovings in any known manner. It is necessary that the wheel 6 should be so actuated that its movement is not interrupted in spite'of" the reciprocating move- 25 ment of the frame. This may be achieved by various mechanisms, and in Figure'l there is illustrated by way. of example a toothed wheel l2 mountedon. the shaft lof the wheel 6, which toothed wheel engages with a worm l2a actu- 30 ated by a suitable gear l3. The worm [2a is sufficiently long to enable the toothed wheel l2' to be displaced longitudinally on the worm I20; without becoming disengaged therefrom. This displacement produces a number of small varia- 35 tionsin the speed of rotation of the wheel 12 and consequently of the wheels 3' and of the twist tubes, but as these variations are very small and, moreover, it is-a question of false twist, they are of no importance in practice. 40
In Figure 4 is illustrated amodification of the arrangement of this mechanism, the object of which is further to facilitate the reciprocating movement of the frame I with the-toothed wheels 3 and the twist tubes. In this case, the frame I 45 carries only'the'toothed' wheels 3 and the twist tubes, while theactuation of thechain 5 is effected by a wheel l6 arranged separate from the frame! and adjacent one extremity thereof, the said wheel being rotated by any suitable means. 50 At the other extremityof and also separate from the frame I a suitable mechanism for imparting the necessary tension: to the chain 5 is arranged. This mechanism is illustrated inthe drawings as being constituted by two guide wheels l4 and a 55 wheel [5, from which wheel a weight is sus pended. With this arrangement, the reciprocating movement affects only the frame I with the wheels 3, while the whole of the chain and also the wheels which actuate it and impart the tension thereto do not take part in this to and fro :lovement.
In this arrangement according to Figure 4 a series of guide rollers I! mounted in the frame I and serving as a support for the lower side of the chain 5 are provided, with the object of reducing the friction of the chain with the frame I. The arrangement of the guide rollerscould also be applied to the form of construction shown in Figure l.
The mechanism forming the subject of this in vention is of extremely simple construction,-greatly reduces the possibility of failure in operation and reduces the cost price in comparison with mechanisms in which the twist tubes are actu'-' ated by gears.
What I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is:
1. In a false twist mechanism for use in drawing textile rovings the combination of a frame, a plurality of sprockets rotatably mounted on the frame along the length thereof, a twist device through which a roving may be passed to receive a false twist mounted for rotation with each of the said sprockets, a pair of guide sprockets mounted on the said frame one at each end thereof, a sprocket chain passing round the said guide sprockets and engaging tangentially with the sprockets carrying the twist devices intermediate said guide sprockets, means for retaining the chain in engagement with the sprockets carrying the said twist devices, means for reciprocating the frame longitudinally, means for giving to one of the said guide sprockets a continuous rotation in one direction and means for moving one of the said guide sprockets longitudinally of the frame to adjust the tension of the said chain.
2. In a false twist mechanism for use in drawing textile rovings the combination of a frame, a plurality of sprockets rotatably mounted on the frame along the length thereof, a twist device through which a roving may be passed to receive a false twist mounted for rotation with each of the said sprockets, a pair of guide sprockets mounted on the said frame one at each end thereof, a sprocket chain passing round the said guide sprockets, means for retaining the chain in tangential engagement with the sprockets carrying the twist devices intermediate the said guide sprockets, a toothed wheel secured to the shaft of one of the guide sprockets, a worm wheel engaging the said toothed wheel and mounted independently of the said frame with its axis parallel to the direction of movement of the frame, means for reciprocating the frame longitudinally and means for rotating the worm wheel to cause rotation of the said twist devices.
3. In a false twist mechanism for use in drawing textile rovings the combination of a frame, a plurality of sprockets rotatably mounted on the frame along the length thereof, a twist device through which a roving may be passed to receive a false twist mounted for rotation with each of the said sprockets, a pair of guide sprockets mounted exteriorly of the frame beyond the ends thereof, a sprocket chain passing round the said guide sprockets, means for retaining the said chain in tangential engagement with the sprockets on the frame, said frame beingslidable longitudinally with respect to said guide sprockets and with respect to said sprocket chain, said sprocket chain moving through the frame in one continuous direction quite independently of the movement of the frame and means for rotating one of the guide sprockets.
4. In a false twist mechanism for use in drawing textile rovings the combination of a frame, a plurality of sprockets rotatably mounted on the frame along the length thereof, a twist device through which a roving may be passed to receive a false twist mounted for rotation with each of the said sprockets, a pair of guide sprockets mounted exteriorly of the frame beyond the ends thereof, a sprocket chain passing round the said guide sprockets, means for retaining the said chain in tangential engagement with the sprockets on the frame, said frame being adapted to be reciprocated between and independently of said guide sprockets, said chain moving through the frame independently of the movement of the frame and in one continuous direction and in mesh with all of the twist device sprockets at the same tangential side thereof whereby torotate all of said twist device sprockets in one same direction all the time, a movably mountedtensioning sprocket engaging with thechain and biased to apply tension thereto and means for rotating one of the said guide sprockets.
5. In a false twist mechanism for drawing textile rovings the combination of a frame adapted to be reciprocated longitudinally, a plurality of rotatably mounted sprockets at least some of which are mounted on the frame along the length thereof, a twist device through which a roving may be passed to receive a false twist mounted for rotation with each of at least some of. the sprockets on said frame, a sprocket chain passing round at least two of the sprockets and engaging tangentially at the same side with those sprockets on the frame which carry the twist devices, guide means adjacent each point of tangential engagement of the said chain with a sprocket and arranged positively to retain the chain in said engagement and means for actuating the chain to give to all the twist devices a continuous rotation in one direction all the time.
6. In a false twist mechanism for drawing textile rovings the combination of a frame adapted to be reciprocated longitudinally, a plurality of sprockets rotatably mounted on the frame along the length thereof, a twist device through which a roving may be passed to receive a false twist mounted for rotation with each of at least some of the said sprockets, a sprocket chain extending along the frame and engaging with said sprockets, the engagement of said chain with at least one of said sprockets being tangential and the chain passing to the same side of all the sprockets, a cover plate extending along and detachably secured to said frame, said cover plate being arranged positively to retain the chain in said tangential engagements, and means for actuating the chain to give to the sprockets a continuous rotation in one same direction all the time.
7. In a false twist mechanism for use in drawing textile rovings, the combination of a longitudinally reciprocal frame, a plurality of sprockets rotatably mounted on the frame along the length thereof, a twist device through which a roving may be passed to receive a false twist mounted for rotation with each of said sprockets, a sprocket chain extending along the frame and engaging in the same directional sense with said sprockets, the engagement of said chain with at least one of said sprockets being tangential, guide means adjacent each point of tangential engagement of the said chain with said sprocket and arranged positively to retain the chain in said engagement, and means for actuating the chain to give to all the sprockets and the twist devices a continuous rotation in one same direction all the time.
8. In a false twist mechanism for use in drawing textile rovings, the combination of a frame adapted to be reciprocated longitudinally, a plurality of sprockets rotatably mounted on the frame along the length thereof, a twist device through which a roving may be passed to receive a false twist mounted for rotation with each of the said sprockets, a pair of guide sprockets mounted on the said frame one at each end thereof, a sprocket chain passing around the said guide sprockets and engaging tangentially and in the same directional sense with all the sprockets which carry the twist devices, guide means for retaining the chain positively and in the same directional sense in engagement with the sprockets carrying the said twist devices, and means for giving to one of the said guide sprockets a continuous rotation in one direction whereby all of the twisting devices are rotated in one same direction all the time.
